The $34.99 monthly Apple Upgrade figure is lower than the $49.95 installment payment, but it pays for a lease—not ownership. For the US 256GB iPhone 18 Pro example, Apple lists a $1,199 purchase price, $49.95 per month for 24 months with Apple Card Monthly Installments, or a $34.99 monthly lease payment for 24 months. The right comparison depends on whether you want to return the phone, keep it, or upgrade later, as well as taxes, trade-in value, eligibility, and other costs.
What Apple’s advertised prices include
Apple’s September 2026 US announcement lists the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199, or $49.95 per month for 24 months through Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI). Apple Upgrade advertises lease payments from $34.99 per month for 24 months. The product-specific $34.99 example is for the 256GB model priced at $1,199; it excludes taxes and trade-in credit. Apple also lists a 12-month lease example for that model at $49.99 per month. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement and lease example provide the published figures.

These figures are US prices checked on October 7, 2026, and can change. They do not include a single guaranteed total for every buyer: configuration, tax, trade-in, qualification, and the lease end decision all matter.
Why the lower lease payment is not automatically cheaper
The $34.99 payment is $15 less per month than the advertised $49.95 installment payment, but the two payments lead to different outcomes. ACMI finances a purchase, so completing the installments pays for the phone. Apple Upgrade is a lease: after the scheduled payments, you must return the device, start a new lease if eligible, or pay the lease’s purchase option to keep it. Comparing monthly amounts alone therefore does not establish which option costs less for the phone you ultimately want.

For a useful personal comparison, use the same storage configuration and account for sales tax, any trade-in credit, eligibility, and what you plan to do at the end of the lease. If your goal is to own the phone, include the purchase option rather than treating 24 lease payments as the cost of buying it. Apple’s published pages do not establish one universal lifetime-cost winner across those different choices.
How the lease works and what happens at the end
Eligibility and carrier selection
Apple Upgrade is a US offer subject to eligibility and approval. Apple lists age of majority, a valid SSN or ITIN, an accepted card, an Apple Account in good standing, a Klarna Account, and text-message verification among the conditions. For an iPhone lease, you must select an eligible carrier at checkout: AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Prepaid plans are excluded. Apple says the leased iPhone is unlocked, subject to carrier terms. Return, upgrade, or buy
At the end of the initial lease, Apple says you can return the iPhone in good condition, enter a new lease and upgrade subject to eligibility, or use the purchase option. You do not own the phone just by completing the regular lease payments. If you take no action, the lease may continue month to month for up to six months, with possible payment increases. If you still take no action by the end of that extension, Apple says the purchase fee is charged. Read the applicable lease terms for the amount and conditions of the purchase option.

Early exit and device condition
Ending the lease before its term requires paying all remaining lease payments plus applicable taxes, according to Apple. Returned devices must meet Apple’s stated condition requirements to avoid damage fees. Insurance is not included; loss, theft, or damage can result in additional charges.
What ACMI and paying upfront mean in practice
Apple Card Monthly Installments
Apple describes ACMI as 0% APR financing for qualified customers, subject to credit approval and checkout conditions. For this iPhone purchase, Apple requires selecting an eligible carrier at checkout. Applicable taxes and shipping may be handled separately and may accrue interest at the Apple Card’s variable APR. The purchased iPhone is unlocked, subject to carrier terms, and Apple notes that ACMI terms may change. Check the current Apple checkout terms before relying on the monthly figure.
Paying the listed price upfront
Paying upfront means buying the phone at the listed starting price rather than making lease payments or using ACMI. The $1,199 figure is the announced starting price, not a tax-inclusive total for every configuration. Confirm the selected storage price, applicable taxes, and any trade-in credit at checkout.

Do not confuse Apple Upgrade with the former iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple’s former iPhone Upgrade Program was a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan for an iPhone and AppleCare+, with an upgrade option that required a new application and returning the current phone. Apple’s transition information directs customers to Apple Upgrade, ACMI, outright purchase, or carrier financing instead. Which option fits your plan?
- Choose the lease only if its end conditions suit you. The lower monthly figure may fit a plan to return the phone or move to a new lease, but it does not mean you own the device after 24 payments.
- Consider ACMI if you want to buy over time. It finances a purchase, subject to approval and checkout requirements; account for any separately handled taxes or shipping.
- Pay upfront if you prefer a purchase without monthly financing. Confirm the final configuration price and taxes before comparing it with financing.
