Usually, yes—if your goals, time horizon, cash needs, and risk tolerance have not changed. Continuing a diversified investment plan through falling markets can keep you from trying to time a recovery. But a downturn by itself is not a reason to increase contributions, and continuing is not suitable if you now need the money, cannot tolerate further losses, or have a changed financial plan.
The key distinction is whether you are investing money as you earn it or deliberately holding back an existing lump sum. Regular paycheck contributions are already a form of investing on a schedule. Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is more specifically the choice to divide available cash into equal investments at regular intervals. That choice can make a sudden decline easier to tolerate, but it leaves part of the money uninvested and may earn less than investing the entire lump sum immediately.
What dollar-cost averaging actually means
Investor.gov defines dollar-cost averaging as investing equal portions at regular intervals regardless of market ups and downs. With a fixed-dollar purchase, the same contribution buys more shares when prices are lower and fewer shares when prices are higher. The pattern is mechanical: you invest according to the schedule rather than trying to predict the next market move.

DCA is a purchasing method, not a promise about the result. It does not guarantee a profit, ensure that you buy at the bottom, or prevent losses on money that is already invested. Prices can continue falling throughout the schedule, and an investment can lose value after every installment has been made.

FINRA’s May 19, 2026 explanation uses a hypothetical example: dividing $10,000 into ten monthly investments of $1,000. That example illustrates how a lump sum can be deployed gradually; it is not a recommended amount, number of installments, or timetable for every investor.
First decide which kind of money you have
Contributions from each paycheck
If a 401(k), other defined-contribution plan, or investment account receives money every payday, you are investing money as it becomes available. There may be no accumulated lump sum being intentionally kept in cash. Stopping contributions during a downturn creates a different decision from choosing how to deploy an inheritance or bonus, because the money would otherwise remain uninvested until a later paycheck.
For someone whose plan, ability to pay essential expenses, and tolerance for volatility are unchanged, maintaining the planned contribution is a disciplined way to stay invested. It also avoids turning a market decline into a reason to make an emotional, all-or-nothing decision. The approach still requires a risk-appropriate, diversified portfolio and enough cash for near-term needs.

An existing lump sum
A bonus, inheritance, savings balance, or other investable sum creates a timing choice. Investing it immediately gives the full amount market exposure sooner. Holding it in cash and investing portions over time is DCA in the stricter sense: some of the money waits on the sidelines for later purchases.
The opportunity-cost argument applies directly here. While the cash is waiting, it cannot participate in a market rise. Vanguard’s investor education summarizes its research as favoring immediate lump-sum investment in most cases, while acknowledging that gradual investing can be more tolerable for a risk-averse investor. That finding is about expected exposure over time, not a guarantee that an immediate purchase will outperform in the next downturn.
Immediate investment versus gradual deployment
| Question | Invest the lump sum immediately | Use DCA for the lump sum |
|---|---|---|
| What money is involved? | An existing amount that could be invested today. | The same existing amount divided into scheduled purchases. |
| Market exposure | The full amount is exposed as soon as the investment is made. | Only the installments already invested are exposed; the remainder stays in cash longer. |
| If prices fall immediately | The full purchase can decline soon after it is made. | The uninvested portion avoids that immediate decline, while invested installments can still lose value. |
| If prices rise while cash waits | The full amount participates from the start. | Some gains may be missed because part of the amount was not invested yet. |
| Emotional experience | Can produce sharper regret after an early drop. | Can make it easier to follow a plan without feeling that one bad day determined the outcome. |
| Expected-return evidence | Vanguard says its research favors lump-sum investing in most cases. | Often produces lower returns than immediate investment when markets rise during the deployment period, but may be more comfortable for some risk-averse investors. |
| Execution issues | Fewer purchase events can mean fewer transaction charges. | More transactions may create more fees, and the reserved cash must remain available for later installments. |
Neither column is universally correct. The relevant comparison is not “safe” versus “risky”; both choices involve market risk once money is invested. The difference is how quickly the money is exposed and how much cash remains available during the transition.

What a downturn changes—and what it does not
A falling index or account balance does not, by itself, show that your investment objective has changed. Market direction is only one input. Reconsider the plan if your time horizon is shorter, your income or emergency reserves have changed, you need the money for a known expense, or the potential loss is greater than you can financially or emotionally withstand.

DCA can reduce the amount of a lump sum exposed to an immediate decline because later installments have not been invested yet. It cannot protect the installments already invested, and it cannot stop a decline that continues for months or years. A long downturn can also test whether you will keep making the scheduled purchases; abandoning the plan halfway can leave you with cash after prices have fallen without a deliberate decision about when to reinvest.
Investor.gov’s “Don’t Panic, Plan It!” guidance emphasizes following a diversified plan that matches your risk tolerance. That principle matters more than the label DCA. A schedule attached to an unsuitable portfolio, an unaffordable contribution, or money needed soon is still unsuitable.

A practical decision process
- Identify the source of the money. Mark it as a continuing income contribution or as an existing lump sum. Do not treat a payday contribution as though it were cash you have already accumulated and intentionally withheld.
- Check near-term cash needs. Confirm that the amount is not needed for essential expenses, a planned payment, or another obligation before choosing an investment schedule. Cash reserved for future DCA installments must remain available for those purchases.
- Recheck the goal and time horizon. A goal that is many years away may allow more volatility than a goal approaching its spending date. If the date or purpose has changed, revisit the overall allocation rather than focusing only on the market decline.
- Assess risk tolerance and risk capacity separately. Risk tolerance is how much fluctuation you can stay invested through; risk capacity is how much loss your finances can absorb. A plan fails if either one is exceeded, even when the original rationale was sound.
- Choose the method you can follow. Immediate investment maximizes time in the market for an available lump sum. DCA trades some expected market exposure for a staged entry that may feel easier to maintain. Select the method you can execute without repeatedly changing course.
- Write down the operating rules. Record the amount available, the source, the purchase dates, where the uninvested cash will sit, and the condition that would cause you to reassess—such as a change in income, cash needs, goal, or risk tolerance. Avoid adding a market forecast to the rules.
- Review costs and account mechanics. Check whether each purchase carries a transaction fee, minimum, tax consequence, or processing delay. Repeated fees can erode returns, particularly for small installments.
- Continue or reassess on financial facts, not headlines. A news report about a further decline is not the same as a change in your plan. Reassess when your circumstances change or when the chosen strategy no longer matches your documented constraints.
Why continuing contributions can be difficult
Short-term losses feel like evidence of a mistake
When every statement shows a lower balance, stopping contributions can feel protective. It also converts a temporary market movement into a definite decision to hold cash. If prices later recover, the missed purchases cannot be retroactively made at the earlier levels. The emotional benefit of stopping must therefore be weighed against the risk of abandoning the plan at the point when discomfort is highest.
A long downturn tests commitment
DCA is not a one-day tactic. If you choose a schedule for a lump sum or continue periodic contributions, you need the financial capacity and willingness to keep going through volatility. If you would stop after the first few declines, a different portfolio risk level—not a more elaborate schedule—may be the issue.
Cash can look “safe” while carrying opportunity cost
Uninvested money avoids market losses during the waiting period, but it also misses gains. The longer the deployment period, the longer that trade-off lasts. Vanguard’s comparison notes that gradual investment often has lower returns than lump-sum investing, especially over longer periods, although future markets cannot be known in advance.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling DCA a guarantee. Correct the description: it changes purchase timing; it does not assure a profit or a lower total cost.
- Confusing a paycheck plan with delayed cash. Correct the comparison by identifying whether a lump sum is actually sitting uninvested.
- Stopping because prices fell. Correct the process by reviewing goals, horizon, cash needs, and risk capacity rather than using the decline alone as a signal.
- Keeping installment cash in a place where it may be spent. Correct the process by separating money reserved for future purchases from ordinary spending cash.
- Ignoring transaction charges. Correct the schedule or account choice if repeated fees materially reduce the amount invested.
- Changing the schedule after every headline. Correct the process by documenting rules in advance and reassessing only when personal circumstances or the plan’s assumptions change.
- Assuming a decline makes an asset attractive. Correct the analysis by asking whether the investment still belongs in a diversified, risk-appropriate plan; a lower price alone is not proof of suitability.
How to think about the trade-off in plain numbers
Suppose an investor has the hypothetical $10,000 used in FINRA’s illustration. Investing all $10,000 immediately creates market exposure for the entire amount on day one. Dividing it into ten $1,000 monthly purchases leaves $9,000 uninvested after the first purchase, $8,000 after the second, and so on, assuming each purchase occurs as scheduled. If prices rise during those months, the later $1,000 installments buy fewer shares than they would have bought at the starting price. If prices fall, those installments buy more shares, while the cash waiting for its turn avoids the decline until it is invested.
This arithmetic explains the compromise without predicting which path will win. Immediate investment gives more time exposed to markets; DCA spreads the entry points and can reduce the regret associated with one unfortunate purchase date. The result depends on the sequence of prices, fees, and whether the investor completes the schedule.
When professional guidance may help
General education cannot determine the right action for an individual account. Consider an investment professional when the decision involves a large inheritance, concentrated holdings, tax or legal complications, competing goals, or uncertainty about how much loss your finances can absorb. FINRA and Vanguard both note that advice can be useful in complex circumstances. A professional should help connect the choice to your complete plan, not simply tell you that every downturn is a buying opportunity.

If you are investing from each paycheck and your financial plan is intact, continuing the planned contributions can be a disciplined response to a downturn. If you already hold a lump sum, immediate investment generally provides more market exposure and is favored by Vanguard’s research in most cases, while DCA can be a more tolerable alternative for a risk-averse investor who accepts the opportunity cost of holding cash. In either case, the decision should follow your goals, time horizon, cash requirements, diversified allocation, and capacity to remain invested through a potentially long decline.
