No—don’t run multiple real-time antivirus products at the same time on a Windows PC. Microsoft says overlapping products can affect performance and may cause update or installation errors; they can also contribute to instability or unexpected restarts. For most Windows 10 and 11 users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns off automatically when another antivirus is installed and turned on, then turns back on if that product is uninstalled.
Why running multiple real-time antivirus products can cause problems
Real-time antivirus software monitors files and activity as you use your PC. When multiple products perform that job at once, their overlapping work can affect performance or interfere with updates and installations. Microsoft also warns about possible system instability and unexpected restarts.
These are possible effects, not a guarantee that every pair of products will conflict. Microsoft does not quantify a typical slowdown or say that two products necessarily double CPU use. Its advice is to avoid concurrent real-time protection rather than assume that adding another engine improves security.
Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ and its guidance on protecting a PC from viruses describe these risks. The latter page applies to Windows 10 and Windows 8.1.

What happens to Microsoft Defender when you install another antivirus?
On Windows 10 and 11 client devices, Microsoft says Defender Antivirus turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turned on. If you uninstall that app, Defender turns back on. This describes the normal consumer behavior; it does not mean that installing a second antivirus always leaves two real-time engines running.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 security documentation describes Defender as included in Windows 11 and in Windows 10 devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates after Windows 10 support ended. Microsoft also cautions that a device without another working security product may be vulnerable: Defender can turn on automatically if no other security product is present or the other product expires.

Can you use an on-demand scanner alongside antivirus?
Yes. An occasional scanner is different from a second continuously active real-time antivirus. Microsoft says its Microsoft Safety Scanner and Microsoft Defender Offline can coexist with real-time antivirus because they run only when requested or scheduled. That exception does not change the recommendation against keeping multiple real-time products active together.
What to check if Windows seems to have two active antivirus products
- Check which antivirus Windows recognizes. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and review the security provider information. Confirm which product is listed as the active antivirus.
- Check whether the other product is an on-demand scanner. A tool that runs only when you launch or schedule a scan is not the same as another always-on real-time engine.
- Check whether the PC is managed or running Windows Server. Organization-managed devices and servers can use different Defender configurations from a personal Windows 10 or 11 PC.
- If this is a personal PC, keep one real-time antivirus active. If you want to change products, make sure the replacement is installed and turned on before removing the current protection. Do not disable Defender by hand as a general troubleshooting step.
Microsoft’s compatibility guidance covers configuration dependencies and management distinctions. If Windows reports unexpected protection status, follow the product’s and Microsoft’s supported troubleshooting steps rather than changing enterprise or server settings on a home PC.

Why business and server configurations are different
Organizations may run multiple security tools for different functions, but duplicate real-time protection can still create performance and compatibility problems. Microsoft describes options such as assigning tools distinct roles, using Defender passive mode where supported, and carefully selecting mutual exclusions. Exclusions can reduce protection, and they do not guarantee that interoperability issues will disappear.
In Microsoft Defender for Endpoint environments, passive mode means Defender Antivirus is not the active solution for protection, remediation, or malware blocking; the designated active antimalware product takes that responsibility. See Microsoft’s guidance for running Defender for Endpoint alongside other security solutions, last updated September 29, 2025.

Windows Server does not necessarily switch Defender to passive mode automatically just because a non-Microsoft antivirus is installed. Administrators may need to configure the supported mode or disable or uninstall Defender, depending on the server and deployment. Those are administrator tasks—not instructions for home users to edit the registry or turn off protection.

How to choose one antivirus setup
If you are considering a third-party suite instead of Defender, choose based on a specific need rather than installing a second real-time engine alongside the first. Check whether the product supports your Windows version, whether it becomes the active antivirus, what additional features you need, and whether it is compatible with your other security tools. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that one commercial product is best, or provide a quantified performance or detection-rate comparison.
