If your iPhone still meets your needs and its battery is the main problem, get a battery-service quote before buying a new phone. Compare that quote with the upgrade’s net cost after you have a confirmed trade-in offer. Upgrade when the phone’s other limitations, condition, or needed features justify the extra cost—not because a battery-health percentage alone dictates the decision.
Start with the problem you are trying to solve
A battery replacement and an upgrade solve different problems. Battery service is aimed at worn battery capacity and battery-related performance issues. A new iPhone may address those concerns too, but it also costs more and is only worthwhile if its additional capabilities or condition matter to you.
Before comparing prices, write down what is actually wrong. Is the phone running out of charge earlier than it used to? Does iOS display a battery-service message? Is the phone also damaged, short on storage, missing a feature you need, or no longer working well for your daily tasks? Separating battery symptoms from other shortcomings makes the choice clearer.

- Battery is the main issue: investigate service first, especially if the phone otherwise works well and you expect to keep using it.
- Several limitations matter: compare an upgrade, since a new battery would not fix unrelated problems.
- There are faults beyond the battery: factor in those repairs and the phone’s condition before deciding either route is good value.
Check battery health and real-world runtime
On the iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Depending on the model and iOS label, the screen may say Battery Health & Charging. Read the displayed battery-health information and any service recommendation. Then consider how the phone performs in ordinary use: how often you need to charge it, whether it lasts through a typical day, and whether your charging habits have changed.

A capacity figure is useful context, not a complete diagnosis or an automatic replacement order. A phone’s practical runtime depends on how it is used and charged, and a percentage by itself does not capture whether its performance is acceptable to you. Apple says it may be time for service if you need to charge the battery more and more frequently; that is a general prompt to consider service, not a guaranteed threshold for every model or owner. Understand Apple’s capacity design figures
Apple describes different design targets for different iPhone generations. Under ideal conditions, iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles. iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles. These are design statements, not promises about an individual phone’s current capacity or a universal point at which every battery must be replaced. Apple notes that actual battery performance depends on use and charging. Apple’s battery information provides the model-group figures and qualifications.

Why an aged battery can affect performance
Battery wear can mean less runtime, but capacity is not the only consideration. Apple explains that an aged battery may be less able to provide the peak power a phone needs. In some circumstances, iOS can apply performance management to help prevent an unexpected shutdown. The effect and the phone’s displayed battery information depend on the device and its battery condition; do not assume that every older iPhone is being slowed down for the same reason.
If a battery-related performance message appears, read what it says on your device rather than inferring the cause from age alone. Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance describes the relationship between battery condition, peak-power capability, and performance management. Battery service can restore battery capacity and performance where the battery is the limiting factor, but it will not repair unrelated hardware faults or add features that the phone does not have.

Get the actual repair and upgrade costs
There is no reliable universal break-even price for replacing an iPhone battery instead of upgrading. The answer changes with the exact model, the service price and availability where you live, the phone’s condition, the trade-in offer, and how long you expect to use it. Apple says out-of-warranty service is available, but prices and terms may vary. Check a current quote for your model and location rather than relying on an old price or a general estimate. Apple’s service page provides the official starting point.
- Identify your exact iPhone model and region. Model matters for service eligibility, parts compatibility, and any quote you request. Do not use a price or repair kit listing for a similar-looking model.
- Request a battery-service quote. Check Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for current options and terms in your location. Ask whether the route is in person or requires shipping the phone to a repair center; options depend on location.
- Inspect the rest of the phone. Consider the display, cameras, charging port, buttons, storage, and any other issues relevant to you. If another problem needs repair, include its likely cost or impact rather than treating the battery quote as the whole repair budget.
- Get a real trade-in estimate before calculating upgrade cost. A trade-in credit is not guaranteed until the device is assessed under the program’s terms. Use the offer for your phone’s actual condition, not an advertised maximum.
- Calculate net upgrade cost. Subtract the confirmed trade-in amount from the price you would actually pay for the new phone, including any costs that apply to your purchase. Compare that figure with the battery-service quote and any other repairs you expect to need.
Keep the figures in the same currency and on the same basis. A quoted repair price is not directly comparable to an upgrade price before trade-in, and an estimate is not the same as a confirmed offer. If either number is uncertain, wait for the actual terms before treating the comparison as settled.

Compare the two paths against your needs

Battery service is more compelling when
- The phone’s runtime is the primary complaint, and its other functions meet your needs.
- The repair quote is acceptable compared with the actual net cost of upgrading.
- You expect to keep the phone long enough to benefit from restoring its battery capacity.
- The display, cameras, charging port, buttons, and other relevant parts are in condition you are comfortable continuing to use.
An upgrade is more compelling when
- You need newer capabilities or the current phone has limitations that battery service cannot fix.
- Damage or other faults would still require attention after a battery replacement.
- The net upgrade cost, based on an actual purchase price and assessed trade-in offer, is worth it to you.
- You would rather replace the device than continue using it after service, and the added value meets your needs.
Choose a service route carefully
Apple recommends Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for genuine battery service. Depending on where you live, service may be available in person or by sending the iPhone to a repair center. Confirm the route, price, and terms for your location before handing over the phone. Apple’s service information is the appropriate place to begin checking availability.

A part advertised for a related model is not proof of compatibility. A third-party kit is not necessarily a genuine Apple battery, and the repair involves taking apart the phone. Apple says genuine batteries are designed to work with iOS battery-health reporting. Its guidance also warns that “An Unknown part might affect the trade-in value of your device.” Read Apple’s information about genuine iPhone batteries before choosing a non-genuine part. If preserving genuine-part status, battery-health reporting, or future trade-in value matters, weigh those considerations against any savings from DIY repair.

Account for the old battery and phone
If you replace the battery, ask the service provider how the removed battery is handled; do not treat it as ordinary household waste. Apple provides battery-service and recycling information at Batteries – Service and Recycling. If you upgrade, look into reusing, trading in, or recycling the old iPhone through a program available in your area. Eligibility, availability, and terms vary, so confirm them locally rather than assuming the device will qualify for a particular credit.
Apple’s environmental answers page is a starting point for its environmental and device-recovery information. Keeping a suitable phone in use longer or sending an unwanted device through an available reuse or recycling route are distinct ways to avoid leaving a usable device idle; the right choice still depends on whether the phone can meet your needs safely and reliably.
Make the decision with a short checklist
- Record the exact model and check battery information in Settings, including any service message.
- Judge runtime in your normal routine, not by capacity percentage alone.
- List non-battery problems and features you want that your current phone does not provide.
- Get a current, location-specific service quote and confirm what repair route is available.
- Get an assessed trade-in offer and calculate the true net cost of the upgrade.
- Choose battery service if the phone otherwise suits you and repair is the better value for your expected continued use; choose an upgrade if its added capabilities or the phone’s condition justify the net cost.
- Plan reuse, trade-in, or recycling for the old device, and confirm local terms.
The right answer is personal because neither a battery percentage nor a generic price comparison captures your phone’s condition, local service costs, trade-in value, or needs. A quote and a confirmed offer turn the decision from guesswork into a comparison you can make for your own device.
