Usually, no. If you feed wild songbirds and do not keep chickens, ducks, geese or other domestic poultry, you can generally leave the feeder up while monitoring official wildlife notices. Guidance summarized by Cornell Lab of Ornithology says transmission to songbirds and typical feeder visitors has been low, with no general recommendation to remove feeders unless a household also keeps domestic poultry. Audubon experts similarly say feeders do not currently pose a major risk when they are maintained properly.
The answer changes when domestic poultry are on your property. Wild birds can carry highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), including H5N1, into areas where a flock eats or drinks. USDA APHIS advises eliminating wild-bird feeders and waterers, or preventing wild birds from reaching them, to reduce contact with poultry. Local or state wildlife agencies can also issue stricter instructions for a particular outbreak area; those instructions take priority over general national guidance.
The quick decision: which situation describes your yard?
| Situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wild-bird feeder, no domestic poultry, no local removal order | Keep feeding if you can clean the equipment routinely and monitor official updates. | Documented transmission among ordinary songbird feeder visitors has been low compared with waterfowl and some other wild birds. |
| Chickens, ducks, geese or another domestic flock on the property | Remove wild-bird feeders and waterers, or relocate and shield them so wild birds cannot approach the flock. | Feeders can draw potentially infected wild birds toward poultry, creating a preventable contact point. |
| A state, county or local wildlife agency has issued a specific advisory | Follow that geographically specific instruction, even if general guidance allows feeders. | Risk depends on local detections, affected species and conditions that can change faster than national summaries. |
This is a poultry-protection decision more than a human-feeder decision. No controlled study identified in the available guidance establishes that an ordinary backyard feeder drives H5N1 transmission to people. Taking down a feeder should not be described as a proven way to protect a person from infection.
Why the risk is different for songbirds and poultry
Most feeder visitors are not the main concern in current guidance
Songbirds and other common feeder visitors have represented a small share of reported wild-bird detections in the surveillance summary cited by Cornell-linked guidance: about 3% of all cases reported in wild birds. That is an approximate surveillance proportion, not a permanent infection rate. It can change as agencies test more birds, as sampling shifts toward particular species, or if the virus changes. Waterfowl and some other wild birds have been more prominent in avian-influenza detections, which is one reason a feeder frequented by ducks or geese deserves more caution than a clean, elevated songbird feeder.

A feeder can still matter to a backyard flock
Even when songbirds face relatively low documented transmission, a feeder may concentrate wild birds, spilled seed and droppings in one place. If chickens or ducks can reach that area, the setup creates an avoidable route for wild-bird contact. USDA APHIS puts the rationale plainly: “Eliminating feeders and waterers for wild birds helps reduce the risk that wild birds will mingle with your flock and transmit HPAI virus they can carry.” The agency also notes that any type of bird can be infected with and spread avian influenza virus, so poultry owners should use barriers rather than rely on identifying a safe-looking species.
Surveillance totals are not a prediction for your yard
Audubon reported more than 12,000 cases detected in wild birds since 2022, citing USDA APHIS surveillance. That is a dated count of detections, not the percentage of wild birds infected and not a measurement of the risk at every feeder. It shows why conditions warrant monitoring, while the local species mix and agency notices determine what action is sensible at a particular address.
How to decide what to do today
- Check whether domestic poultry are present. Count chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, quail and other kept birds, including a small backyard flock. If you keep any, use the poultry precautions in the next section rather than the songbird-only option.
- Look for a local advisory. Check your state wildlife agency, state animal-health office and relevant federal updates for the county or region. An instruction to remove feeders, stop feeding temporarily or avoid handling wildlife overrides the general “feeder can stay up” guidance.
- Identify what visits the feeder. A feeder used mainly by small songbirds presents a different exposure pattern from one that attracts waterfowl, large flocks or scavengers. Do not assume a species is risk-free; use the visitor pattern to decide how strictly to separate the feeding area from people and poultry.
- Inspect for signs of illness. If sick or dead birds are appearing around the feeder, stop handling the area and seek instructions from wildlife or animal-health authorities. Do not try to diagnose H5N1 from appearance.
- Assess your cleaning routine. Keep the feeder only if you can clean it reliably, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands after the task. If you cannot maintain that routine, temporarily taking it down is a reasonable hygiene choice even when no agency requires removal.
- Recheck as conditions change. Avian-flu detections, affected species and local recommendations are volatile. A decision that is appropriate this week may need revision after a new advisory or unusual mortality event.
If you keep chickens, ducks or other domestic poultry
Remove the attraction or block access
Take down wild-bird feeders and waterers located in or near the flock’s range. If a feeder must remain elsewhere on the property, place it where wild birds can reach it without coming near poultry, feed storage, housing, runs or drinking water. Physical separation is more dependable than trying to keep particular wild species away.

Strengthen the boundary around the flock
- Use fencing, netting, covered runs or other barriers recommended by USDA poultry-biosecurity guidance to prevent wild birds from entering the flock area.
- Keep domestic-bird feed and water under cover where wild birds cannot share them or contaminate them with droppings.
- Clean up spilled feed that could attract wild birds, and avoid placing poultry equipment beside a wild-bird feeding station.
- Use dedicated footwear, clothing and equipment for the poultry area when practical, and follow any state veterinarian or animal-health instructions issued for your location.
Removing a feeder does not replace the rest of biosecurity. A flock can encounter wild birds at ponds, roofs, open feed bins or uncovered runs, so treat feeder removal as one control in a broader separation plan.
How to clean a bird feeder during H5N1 activity
Regular cleaning reduces the buildup of seed dust, droppings and wet organic material that can make any bird-feeding station unhygienic. It is a maintenance measure, not a guarantee that the feeder is free of virus.
- Prepare before touching the feeder. Move children and pets away. Put on disposable gloves, and work outdoors or in a place where wash water and debris will not contact food-preparation surfaces.
- Empty and disassemble it. Discard old, damp or visibly contaminated seed. Separate trays, perches and other removable pieces so hidden residue can be reached.
- Wash off organic material. Scrub surfaces with detergent and water using a dedicated feeder-cleaning brush. Pay attention to seams, drainage holes and the underside of trays.
- Disinfect according to the product label. Use a disinfectant that is labeled for the material and follow its required dilution, contact time, ventilation and safety directions. Do not improvise a stronger mixture, combine products or create sprays and dust clouds around birds.
- Rinse or handle residue as the label directs, then dry completely. Moisture encourages mold and leaves organic material that can interfere with disinfectants. Reassemble only when the parts are clean and dry.
- Finish with personal hygiene. Remove disposable gloves without touching the contaminated outside, dispose of them appropriately and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Set a schedule you can sustain rather than cleaning once after an alarm and then forgetting the feeder. Increase attention when rain, snow, heat, heavy use or visible droppings make the station dirty, and pause feeding if you cannot keep it sanitary.

What to do around sick or dead wild birds
Do not handle them bare-handed
Do not pick up an obviously sick or dead bird, move it to a feeder, or bring it indoors for identification. Keep children and pets away from the bird and from areas contaminated by droppings or carcasses. Avoid touching your face while near wildlife and wash hands if contact occurs.

Contact your state wildlife agency, state animal-health authority or the appropriate USDA reporting line for instructions on a bird that appears unusually ill or for an unusual number of deaths. Agencies may ask for the location, species, number of birds and photographs taken from a safe distance. Follow their directions for disposal or collection; requirements differ by jurisdiction.
When a sick-bird event changes the feeder decision
A single sick bird does not establish that H5N1 is present, but it is a reason to stop handling the feeder and check current local guidance. If authorities identify avian influenza nearby or ask residents to stop feeding temporarily, comply until they lift or revise the instruction.

How to follow changing local guidance
National organizations provide broad principles, while state and local agencies see the species, detections and environmental conditions in your area. Bookmark the wildlife and animal-health pages that cover your county or state, and check them whenever you hear about a nearby mortality event. Look for the date and geographic scope of an advisory: a recommendation for one wetland, county or poultry zone may not apply to every neighborhood in the state.
General guidance can also change as surveillance improves. The approximate 3% songbird figure and the count of more than 12,000 wild-bird detections are snapshots from cited reporting, not timeless thresholds at which every household must remove a feeder. Use the newest agency notice available when making a decision.

What taking down a feeder can and cannot accomplish
It can reduce contact between wild birds and a domestic flock
Removing a feeder near poultry eliminates one artificial gathering point and can reduce the chance that wild birds mingle with the flock. The benefit is greatest when the feeder, its water source and spilled seed are all outside the poultry area and barriers keep birds separated.

It is not proven human protection
There is no identified controlled study showing that ordinary backyard feeders drive H5N1 infections in people or that removing one prevents human infection. Human safety comes from avoiding contact with sick or dead wildlife, using gloves for necessary cleanup, keeping pets and children away, and following public-health instructions after an exposure.
It does not make an unclean feeder safe
A feeder left in place without regular cleaning can accumulate droppings and spoiled seed. Conversely, taking it down once does not address other attractants such as open poultry feed, ponds or uncovered runs. The practical objective is to control wildlife contact and maintain hygiene, not to treat a feeder as an antiviral device.
A practical setup for households that continue feeding songbirds
- Place feeders where you can clean them without entering a poultry enclosure and where spilled seed can be removed easily.
- Use enough spacing between feeding stations to avoid one crowded, heavily contaminated patch.
- Keep a dedicated brush and gloves with the feeder supplies so cleaning does not get postponed.
- Stop feeding temporarily if the station becomes contaminated, if several birds appear ill, or if local officials request a pause.
- Record the date of your last cleaning and check for new agency notices during periods of heightened detections.
These steps support lower-contact feeding while preserving the option to respond quickly when local conditions change.

Bottom line for the common questions
If you are asking, “Should I take down my bird feeder because of bird flu?” the evidence-supported answer is generally no for a household with wild songbirds only, provided no local agency has ordered removal and you can maintain cleaning. If you ask, “Do I need to remove feeders if I have backyard chickens?” the answer is yes: remove them or place them where wild birds cannot approach the flock, and strengthen the rest of your biosecurity measures. For everyone, avoid sick or dead birds, use disposable gloves for cleaning, wash your hands afterward, and follow the most specific current instructions from your wildlife and animal-health authorities.
