Switch to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi when a compatible device is near the router and you want higher speed; keep 2.4 GHz available for farther-away devices and equipment that requires it. If your router uses one Wi‑Fi name for both bands, it may select a band automatically, so you may not need to change anything.
What changes when you use 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz?
The bands trade off speed potential, reach, and compatibility. Google Fiber describes 5 GHz as faster and typically less congested than 2.4 GHz, but that is a general comparison, not a promise of a particular speed in every home. Your router, device, surroundings, and internet service all matter. Google Fiber’s guide to Wi‑Fi frequencies and signal strength explains the trade-offs.
| Factor | 5 GHz | 2.4 GHz |
|---|---|---|
| Speed potential | Generally higher; compatible devices may be able to use speeds unavailable on 2.4 GHz. | Generally lower than 5 GHz. |
| Reach | Shorter; the signal is more likely to weaken with distance or barriers. | Generally reaches farther. |
| Congestion | Typically less congested, though local conditions vary. | Can be more congested. |
| Compatibility | Only devices that support 5 GHz can connect. | Supported by a broader range of devices, including some smart-home equipment that only uses 2.4 GHz. |
These are directional differences, not fixed speed or distance figures. The available official guidance does not establish a universal speed increase or range for household Wi‑Fi.

Try 5 GHz for a nearby compatible laptop, phone, TV, or console when higher throughput matters and the connection remains reliable where you use it. Examples include streaming or transferring files close to the router. This is a practical application of the general band characteristics, not a guarantee that a particular task will improve in your home.

If your router shows separate network names for each band, connect a nearby device to the 5 GHz network and compare its actual speed and reliability with the other option in the same location. Keep using it only if the connection works well for your needs.
When is 2.4 GHz the better choice?
Use or retain 2.4 GHz for devices farther from the router, devices separated by substantial barriers, and devices that do not support 5 GHz. Some smart-home devices are 2.4 GHz only. Setup can also require your phone to be on 2.4 GHz, depending on the phone and router.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Keeping both bands available is often more useful than switching everything to 5 GHz: it lets nearby compatible devices use the faster option without disconnecting equipment that needs the longer reach or broader compatibility of 2.4 GHz.
Do you need to change a router setting?
It depends on how the router presents its bands. Some routers use a single network name and steer devices between active bands; others show separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. With a shared name, the router and client device make the connection choice based on factors such as device support, security, signal strength, and distance. Their behavior varies, so a single network name does not mean every device will always use 5 GHz. Google’s explanation of how Nest Wifi and Google Wifi bands work describes band steering and device selection.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- One network name: Leave automatic band selection in place unless you have a specific connection problem or a device setup requirement.
- Separate network names: Choose 5 GHz for a nearby compatible device when you want to compare performance; choose 2.4 GHz if it connects more reliably or the device requires it.
Router menus and labels differ by manufacturer, so there is no single settings path that applies to every model.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Distance and obstacles: Test closer to the router if practical. Walls and other barriers can weaken the signal.
- Device support: Confirm that the device can connect to 5 GHz.
- Local interference and traffic: Nearby networks and other activity can affect performance.
- Router configuration: Check that the band is enabled and that the router is operating as intended.
- Internet service: Wi‑Fi speed cannot exceed what the connection and service make available. Google’s guidance recommends checking the internet service when measured speeds fall short. See Google’s steps for improving Nest Wifi and Google Wifi speed and performance.
Compare results in the place and on the device where you notice the issue. A speed test near the router may not reflect performance in another room.
