It can be worth upgrading to Switch 2 if you want its exclusive games or specific Switch 2 Edition features—but upgrading games is not the same as buying a new console. Nintendo announced a US suggested retail price of $449.99 for Switch 2, before tax. Add only the game editions or upgrade packs you actually want, then subtract any eligible packs included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership you already have. Your total depends on your library, local prices and how much you value each title’s additions.
What does upgrading to Switch 2 actually cost?
For a Switch owner, the calculation has two parts: the cost of the console and the cost of any games or title-specific upgrades. Nintendo announced a US suggested retail price of $449.99 for the Switch 2 system and $499.99 for a system bundle with Mario Kart World at launch. These are US suggested prices announced by Nintendo, not guaranteed current checkout prices.

The game figures are selected listings from the Nintendo US Store accessed in 2026. They illustrate how prices vary; they are not a fixed tariff. Do you have to buy your Switch games again?
Not necessarily. For selected games, owners can purchase or download a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack instead of buying the full edition again. Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as the original Switch game bundled with an upgrade pack; depending on the title, that pack can add visual improvements, features or game modes. The contents and price are title-specific.
The original game remains playable on Switch, while the added Switch 2 Edition features are playable only on Switch 2. Upgrade packs can be obtained through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store or retailers. Check the exact game’s listing to see what the pack adds and which base game it requires.
If you do not own the original, compare the full Switch 2 Edition price with the cost of the original game plus its upgrade pack, where both options are available. Do not assume every edition is merely a graphics upgrade: some include additional content or modes.

Can a membership make an upgrade pack free?
Some selected upgrade packs are available at no additional charge to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the original game. Nintendo lists Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom among the examples. The membership benefit applies to selected packs, not to every Switch 2 Edition or game.
If you already have an eligible membership, check its current terms and the specific game’s upgrade listing before paying separately. If you are considering starting or renewing a membership only for one upgrade, compare the actual membership cost and remaining term with the individual pack price; the cited prices do not establish a universal break-even point.
How to decide whether the upgrade is worth it for you
Use the costs and benefits for your own library rather than treating all Switch 2 upgrades as equivalent.

- Price the console you would actually buy. Use the current local transaction price, add tax, and account for any bundle game you genuinely want.
- Check your existing games. Confirm whether each title is supported and whether it has a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack.
- Separate upgrade packs from full games. If you own the original, compare the pack price with the specific features it adds. If you do not, compare the full edition against the original-plus-upgrade option where available.
- Account for membership benefits. Subtract only packs you can actually download under an active eligible Expansion Pack membership and ownership of the original game.
- Compare the result with what you plan to play. Weigh Switch 2 exclusives and improvements you value against the console cost—not against a hypothetical full repurchase of every game.
Upgrading is more compelling if you want Switch 2-exclusive games, value particular edition additions, or can use included or modestly priced packs. It is less compelling if you mainly play compatible Switch titles and would buy the console only for a few enhancements you do not particularly value. That is a personal value judgment, not a Nintendo recommendation.

Will your Switch library work on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports many compatible physical and digital Switch games, and linked Nintendo Accounts can access digital games. However, some Switch games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s official compatibility information for each title you rely on; do not assume every game, accessory or feature will carry over without qualification.
Are physical and digital Switch 2 games priced the same?
Not always. Beginning with preorders in May 2026, Nintendo-published digital Switch 2 exclusive titles have MSRPs different from their physical versions. Nintendo’s notice does not establish one universal price gap, and retailers may set their own prices. Compare the physical and digital listings for the exact game in your region rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.
