Keep an obsolete Apple device only when it remains secure enough for your needs, runs the apps and operating system you require, works reliably, and can be repaired safely at a sensible cost. Replace it when essential security or app support has ended, hardware service is unavailable, the battery or other components create a safety risk, or repair and downtime approach the cost of a suitable replacement.
Apple’s “obsolete” label describes service availability, not an automatic instruction to discard a working device. Check the exact model, its software support, battery condition, repair options and your real workload before deciding.
What Apple means by “vintage” and “obsolete”
Apple measures these labels from the date it last distributed a product for sale, not from the date you bought it. The distinction matters because it determines whether Apple and authorized providers can normally obtain parts.

Apple says owners may obtain service and parts for at least five years after the company last distributed a product, potentially up to seven years, subject to parts availability and applicable law. Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repair for up to ten years after last distribution, also subject to parts availability. That battery exception does not restore general hardware service for an obsolete Mac.

Apple also describes a network of more than 5,000 Apple-certified repair locations. This is a general statement about the repair network; it does not mean every obsolete model can receive current operating-system updates or a full hardware repair.
The decision: keep it, repair it or replace it
Use this order. A failure at the security or safety stage normally outweighs a low purchase price or sentimental value.
- Security and software: confirm that the device can run the operating system, security updates and essential apps required for banking, work, school, identity verification and communications.
- Repair path: identify the exact model and ask Apple or an authorized provider whether parts and service are available in your region.
- Battery and physical safety: inspect for swelling, damage, overheating, unreliable charging or unusual odor. Stop using a device with a damaged or swollen battery.
- Performance and compatibility: test the tasks you actually perform, including calls, authentication, camera use, accessibility features, peripherals, storage and work software.
- Total cost: compare repair, accessories, shipping, downtime, data migration and replacement cost rather than comparing only the repair invoice with a product’s original price.
- End of life: plan a secure trade-in or recycling route and a verified backup before handing the device over.
Keep using it when all of these are true
- It still receives the security updates or mitigations required for your use.
- Every essential app and service works, including current sign-in and authentication requirements.
- The battery and charging system are safe, with no swelling, overheating or repeated failures.
- Its speed, storage and connectivity are adequate for your actual tasks.
- A qualified repair provider can service the failing component at a cost clearly below a suitable replacement.
- You have reliable backups and can tolerate the possibility that a future failure may be unrepairable.
Replace it when any decisive red flag appears
- It cannot run security updates or essential applications, particularly banking, work, school or identity apps.
- Apple and qualified providers cannot obtain the parts needed for a critical repair.
- The battery is swollen, damaged, overheating or causing random shutdowns.
- Charging, storage, display, logic-board or biometric failures are recurring or threaten data integrity.
- Repair, shipping, accessories and downtime approach the cost of a replacement that meets your needs.
How to check software and security support
Identify the exact model first
Record the product family, model identifier, storage capacity and operating-system version. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac; use the model information shown there to distinguish similar generations. Keep the serial number private when seeking public advice.

Test the requirements that matter
Make a short list of non-negotiable tasks: password-manager access, two-factor authentication, banking, workplace or school software, video calls, cellular connectivity, accessibility tools, printers, external displays and cloud storage. Update each app if possible and complete a real sign-in or test transaction. An app that launches but cannot complete modern authentication is not genuinely supported for that task.
If the device cannot install the operating system or security fixes your essential services require, replacement is usually the safer choice. Avoid treating a device as secure merely because it still turns on or can browse the web.
Repair availability and what “obsolete” changes
Check Apple’s current vintage and obsolete list for the exact model, then contact an Apple Store or authorized service provider before buying parts. Vintage service is conditional: a provider may accept the job only while the required component remains in stock. For obsolete hardware, Apple’s policy is to discontinue all hardware service and prevent providers from ordering obsolete-product parts.

Independent technicians may possess used or reclaimed parts, but availability, quality, calibration and warranty vary. Ask in writing what part will be installed, whether important functions will remain calibrated, what warranty applies and how your data will be protected. Do not assume that a part advertised for a similar model is compatible.

Battery health, cost and safety
When a battery replacement is the sensible fix
If the device otherwise meets your software and performance needs, battery service can extend its useful life. Compare the exact-model battery-service quote with the price of a replacement that provides equivalent storage, connectivity and accessibility features. Include labor, shipping, case or charger purchases, data migration and the value of downtime.
Apple states that built-in lithium-ion polymer batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized service provider. Opening a sealed device can damage water resistance, displays, cables or biometric components, so a low-cost unofficial repair is not automatically the lowest-risk option.

How Apple’s battery figures should be interpreted
Apple publishes design targets, not guarantees about an individual battery. Under stated conditions, iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles. iPhone 15 models, Apple Watch, iPad and MacBook are designed for 80% capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles. iPod batteries have an 80% target after 400 complete charge cycles. Actual performance varies with use, charging patterns and environmental conditions.
Check the health indicator available for your model, but treat symptoms as equally important: unexpected shutdowns, severe performance throttling, rapid percentage drops, excessive heat or charging interruptions can justify service even when a displayed percentage looks acceptable.

Power down and arrange professional handling if the enclosure is lifting, the trackpad or screen is being pushed upward, the battery is visibly swollen or damaged, the device overheats unusually, or charging becomes unreliable. Do not puncture, compress, dismantle or ship a device with a swollen, damaged or defective battery. Keep it away from heat and flammable materials while you arrange local guidance.

Compare the real cost of keeping versus replacing

A useful rule is to compare the full two-year ownership cost, not just today’s cash payment. A battery repair may be excellent value when software support and hardware reliability are strong. It is poor value when a second major component is already failing or the device is locked to obsolete software.
Preparing for replacement
- Back up first. Create a current encrypted backup where available and verify that important files, photos, contacts, messages, passwords and two-factor authentication methods can be restored.
- Record account access. Confirm your Apple Account credentials, recovery contacts and authentication devices before erasing the old hardware.
- Check compatibility. Verify cellular bands or eSIM support, ports, display requirements, accessories, accessibility features and software versions on the replacement.
- Transfer data. Use Apple’s built-in device-to-device or backup restoration process, then open critical apps and complete sign-in tests.
- Remove personal access. Sign out of services, disable device tracking where required for transfer, remove payment cards and erase all content only after the new device is working.
- Document the old device’s condition. Photograph damage and record the serial number before a trade-in or shipment.
Trade-in, recycling and environmental disposal
Apple Trade In may provide credit toward a new device or an Apple Gift Card when the device meets eligibility requirements. If it is not eligible for credit, Apple says it will recycle the device and unused accessories securely and for free. Availability, valuation and collection methods vary by country and can change, so confirm the offer for your exact model and region before relying on it.
Never place a device with a lithium-ion battery in ordinary household trash or an unspecialized recycling bin. Use Apple’s program or a local electronics-recycling service that explicitly accepts rechargeable batteries. Keep proof of handover when the device contains sensitive business, health or financial information.
Examples of practical decisions
Old iPhone with poor battery life but current apps
If security updates, authentication and essential apps still work, the phone has no swelling or heat problem, and an authorized battery quote is far below a replacement, battery service is reasonable. Back up before service and ask whether the repair affects water resistance or warranty coverage.
Obsolete iPad used for streaming and reading
It may be acceptable for low-risk offline tasks if it is physically safe and no account requiring current security standards is used on it. Do not use it for banking, password storage or work systems when it can no longer receive required security updates.
Obsolete MacBook with charging and storage failures
Mac laptops can sometimes receive battery-only repair for up to ten years after last distribution, but that does not guarantee logic-board, storage or charging-port service. When several components are failing or parts are unavailable, replacement usually avoids repeated downtime and data-loss risk.
