Cloning a failing hard drive is not a reliably safe way to recover its data. A clone copies what the source drive can still read; it does not repair the drive, and unreadable data may not make it into the copy. If the files are irreplaceable or the drive may be physically damaged, consider professional recovery before attempting an extended do-it-yourself process.

What cloning can—and cannot—do

A disk clone copies the contents of one disk to another. It is commonly used for migration, such as moving a Windows system to a replacement drive. A clone is not a repair, and it does not guarantee that every file or partition on a failing source can be read and copied.

Cloning also is not the same as having a separate, verified backup. Seagate’s DiscWizard user guide recommends making a full-disk backup and validating it before cloning. If you already have a complete backup and have checked that its files are accessible, cloning may be unnecessary for recovering those files.

Choose the next step by the data and the drive’s condition

Situation More appropriate next step Why
You have a complete, verified backup Use the backup to restore or migrate, rather than relying on the failing source. A validated backup is a separate copy; a clone depends on what the source can still read.
The drive is readable, there is no indication of physical damage, and the data is replaceable or already backed up You may consider a routine migration to a compatible, healthy destination drive. Cloning guidance is primarily written for migration. It does not promise success with a failing drive.
The data is irreplaceable, the drive may be physically damaged, or it cannot be read reliably Pause before further do-it-yourself attempts and consider a professional recovery service. A service can assess the device and determine whether it qualifies; recovery is not guaranteed.
You need particular files rather than a bootable system Decide first whether a verified backup already contains them; if not and the data is especially valuable, consider professional recovery. A system clone is a migration task, not a promise that selected files—or all files—will be recovered.

Seagate advises backing up data before running its diagnostic tests. Its support guidance describes SeaTools test results and replacement advice, but that guidance is not a universal triage protocol for every failing drive. Do not assume that repeated scans, repairs, or additional attempts are safe in every failure scenario.

If you proceed with a routine migration

  1. Confirm that a backup is complete and usable. Seagate recommends a full-disk backup validated before cloning. Do not treat an unverified copy as your safety net.
  2. Check the destination against your computer. Seagate recommends an internal SSD or HDD for a Windows boot clone rather than an external USB drive. Verify the computer’s supported interface, form factor, capacity, and boot compatibility; the general recommendation does not guarantee that a particular drive fits every system.
  3. Follow the cloning utility’s instructions for setup. Seagate’s standard DiscWizard setup describes placing the destination in the same location as the source, with the source connected elsewhere, such as through an external enclosure. This is migration guidance, not evidence that continuing to use a physically failing drive is safe.
  4. Check the result before retiring the source. Confirm that needed files are accessible and, for a system migration, that the new drive boots properly. Seagate advises retaining the source and not formatting or discarding it until the new disk is confirmed to boot.

A replacement drive can provide a healthy destination for migration, but it does not recover data from the failing source. Likewise, an enclosure can be part of a standard setup; it is not a fix for drive failure.

When professional recovery is worth considering

Professional recovery is a separate option for damaged or corrupted storage, especially when the data is difficult or impossible to replace. Seagate’s service process determines whether a device is eligible, and terms can vary by region. Check the current service details for your location before sending a drive; neither eligibility nor successful recovery should be assumed.

Keep the original until you have verified the outcome

Do not erase, format, or discard the source merely because a cloning process reports completion. First check that the files you need are present and usable; if the goal was a bootable system, confirm that the replacement starts correctly. Keeping the original available preserves the option to reassess if the clone is incomplete.
