Yes—if the app comes from the developer’s authentic distribution channel and macOS’s security checks do not raise a serious warning. Apple calls the App Store the safest place to get Mac apps, but legitimate software is also distributed directly by developers. Gatekeeper, Developer ID signing, notarization, certificate-revocation checks and malware detection reduce the risk. They do not prove that an app is harmless, well-designed, private or suitable for your needs.
The short answer: when an outside-App-Store install is reasonable
Installing a Mac app downloaded from a developer’s website can be a sensible choice when all of the following are true:
- You reached the developer’s genuine domain rather than a sponsored lookalike download page.
- The developer identifies the product and publisher consistently across its own documentation.
- macOS identifies the developer, accepts the app’s signature and does not report malware, revocation or tampering.
- The app is notarized when the applicable macOS and software rules require it, or you have a specific, independently checked reason for an exception.
- You understand what the app does and what permissions it requests.
If macOS says an app will damage your computer, reports known malicious content, or says authorization has been revoked, stop. Do not treat the warning as an inconvenience to click through. Redownload from the authentic source, contact the developer, or choose another application.

What the App Store adds—and what direct distribution leaves to you

Direct distribution can also be the only way to obtain a developer’s latest release, a specialist utility, a plug-in, or a version that cannot be sold through the App Store. Those practical benefits do not justify bypassing a malware or tampering warning.
How macOS checks a downloaded app
Developer ID signing establishes identity and integrity
For software distributed outside the Mac App Store, a developer can sign the app with an Apple-issued Developer ID certificate. When macOS validates that signature, it can establish two limited facts: which identified developer signed the software, and whether the signed contents changed after signing.
That is an integrity and provenance check, not a safety certificate. A developer can sign a poorly designed app, an app with excessive data collection, or an app that later becomes compromised. A valid signature does not mean Apple recommends the product.
Notarization is an automated Apple scan, not a human review
The developer submits software to Apple’s notary service. Apple describes the service as an automated system that scans for known malicious content and code-signing problems. If the submission passes, Apple creates a notarization ticket. The ticket may be stapled to the app and is also published online so Gatekeeper can recognize the notarization when the app is first opened.
Apple Developer Documentation states: “Notarization of macOS software is not App Review.” Notarization therefore does not promise that an app is bug-free, privacy-friendly, useful, or free from every future or novel threat. It indicates that the submission passed Apple’s automated checks under the rules in effect for that software.

Gatekeeper combines several signals
When you open a downloaded app, installer or plug-in, Gatekeeper checks the developer identity, the app’s notarization status where applicable, and whether the software has been altered. macOS also checks for known malware and certificate revocation. It asks for user approval before the first opening of software downloaded from outside the App Store.
Gatekeeper is one layer of macOS security. Apple also describes other protections, including XProtect. None of these layers guarantees protection from every malicious, deceptive or simply unwanted program.
What “notarization required” means across macOS versions
Apple’s user guidance says macOS Catalina and later require notarization by default for downloaded software. The developer rules are more specific than that short consumer description:
- Beginning with macOS 10.14.5, software signed with a new Developer ID certificate, and new or updated kernel extensions, must be notarized to run under the stated rules.
- For macOS 10.15, software built after June 1, 2019 and distributed with Developer ID must be notarized.
These requirements vary by software category, signing certificate and operating-system rule. Do not assume that every executable, installer, plug-in or legacy component has exactly the same requirement. If an older app fails, look for a current build from the developer rather than assuming a security override is the right fix.
A pre-install checklist for software outside the App Store
1. Start at the developer’s real domain
Type the address yourself, use a bookmark you created earlier, or follow a link from the developer’s verified documentation. Be wary of search advertisements and download pages that imitate a product’s branding. Confirm that the product name, publisher name and support contact match the developer’s own instructions.

2. Download the expected file and distribution format
A normal Mac download may be a disk image, installer package or archive. A file with an unexpected extension, a password-protected archive from an unknown host, or a “codec” or “system cleaner” offered as a prerequisite deserves extra scrutiny. Do not run a second installer merely because a page says it is required to start the first one.

3. Check the publisher and release information
Read the developer’s release notes, compatibility statement and support policy. Make sure the release supports your macOS version and Mac architecture. A current, supported build is preferable to an old copy obtained from a mirror, forum attachment or software-collection site.
4. Note the exact macOS alert
The wording matters. “Apple cannot check [app] for malicious software” is different from “This app will damage your computer” or “The app is damaged.” Treat each message according to the response table below rather than applying one universal workaround.
5. Consider the computer’s management status
A work, school or family-managed Mac may enforce an approved-app list, hide security controls or prevent the Open Anyway exception. Ask the administrator before attempting an override. A restriction is a policy decision, not evidence that the app itself is malicious.
How to install a direct-download app safely
- Obtain the installer from the developer’s authentic distribution channel. Keep the original download until the app opens successfully, and avoid repackaged copies.
- Install normally. Read the installer’s destination and permission requests. Do not enter an administrator password for an unrelated component or an unexpected helper.
- Try the first launch. Gatekeeper performs its checks when you open the downloaded app and may display an alert instead of launching it.
- Read the alert exactly. A developer-verification or notarization warning calls for independent verification; a malware, revoked-authorization or damage warning calls for stopping.
- Verify the source before any exception. Compare the download with the developer’s current release information and ask the developer about a replacement build if the warning is unexpected.
- Use an exception only for a verified app. On an unmanaged Mac, Apple documents the Open Anyway route described in the next section. Confirm only when you are certain the app is trustworthy and has not been tampered with.
- Review the app after it opens. Check System Settings privacy permissions and remove the app if it requests access unrelated to its stated function.
What each Gatekeeper warning means and what to do

Apple’s “Open Anyway” exception, step by step
Apple documents an exception for a user who is certain that an app is trustworthy and has not been tampered with. The sequence begins with the failed launch, because macOS records that the app was blocked.

- Try to open the app once and dismiss the warning.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the Security section.
- Select Open Anyway for the blocked app.
- Read the follow-up warning and confirm only if you have independently checked the source, publisher and file.
macOS saves an exception for that app. This does not mean the app passed notarization, and it does not turn off every macOS protection for all future downloads. It simply records your decision for that application. Interface wording can vary by macOS release, and the control may be unavailable when an administrator manages the Mac.
When not to override Gatekeeper
- The warning says the app will damage the computer or identifies known malicious content.
- The certificate or authorization has been revoked and the developer has not supplied a clear replacement.
- The download came from a mirror, file-sharing post, unsolicited message or lookalike domain.
- The app is unexpectedly requesting administrator credentials, full disk access, screen recording or other powerful permissions.
- The developer cannot explain why the build is unsigned, unnotarized, damaged or modified.
- You are using a work or school Mac and do not have permission to install software.
In these cases, choose an App Store version, a current build from the developer, or an alternative application. Repeatedly clicking through warnings removes a useful signal without resolving the underlying problem.

macOS can be configured to allow applications from the App Store and identified developers, or to restrict installation to the App Store. The available labels and controls depend on the macOS release. If a setting is missing, greyed out or immediately reverts, mobile-device-management policy may be enforcing it.
Management is common on company, school and shared Macs. An administrator can prevent outside software, require approval, or remove the Open Anyway route. Do not attempt to defeat that policy; request the approved package or ask IT to evaluate the developer and version.
Privacy, malware and the limits of Apple’s checks
Apple says Gatekeeper’s known-malware and certificate-revocation checks are not combined with information about Apple users or devices, are not used to learn what individuals use, and that IP addresses associated with Developer ID certificate checks are not logged. These are Apple’s stated practices for those checks, not a promise that an app itself collects no data.

Gatekeeper and notarization address specific risks: altered software, unidentified or revoked signing, and known malicious content detected by Apple’s systems. They do not evaluate every privacy practice, advertising behavior, business model, security bug or future threat. The App Store also is not risk-free. Review permissions, privacy documentation and the developer’s reputation regardless of distribution channel.
Practical decisions for common situations
A well-known developer offers a current notarized build only on its website
Downloading from that developer’s authentic domain is generally reasonable. Confirm the publisher identity, read the release notes, let Gatekeeper complete its checks and review permissions after installation.
A small utility is unsigned or repeatedly shows a developer-verification alert
Ask whether the developer provides a newer signed and notarized release. If not, use the utility only when you can independently verify the developer, download and file, understand the permissions and accept the maintenance risk. Do not override a malware or damage alert.
An old app stopped opening after a macOS upgrade
Check whether the developer has updated the app for your macOS version and architecture. The failure may reflect changed notarization, signing or system compatibility rules. A legacy exception can expose you to an unmaintained program; replacing it is usually safer than forcing it to run.
A work Mac blocks an app you need
Contact IT or the device administrator. They can verify the package, approve it through management tools or provide an organization-tested alternative. Do not install a personal copy or try to remove the restriction.
Bottom-line decision rule
Use the App Store when an equivalent app is available and convenience and Apple’s review process matter most. Use direct developer distribution when the developer is authentic, the release is current, Gatekeeper’s checks succeed and you have a clear reason to obtain it outside the store. Treat notarization as evidence that Apple’s automated checks passed—not as App Review or a guarantee of safety. A serious malware, revocation or damage warning is a stop sign; a verification warning is a prompt to investigate, not an instruction to click through.
