Child location sharing can help with a specific trip, a late arrival or a request for help—but it does not guarantee safety. Because location data can also expose a child’s routines and whereabouts, make tracking a family agreement: decide why it is needed, who can see it and when it should be turned off. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends talking with children about location access and avoiding round-the-clock sharing.
When can child location tracking help?
Location sharing can support practical coordination: a parent may check whether a child arrived, find them after a plan changes or help them get directions. Those uses make the strongest case for sharing when the purpose is specific—for example, during a particular trip or while a child is learning a route.
Tracking is one part of a safety plan, not a substitute for communication or a guarantee that a child will be safe. Agree on what the family will do if a child needs help, cannot be reached or is running late. The FTC advises parents to start with a conversation about family rules and expectations, then consider parental controls if they are useful (FTC family-plan guidance).

A location history can reveal more than a child’s position at one moment. Patterns of movement may show routines and whereabouts. Location may also be determined from more than GPS: depending on the service, device and settings, signals can include IP address, sensors, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cell towers and Bluetooth devices. Google describes these possible signals and says the types of location data collected depend partly on a child’s device and settings in its child location data notice.

That makes “location on” a broader decision than whether a map is convenient. Consider what information the account collects, how it is used or shared, who can access it, and whether the child can understand and pause the arrangement. The FTC’s advice is to talk about which apps need location access, share only with people the family knows and trusts, and avoid broadcasting a child’s location to the world 24/7 (FTC: Kids and Cell Phones).
How should a family set boundaries?
- Name the purpose. Decide whether sharing is for a particular trip, routine check-in, emergency contact or another defined need. Do not assume that continuous visibility is necessary.
- Agree on access. Tell the child which people can see their location and how access can be changed or removed. Share only with people the family knows and trusts.
- Set when sharing applies. Discuss when location should be on and when to turn it off. The FTC notes that sharing is not always appropriate.
- Review permissions in more than one place. Check both device-level and app-level location settings; a family sharing control may not be the only setting that matters.
- Secure the account and device. Use a strong device passcode and keep software updated, as the FTC recommends for children’s phones.
- Revisit the agreement. A child’s age, independence, route or needs may change. Adjust the arrangement and explain what has changed.
Can built-in parental controls be enough?
Before adding a separate tracking app, check the controls already available in the family’s devices and accounts. The FTC names Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link and Microsoft Family Safety as free starting points for parental controls such as screen-time limits, app and content restrictions, and activity information (FTC family-plan guidance).

Controls vary by platform and do not remove the need to check who has access or what data is collected. Review the current settings and privacy information for the specific service your family uses rather than assuming a family-control feature covers every app or location permission.
Could a connected watch work instead of a phone?
A connected watch may offer a way for a parent to contact a child and identify their location without giving the child a phone. Apple describes Apple Watch For Your Kids as supporting parent contact and location identification through Find My; it also describes Schooltime mode, which can block notifications and disable apps (Apple Watch parental controls).

That is Apple’s description of its product, not independent evidence that a watch is right for every family. Check the particular model, connectivity, features and regional availability before choosing one; those details are not established here. A watch also creates location and account-data considerations, so apply the same rules about purpose, access and privacy as you would with a phone.
What should parents check about privacy, security and COPPA?
Review the service, not just the map
Read the provider’s current privacy notice to understand what location and other account data it collects, why it uses the data, whether it shares it, and what options exist to review or delete it. Google’s notice, for example, explains that location may draw on several device and network signals, with collection depending partly on settings and devices (Google child location data notice).

A monitoring service is another account and data store to secure. An FTC-hosted study, Betrayed by the Guardian: Security and Privacy Risks of Parental Control Solutions, reported issues among the parental-control products it analyzed, including account authentication problems, backend data exposure and insecure transmission of personal information. Its findings apply to the products and period studied; they are not an audit of every current app (FTC-hosted study).

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to covered websites and online services directed to children under 13, and to general-audience services that know they collect personal information from children under 13. Physical location is one type of personal information covered by the rule. For a covered service, the FTC says the operator must notify parents and obtain approval before collecting, using or disclosing that information; parents can review information and retract consent or request deletion (FTC COPPA FAQs).

That is a rule about covered service operators. It is not a blanket legal rule deciding whether a parent may track their own child.

- Fit: Does the family already use a supported phone ecosystem, or is a connected watch more appropriate?
- Practical requirements: Check current device, plan and regional requirements directly before buying or relying on a particular product.
