Usually, no. You do not need to finish every side quest before a final mission, but you should stop and check the game’s point-of-no-return warning, identify quests that affect the ending, and make a separate save before an irreversible-looking transition. Some games restore free exploration after the credits; others permanently close access, and the difference is specific to the game, ending and story checkpoint.
Why there is no universal answer
“Final mission” can mean very different things. In one game it starts a temporary sequence and returns you to the open world afterward. In another, it advances the story past a regional checkpoint, removes unfinished quests, or ends the protagonist’s story without restoring the pre-finale world.
The label side quest is also too broad to predict the consequence. An optional mission might be ordinary background content, a prerequisite for an ending route, the last chapter of a companion’s story, a source of a unique reward, or a quest that disappears when the plot advances. Treat each quest according to what it changes, not according to its menu category.

There is no cross-game rule that says every side quest must be complete—or that every side quest can safely wait. The game’s warning, the exact checkpoint and the ending you choose determine the answer.

What a point-of-no-return warning really tells you
A warning usually means that entering the next sequence changes the state of the world. It does not always tell you whether that change is temporary or permanent.
- Temporary lockout: The finale may block travel and normal activities while the mission runs, then return you to free exploration.
- Permanent missability: A story checkpoint may remove earlier quests, close a region or prevent a character mission from being started later.
- Ending-specific closure: The game may intentionally end on a particular conclusion instead of placing you back before the final mission.
- Conditional impact: A quest may not disappear, but its outcome may affect who appears, which ending is available or how much context the finale provides.
Read the warning literally, then verify the consequences for the quests you care about. A message that says “you will not be able to return” is stronger than one that merely says “continue to the final mission,” but neither wording replaces a current, game-specific guide.
How to decide before entering the finale
- Pause at the warning. Do not confirm the transition until you know whether the game creates a return point, restores free roam after the ending or ends access entirely.
- List the quests that matter to you. Mark missions tied to companions, factions, romance, unique equipment, unresolved character arcs or alternate endings. Ignore low-value activities if they do not affect your goal.
- Check each quest at the exact checkpoint. Search for the game, platform or edition and the named mission—not just a general “missables” list. Patches and expansions can change availability.
- Separate lockout from disappearance. A mission can be unavailable during the finale but playable after the credits. Another can be permanently removed when the story crosses a regional or chapter boundary.
- Create a manual save in a separate slot. Save before accepting the final mission or entering the marked area. Keep that file instead of overwriting it with an autosave.
- Choose your stopping point based on your objective. Complete ending-critical quests first if you want a particular conclusion; continue immediately if seeing the story matters more than optional content; finish everything if you are pursuing completion.
Which side quests deserve priority?
Quests that can change an ending
Prioritize missions that unlock an ending route, determine who helps during the finale, alter a character’s fate or add a final decision. In Cyberpunk 2077, a guide specifically notes that some side missions can affect the ending, while other activities can be left unfinished without changing the conclusion. That distinction makes a blanket “complete everything” rule unnecessary, but it also means you should identify the consequential missions before proceeding.

Quests that become unavailable
A mission is urgent when the game or a reliable current guide says a checkpoint removes it. This can happen because a region changes ownership, a character leaves, a settlement is destroyed or the story advances beyond the relevant chapter. Record the mission name and the checkpoint that closes it; a generic list may not apply to your edition or patch.
Quests with unique rewards or permanent choices
Some optional missions grant equipment, abilities, companions or decisions that cannot be reproduced later. If the reward supports your planned build or the choice has lasting narrative consequences, complete that mission before the finale even if the game otherwise permits post-game exploration.
Quests you can safely postpone
Routine contracts, collectible hunts and errands with no ending, region or reward dependency are usually the best candidates to leave until later. “Usually” is important: confirm that the game’s post-finale state preserves them before relying on this category.

These examples are not interchangeable rules. A result documented for one title, ending or checkpoint should not be generalized to another game in the same genre.

Temporary lockout versus permanent missability
Signs of a temporary lockout
- The game explicitly says you can return after the mission.
- A post-game state, free-roam mode or chapter replay is documented.
- The ending returns you to a pre-finale save or open-world state.
- Guides describe unfinished quests remaining on the map after the credits.
Signs of a permanent miss
- The warning says the story will continue without a return.
- A named region or settlement changes permanently at the checkpoint.
- A companion, faction or quest giver leaves before the mission can be accepted.
- The ending is designed to stop the story rather than resume exploration.
- The only recovery method is an earlier manual save, replay or a new playthrough.
When the evidence is mixed, treat the transition as permanent for planning purposes and preserve your save. You can still proceed immediately; the save simply protects the alternative.
Choose a plan that matches your goal
If you mainly want to see the ending
Complete quests that directly affect the ending, your preferred companion or a major decision. Leave routine activities for afterward only when the game confirms post-finale access. Make a manual save so you can return to the pre-finale state if the ending does not restore exploration.

If you want the character stories
Finish companion, romance and faction arcs before the final mission. These quests often provide context that makes the finale more meaningful, and their availability can depend on relationships or earlier choices rather than the final mission alone.
If you want a specific reward or build
Obtain unique equipment, abilities and upgrade materials before crossing the checkpoint. A post-game mode may preserve quests but still make a missed reward unavailable for the finale itself.
If you want a completionist run
Use a current missables guide for the exact game, platform and edition. Follow its named checkpoints rather than assuming the final mission is the only cutoff. Keep separate saves before regional transitions, major chapter changes and the final sequence.

If you prefer an unspoiled first playthrough
Read only the minimum needed: whether the next step is reversible, which quests are permanently missable and where to save. Avoid full ending guides if discovering outcomes yourself is more important than achieving 100 percent completion.

A save is useful only if it remains available and identifiable. Use a manual slot named for the mission or checkpoint, and do not rely solely on an autosave that the game may overwrite during the finale.
- Keep one save before accepting the final mission.
- Keep another immediately before a warning-marked doorway, region or story objective if the game has several transitions.
- Do not overwrite the pre-finale file after watching the ending.
- After the credits, test whether travel, quest markers and vendors are available before deleting older saves.
- If the game offers chapter replay or New Game Plus, verify what carries over; replay is not necessarily equivalent to returning to the original world state.
A separate save is a precaution, not a promise that every game supports convenient restoration. Some endings deliberately prevent a return, as the official explanation for The Tower in Phantom Liberty makes clear.
If you already started the final mission
Do not assume you have lost everything. First, check whether the game allows you to abandon the objective, fast-travel out or load a recent pre-mission autosave. If the finale has begun but the game offers a chapter restart, use that option only after checking what progress it resets.
If you have completed the ending, look for a post-game prompt, free-roam continuation, chapter select or a returned pre-finale save. If none exists, load the manual save you created before the transition. Without an earlier save, the remaining options may be replay, New Game Plus or a new playthrough, and those options may not restore the same quest state.
A practical pre-finale checklist
- Have I read the exact warning shown by the game?
- Which unfinished quests affect an ending, companion, faction or unique reward?
- Does this named checkpoint close a region or quest chain?
- Will the game restore free exploration after this ending, or does that depend on the ending route?
- Have I checked guidance for the current patch, platform and edition?
- Is my manual save in a separate, clearly labeled slot?
- Am I prioritizing the story, character content, rewards or full completion?
The safest general rule is simple: do not finish every side quest by default; finish the side quests whose loss would matter to you, verify the game’s specific cutoff, and preserve a save before crossing it.
