Update your BIOS or UEFI when the release for your exact computer or motherboard fixes a problem you have, supports hardware you need, or addresses a relevant security or compatibility issue. If none of those applies, installing the newest version just because it is available is not necessary. Before updating, verify the model and release notes, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep power connected, and locate your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.
When should you update your BIOS?
BIOS/UEFI is low-level firmware that initializes hardware and starts the operating system. A firmware update can fix a documented defect, improve stability or compatibility, add support for a processor or other hardware, or change a particular feature. Those benefits depend on the release and the device; an update does not automatically make a computer faster or better.
Check the support page for your exact PC model or motherboard revision. Read the release notes and determine whether they address your issue, hardware, or a security notice. ASUS recommends updating when an official release aligns with actual usage requirements; Dell likewise provides update guidance for its own systems. See ASUS’s Windows BIOS update guidance and Dell’s BIOS and UEFI update guide.
Security or platform compatibility can be a reason to update even when the computer appears to work normally. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance explains that correct UEFI firmware behavior can matter for certificate servicing, and some systems may need an OEM firmware update. This is a specific compatibility case, not a reason to install every release. TPM options are also device-specific UEFI settings; consult Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions for your device.

A practical decision check
- Update: The release notes address a fault you have, hardware you plan to use, or a relevant security or compatibility requirement.
- Wait: The release has no applicable fix or requirement, and your system is working as needed. Waiting is a reasonable choice; it is not a claim that updates never help.
- Pause and verify: You cannot confirm the exact model, required intermediate versions, update method, power requirements, or recovery-key access.
Is it safe to update your BIOS?
A BIOS update is a firmware-writing operation, so an interruption or failed update can leave a computer unable to start. ASUS warns against forcing a shutdown during the process, and Dell instructs users to keep the computer connected to AC power. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal failure rate, so there is no sound basis for saying that ordinary updates commonly brick computers—or that failure is impossible.
Risk depends partly on using the correct firmware and following the procedure for the exact device. Do not use a firmware file for a similar-looking model, a generic third-party flashing utility, or a procedure intended for another manufacturer. The interface, prerequisites, and available recovery features vary by model.

What to check before updating
Use this checklist before you start. The manufacturer’s current instructions take precedence wherever they specify a different requirement.
- Identify the device precisely. Confirm the full PC model or motherboard model and revision. Download firmware only from the manufacturer’s official support page for that device.
- Read the release notes. Check what the release changes, whether it applies to your reason for updating, and whether earlier firmware versions must be installed first.
- Confirm power requirements. Use reliable power and follow any model-specific battery threshold. For a laptop, use the supplied AC adapter if the manufacturer requires it. Dell says to keep AC power connected during its update process; ASUS procedures may also specify battery requirements.
- Prepare for BitLocker or device encryption. Find the recovery key and make sure you can access it from another device or a secured copy. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions on whether encryption should be suspended for that update. If the PC is managed by work or school, consult IT before changing encryption settings.
- Save work and back up important data. ASUS advises backing up data in its EZ Flash guidance. This is prudent preparation; it does not mean a BIOS update inherently erases user files.
- Plan the update method. Use only the method documented for your device. Some supported in-firmware methods use a USB flash drive containing the firmware file; check whether yours requires removable media.
- Keep the process uninterrupted. Do not power off, reset, disconnect power, or remove update media while firmware is being written.
How to choose the right update method
Manufacturers may offer a Windows-based updater, an in-firmware utility, or another model-specific route. For example, ASUS documents Windows updates and EZ Flash for supported products, while Dell provides its own download and installation procedure. These examples do not establish one safest method for every brand or model. Follow the exact device’s instructions rather than choosing a method based on convenience alone.

- The read and write speed is faster. It only takes 3 seconds to read EN25T80 and 9 seconds to write EN25T80. It is currently the fastest BIOS chip programmer on the market.
- Automatically identify chip model (mainly for 25 series chips, 24/25/93/25/95 EEPROM needs to be manually selected).
- Automatically detect whether the chip is placed; The chip supply voltage is automatically selected.
- It fully supports 25 SPI FLASH, 24 EEPROM, 25 EEPROM, 93 EEPROM, 95EEPROM and other series of memory chips.
- EZP2023 USB SPI Programmer Full Set + 12 Adapter Support 24 25 93 95 EEPROM Flash Bios for Windows Better Than EZP2019
Some ASUS motherboards support USB BIOS FlashBack, including certain situations where the system cannot boot, but availability depends on the model. Do not assume your computer has a flashback button, recovery image, or dual firmware chip unless its manual confirms it. ASUS’s EZ Flash and firmware update guidance describes supported-product procedures and notes that features vary.
Can a BIOS update trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt?
It can. ASUS warns that a BitLocker recovery prompt may appear after an update. If device encryption is enabled, locate the recovery key before updating and confirm you can retrieve it without relying on the affected computer. Microsoft notes that a BitLocker-enabled device needs its recovery key for most Windows Recovery Environment recovery options. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Follow your PC maker’s directions about suspending and re-enabling encryption; managed devices should follow their organization’s IT process.

What should you do if an update causes a problem?
First determine whether Windows is failing to start or the computer is failing to initialize or reach firmware setup. Windows Recovery Environment can help with some operating-system startup problems, but it is not a general tool for repairing corrupted motherboard firmware.

Use Windows recovery options appropriate to the symptom. On an encrypted device, have the BitLocker recovery key available because many recovery actions require it. Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains the Windows-side tools and requirements.

If the computer does not POST or firmware recovery appears
Consult the exact manufacturer’s model-specific recovery instructions or contact its support. Recovery features and steps differ by product, and a supported recovery option is not a guarantee that every failed flash can be repaired. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance also directs users toward OEM-specific guidance for persistent boot failures.
Do not assume that clearing CMOS will rewrite corrupted firmware: restoring configuration settings and repairing firmware are different operations. Do not reinstall Windows as a general remedy for a failed firmware flash.
