Orbistats describes its WebSocket API as a persistent stream for live scores, match events and odds, while polling repeatedly requests updates. That can make WebSockets a better fit when updates need to arrive quickly or many viewers need the same feed. But no verified author-specific before-and-after latency measurements are available here, so there are no personal benchmark numbers to report. Orbistats’ published figures are vendor claims and status-page snapshots, not evidence of a particular migration’s results.
What changes when you replace polling with a WebSocket?
With polling, an application sends repeated requests to ask whether data has changed. If it checks every few seconds, a new event may wait until the next request before the application sees it. A WebSocket instead keeps a connection open so the service can send subscribed updates over that connection. Orbistats documents both approaches and summarizes its guidance as: “For live scores and odds, don’t poll — subscribe instead.” That is the company’s recommendation, not an independent performance finding. A persistent stream can reduce the delay caused by waiting for the next polling interval and avoid repeated polling requests. The actual end-to-end delay depends on the service, network, client and application processing; the available figures do not establish how much a particular application improves after switching.

Are there verified before-and-after latency numbers?
No. The available sources do not provide an author’s baseline or post-migration measurements, test method, sample size or dates. Consequently, a specific improvement cannot be claimed. Orbistats’ status page provides a separate, time-sensitive view. When accessed on October 7, 2026, it reported 99.98% rolling 90-day availability across endpoints and 99.95% rolling 90-day availability for WebSocket Streaming. It also showed median latency for live traffic over the previous 24 hours of 32ms in US East, 28ms in EU West and 41ms in AP Southeast. What a useful migration benchmark should report
To support a genuine before-and-after comparison, record the polling interval and define exactly what latency measures—for example, event publication to on-screen render, rather than request round-trip time. Include the test dates, number of observations, median and tail percentiles, and client and server regions. Keep workload, filters, event volume and other relevant conditions comparable. Without those details, a single latency figure can be misleading.

When does a WebSocket make sense instead of polling?
Orbistats says polling every few seconds may be simple and adequate for low-to-medium traffic, while WebSockets suit sub-second updates or many concurrent viewers. Treat that as product guidance rather than a universal rule: the right choice depends on how quickly the application needs updates, how it consumes them and whether it can manage a persistent connection. - WebSockets: A persistent connection can deliver subscribed updates without waiting for the next polling cycle. The application must also handle authentication, subscriptions, heartbeats and connection recovery.
- Webhooks: Orbistats also documents event-driven POSTs to a registered endpoint. This can suit systems that want events delivered to a server endpoint rather than maintaining a client-side socket. What to check before connecting
Use Orbistats’ current integration documentation for the exact authentication method and message format. Its WebSocket product page describes API-key authentication, channel subscriptions with optional league or match filters, heartbeat behavior and reconnect guidance. It also discusses automatic reconnect and resubscription in client libraries, as well as exponential backoff after abnormal closure. - Confirm which channels and filters the application needs, then subscribe only to relevant updates.
- Plan for connection interruptions: reconnect, restore subscriptions where needed, and avoid aggressive retry loops.

How to decide for your application
- Set a latency target. Decide how quickly an update must reach the user and define where measurement starts and ends.
- Estimate the workload. Consider concurrent viewers, event volume and the request frequency polling would require.
- Choose the delivery model. Use polling when its simplicity and delay are acceptable; consider WebSockets for a live stream or webhooks for server-directed event delivery.
- Test under comparable conditions. Measure request or event-to-render latency, request volume, reconnect behavior and reliability before and after any change. Report the method and distribution, not only a best-case number.
- Validate operational limits. Confirm current authentication, connection limits, subscription behavior and recovery guidance in the documentation for the product and plan in use.
Orbistats’ published documentation supports the distinction between repeated polling and a persistent update stream, but it does not substantiate a personal migration story or its promised before-and-after numbers. Any such claim needs measurements from the specific application.
