The TCL QM8L may be a worthwhile upgrade if you want a large, high-end Mini LED TV, but the available testing does not establish that it is a better buy than its rivals at today’s prices. TechRadar’s review of a 75-inch set found strong color and brightness, while its measured color coverage fell short of TCL’s headline claim. The lab work was TechRadar’s, not itechguides.com’s, so this assessment attributes those results rather than presenting them as our own.
What the QM8L is—and where it sits
TCL lists the QM8L as a 2026 SQD-Mini LED 4K UHD HDR smart TV with Google TV. Its US lineup includes 65-, 75-, 85-, and 98-inch sizes. TCL also lists the preceding QM8K generation, while RTINGS describes the QM8L as a high-end replacement for that model, positioned above the QM7L and below the flagship X11L. What independent testing found
The reported results come from a 75-inch sample
In its May 9, 2026 review, TechRadar said it used a 75-inch QM8L regularly for a couple of weeks, watching streamed shows and movies, listening to music, and playing PS5 games. It also reports that objective measurements were taken in Future Publishing’s TV testing lab. The review names a Klein K-10A colorimeter, Jeti 15VA spectroradiometer, Murideo Six G 8K Metal test-pattern generator, and Portrait Displays’ Calman software. This is a useful account of one publication’s sample and test setup, not a guarantee that every size or individual unit will perform identically. Read TechRadar’s testing and review.
The color figure needs its mode and source attached
TCL markets a “TCL Deep Color System” and says it can typically achieve 100% of the BT.2020 color ratio. The company qualifies that claim: results may vary with test environment, standards, equipment, and production variation. It is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result for every set. In contrast, TechRadar reported measuring 90.34% color coverage in Filmmaker mode, below TCL’s stated figure. That number is TechRadar’s result under its test conditions; it should not be read as a universal specification or a direct prediction of what every owner will see.

The gap matters most to readers treating the advertised color figure as a guaranteed benchmark. The review’s result does not, by itself, establish how the QM8L compares with another TV under a matched test, nor does it settle whether its picture looks pleasing in ordinary viewing. For that judgment, use the review’s broader viewing observations alongside the explicitly attributed measurement rather than treating either figure as the whole story.
Is it a worthwhile upgrade for your room?
When a large Mini LED set makes sense
The QM8L is a candidate for an upgrade if your priority is moving to one of TCL’s higher-end 2026 sets and you can use its size effectively. Choose among the 65-, 75-, 85-, and 98-inch versions based on your room, seating distance, and installation space; the lineup alone does not tell you which size is appropriate. What the available evidence cannot settle
The cited material does not provide a controlled, matched-size comparison of QM8L brightness, contrast, local-dimming behavior, reflection handling, blooming, gaming input behavior, or prices against the QM7L, X11L, and QM8K. TechRadar’s account of PS5 use confirms that gaming was part of its review, but it does not establish a complete gaming comparison. Nor does the evidence establish current, stable pricing or availability for a particular size and retailer. Because value depends on those details, a categorical “upgrade” recommendation based only on the model’s position in TCL’s range would go beyond what has been demonstrated.

How to make the buying decision
- Confirm the exact model and size. Check the retailer listing against TCL’s US lineup and model-specific support materials; do not assume specifications for one size automatically describe every size.
- Compare like with like. Check the QM8L against the QM7L, X11L, or QM8K at the same size, and look for measurements made with comparable methods. A higher position in a product range is not a substitute for a controlled comparison.
- Check the price and terms on the day you buy. Compare the same size and regional model, and account for warranty and return terms. No stable current price is established here, so the value judgment must be made from a live offer.
- Use the independent measurement in context. Treat TechRadar’s 90.34% result as its Filmmaker-mode measurement, and TCL’s 100% figure as a qualified manufacturer claim—not two interchangeable guarantees.
Verdict: The QM8L is a plausible upgrade for someone seeking a high-end, large-screen TCL Mini LED TV, and the independent review provides useful evidence from a 75-inch sample. But the evidence available here does not prove it is worth upgrading at any particular price or that it outperforms the relevant alternatives. Buy when the size, live price, and independently verified performance suit your needs—not on the strength of the color-coverage headline alone.
