Yes—help the mice. In the Mummy and Daddy side quest, accepting their request and leaving the undead alone keeps the quest active. Shooting the undead in the sewer cell causes an immediate quest failure.
Where the mice quest starts
The encounter is in City of Orphans > Sewers. Use the sewer Lantern as your landmark. On the opposite side of the Lantern, look behind the ladder for a mouse burrow. Interact with that burrow to begin Mummy and Daddy and accept the mice’s request.

The first interaction gives William Cheese. You do not need to find the item elsewhere beforehand; it is awarded when you agree to help.
What to do in the sewers
- Locate the first burrow. From the City of Orphans Sewers Lantern, cross to the opposite side and check behind the ladder.
- Accept the mice’s request. Interacting with the burrow starts Mummy and Daddy and adds Cheese to William’s inventory.
- Continue through the sewer route. Follow the passage until you reach the chest that contains the Sewers Key.
- Burn the gold vines. The vines are to the left of the Sewers Key chest. Clear them so you can continue along the route.
- Inspect the next burrow. A second burrow explains that undead are being kept in a nearby cell.
- Do not attack the undead. Leave the cell occupants alone and continue the quest without firing at them.
What happens if you shoot the undead?
Shooting the undead instantly fails Mummy and Daddy. The walkthrough’s warning is unambiguous: “DO NOT SHOOT THEM or this instantly fails the quest.” This is not a later reputation penalty or a temporary setback; the documented result is immediate quest failure.

Does helping the mice give a better reward?
The available walkthrough documents the Cheese and the failure condition, but it does not record the quest’s final completion step or a final reward. Do not assume a unique item, achievement, currency payout, or alternate ending from the mice encounter unless the game itself confirms it.
The broader side-quest guidance associated with the walkthrough says that documented dialogue choices do not change rewards, but that general note is not a substitute for a listed final reward for this specific quest. The reliable practical difference here is whether the quest survives: helping and avoiding the shooting preserves it, while shooting ends it in failure.

How to avoid an accidental failure
Keep your weapon discipline
When you reach the cell, do not fire through the bars, test damage, or shoot at an undead target to see whether combat is intended. A single attack is enough to trigger the failure condition.

After the first burrow gives you Cheese, follow the route to the Sewers Key chest, clear the gold vines on its left, and then interact with the next burrow. That sequence confirms you are at the story beat where the no-shooting rule applies.
If the quest has already failed
The documented outcome is quest failure. Reload a save from before the undead were shot if you want to preserve Mummy and Daddy; otherwise, the available guidance does not establish a way to restore the failed quest during the same playthrough.
