Usually, no—not just because Windows 11 lists an optional driver. Windows installs recommended drivers automatically, while optional driver updates require you to choose them manually. Install one when it clearly matches a device that is malfunctioning or a known hardware requirement. If the listing is unclear, check the PC or component maker’s support page for the exact model and Windows version before proceeding.
What “optional driver update” means in Windows 11
Windows 11 uses Windows Update to deliver recommended drivers automatically. Optional driver updates are a separate category: they are offered for manual selection and are not installed during the normal automatic update process. Seeing an entry in the Optional updates page therefore tells you how Microsoft is delivering it, not whether your particular computer needs it.
Microsoft’s Update Catalog documentation says optional updates may include new or updated driver software for devices connected to the computer. The word “optional” describes the delivery category. It does not establish that the driver is required, that it is newer than the package already installed on your PC, or that it will solve a symptom.
That distinction matters because a working computer can display a driver that applies only to a particular hardware configuration, an older component, or a device whose current driver is already adequate. Conversely, a computer with a genuine device problem may benefit from a relevant optional package. The right decision depends on the device, the problem, the exact driver description and compatibility with your Windows installation.

What the label does—and does not—tell you
“Optional” is not a recommendation to install immediately, but it is not a warning that the package is inherently unsafe either. It tells you that Microsoft is leaving the selection to you. The listing alone does not reveal whether the driver is newer than your installed version, whether it was released for your precise hardware revision, or whether it addresses the symptom you are seeing.
It also does not mean that Windows will keep asking until you install it. Recommended drivers continue through the normal automatic process, while an optional entry can remain unselected. If the list is empty, that only means Windows Update has no optional driver to offer through that view at that moment; it does not prove that the manufacturer has no newer package.
There is no physical product to buy for this decision. The package is software delivered through Windows Update, or downloaded from a PC or component maker’s support page when Microsoft’s fallback applies. The official guidance does not identify a purchase price or require a repair accessory.
The short decision rule
Use this sequence before selecting anything:
- No device problem and no known requirement: leave the optional driver uninstalled. Its presence alone is not evidence that you need it.
- A specific device is malfunctioning or missing expected functionality: identify the listed driver’s device class and determine whether it corresponds to that hardware. A relevant package may be worth trying, but Microsoft does not guarantee that an unspecified driver will fix an unspecified symptom.
- The title is vague, the hardware is unusual, or the issue remains: consult the computer maker’s or component maker’s support page and select a package explicitly compatible with the exact model and Windows version.
- You have confirmed the match: install it from Optional updates and restart Windows afterward, even if the installation does not say that a restart is required.
This is a conditional recommendation, not a rule that every optional driver should be skipped or that every one should be installed.
How Windows 11 separates automatic and manual drivers
Recommended drivers
Recommended drivers are part of Windows Update’s automatic delivery. Microsoft describes Windows 11 as installing these drivers automatically, so most users do not need to search for them or approve each package.
Optional drivers
Optional drivers appear for a manual choice. Microsoft’s Windows driver-delivery guidance describes this as a distinction between Automatic and Manual delivery. For Windows 10 version 2004 and later, manually delivered drivers are shown under “View optional updates” instead of being distributed during a routine scan. Windows 11 presents the same basic distinction through its Optional updates page.
Manual availability should not be confused with a warning that the driver is unsafe, nor with proof that it is an upgrade for every PC. It simply means Windows is not applying that package without your selection.
Where to find the list
Open the list through this Windows 11 path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand the driver category if one is shown.
Microsoft says to select the applicable driver, choose Download and install, and restart after installation. The restart recommendation applies even when none of the listed updates explicitly requests one.
If Optional updates is empty, there is no optional driver currently being offered through that Windows Update view. Do not interpret an empty list as proof that no manufacturer driver exists; it only describes what Windows Update is offering at that time.

How to decide whether a listed driver applies
Match the device class
Read the driver title and identify the hardware category. In an April 24, 2026 Windows Insider Blog post, Microsoft said it had added device class information to driver-update titles to make their intended hardware clearer. Examples of classes mentioned by Microsoft include display, audio, battery, extension and HDC. The exact appearance of this information can vary with rollout and Insider channel availability.
Use the class as a relevance clue. A display entry deserves attention when your display adapter or graphics behavior is the problem; an audio entry is relevant to sound hardware; a battery entry concerns battery-related hardware. The class is not a guarantee that the package is needed or compatible with every device in that category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch the symptom to the hardware
Start with the actual fault rather than the existence of an update. Examples of a useful match include a sound device that has stopped producing audio and an optional package clearly identified for that audio hardware, or a display-related issue paired with a driver identified for the display device. This still does not prove the package will resolve the problem, but it gives you a reason to consider it.
If the computer is functioning normally and you cannot identify a device-specific reason, there is no established benefit in selecting the package merely to make the list disappear.
Check the exact model and Windows version
A driver must correspond to the hardware installed in your PC and to the Windows version you are running. A generic class name is not enough when several models or revisions exist. If you cannot tell which device the title refers to, use the manufacturer’s support information rather than guessing.
Compare the installed and offered hardware context
Before installing, write down the affected device, the complete title shown in Windows and the PC or component model. If the manufacturer support page lists several revisions, confirm the exact model rather than choosing the closest-looking name. Also check that the page names the Windows version installed on your computer. These checks are more informative than assuming that a newer-looking date or a broad label automatically means “better.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the listing contains several driver entries, treat them independently. A relevant audio driver does not make an unrelated battery or extension driver relevant to the same symptom. Select only the package connected to the device or requirement you can identify.
Two ways to obtain a driver
| Route | Best use | What to verify | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update Optional updates | A listed package clearly matches a device with a problem or a known requirement. | Device class, affected hardware and the Windows installation it is intended to support. | The listing alone does not prove that the driver is necessary or that it will fix the symptom. |
| PC or component manufacturer support page | Windows Update cannot find a suitable driver, or the model and compatibility are unclear. | Exact PC or component model and compatibility with the installed Windows version. | You must identify the correct model and package yourself; Microsoft does not state that this route is always superior. |
Microsoft specifically recommends checking the hardware manufacturer’s website when Windows Update cannot find a driver or an updated driver for a device. That advice is model-specific: use the support page for the computer or component actually installed, not a similarly named product.
The two routes are not competing promises of quality. Windows Update is convenient when the offered entry clearly matches the affected hardware. The manufacturer route supplies the model-specific information Microsoft says to consult when Windows cannot provide an appropriate package. Compare both routes using four questions: does the device and model match, is the Windows version supported, is there an actual problem or requirement, and does the title clearly identify the hardware class?

When installing an optional driver makes sense
A device is malfunctioning
If a particular device is failing, missing expected functionality or behaving differently from its normal operation, an optional driver that clearly identifies that device can be a reasonable troubleshooting step. Record the device and the offered driver title before installing so you know what change you made.
A feature requires a newer device driver
Some hardware features depend on a compatible driver. If documentation for your exact PC or component identifies a driver requirement and the Optional updates entry matches that hardware, manual installation may be appropriate. The available Microsoft material does not establish a universal feature list or promise that any particular optional package enables a particular function, so verify the requirement for your model.
Windows Update has not supplied an adequate package
When Windows cannot find an appropriate driver, Microsoft’s fallback is the manufacturer’s support site. A model-specific package may be the correct next step, especially when the Optional updates title does not identify the hardware clearly.
The device class and symptom line up
A clear pairing is the strongest practical reason to consider the update: for example, an audio-class entry when the audio device is the one failing, or a display-class entry when display behavior is the issue. This is a reasoned troubleshooting choice, not a Microsoft guarantee. If the symptom is unrelated to the listed class, installing the package is unlikely to be a justified first step on the information available.
When leaving it alone is the sensible choice
- Your PC and all relevant devices work normally, and you have no documented driver requirement.
- You cannot identify which installed device the entry targets.
- The title suggests a device class unrelated to the issue you are trying to solve.
- You are considering it solely because it is listed, without a device-specific reason.
- The package’s compatibility with your exact PC, component and Windows version is uncertain.
Skipping an optional entry does not prevent Windows from continuing to deliver recommended drivers through its normal automatic process. It also avoids making an unverified change when there is no problem to address.
Step-by-step: installing a relevant optional driver
- Describe the problem. Note which device is affected and what functionality is missing or malfunctioning. If there is no concrete problem or requirement, stop here and do not install solely because an entry appears.
- Open the list. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Read the complete driver title. Look for the device class and any model information shown by Windows. Treat the class as a clue, not proof of suitability.
- Confirm the hardware match. Compare the entry with the device that is actually affected. If you cannot make that match, consult the PC or component maker’s support page.
- Select only the relevant package. Do not select unrelated driver entries simply because they are available.
- Choose “Download and install.” Let Windows complete the installation rather than interrupting the process.
- Restart Windows. Microsoft recommends restarting after installation even when no individual update says a restart is required.
- Check the original symptom. Test the affected device or feature using the same action that exposed the problem. If it remains unresolved, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support information instead of repeatedly installing unrelated optional entries.
What to do when the listing is unclear
Do not infer compatibility from a broad label such as audio, display or battery. First identify the computer model and, where relevant, the component model. Then look for a support page that names that model and the Windows version installed on the computer. Microsoft’s guidance directs users to the hardware manufacturer when Windows Update cannot provide an appropriate driver.
If both Windows Update and the manufacturer information are ambiguous, the available evidence does not support a confident install-or-skip answer for that specific package. The missing details are material: the device name, driver version, current installed version, model and the symptom being investigated. Without them, no source can establish that the offered driver is newer, compatible or likely to solve the issue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing everything listed: Several optional entries can target unrelated device classes. Availability is not a reason to select all of them.
- Assuming “optional” means “recommended: Recommended drivers are the automatically delivered category; optional drivers require your manual choice.
- Using a similar model’s package: Microsoft’s fallback refers to the exact PC or component. A nearly identical product name is not enough evidence of compatibility.
- Skipping the restart: Microsoft says to restart after installation even when no individual entry requests it.
- Repeating unrelated installs after a failed fix: If the symptom remains, recheck the device match and consult the manufacturer instead of cycling through entries with no connection to the fault.
- Treating a missing class label as a decision: Microsoft described class labels in an April 24, 2026 Windows Insider Blog post, but rollout and channel can affect what appears. Use model and device information when the label is absent.
Troubleshooting after installation
The original problem remains
A manual driver selection is not a guaranteed repair. Recheck that the entry matched the affected device and compare it with the manufacturer’s package for the exact model and Windows version. Microsoft’s documentation explains the delivery method and the manufacturer-site fallback; it does not promise a fix for an unspecified symptom.
The entry does not appear on another PC
Optional listings depend on what Windows Update offers for the particular hardware and installation. A different model may show a different list, and an empty list means only that no optional driver is currently offered through that view.

The title does not show a device class
Microsoft’s newer class labels were described in an April 24, 2026 Insider Blog post, and interface changes can depend on rollout and channel. Do not treat the absence of a class label as evidence that a package is required or irrelevant. Use the model and device match instead.
Windows Update cannot find a driver
Follow Microsoft’s stated fallback: check the PC maker’s or component maker’s website for a package compatible with the Windows version. Choose the support page for the exact hardware, because a driver for a similar model may not be appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical checklist
- What exact device is affected?
- Is there an actual malfunction or a documented feature requirement?
- Does the Optional updates title identify the same device class?
- Does the package match the exact PC or component model?
- Is it compatible with the Windows version installed?
- If any answer is unclear, have you checked the manufacturer’s support page?
- After installing, have you restarted and retested the original symptom?
If the first two questions have no clear answer, wait. If the device, class, model and Windows-version checks line up, the manual installation is a defensible troubleshooting step. If they do not, the evidence is insufficient to call the update necessary.

Yes. Microsoft recommends restarting after installation even when none of the updates explicitly requires a restart.
Bottom line for most Windows 11 PCs
Optional driver updates are manual offers, not a to-do list. Leave them alone on a normally functioning PC unless you can connect a particular entry to a real device problem or a known requirement. When you do have that connection, verify the device class and exact model, install through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, select Download and install, and restart. For unclear or unavailable packages, use the manufacturer’s support page for a driver compatible with your exact hardware and Windows version.
