Yes—clear an app’s data on a Fire Stick when the app is malfunctioning or Amazon’s troubleshooting steps call for it. The option resets that app, but it does not delete the app or factory-reset your Fire TV Stick. If you only want to remove temporary files, start with Clear Cache instead.
What happens when you clear app data?
Clear Data is an app-specific reset. Amazon says clearing an app’s cache and data “resets the app without deleting it.” You can still open the app afterward, but it may ask you to sign in or configure it again. The exact effect on saved downloads, preferences, and other content depends on the app; Amazon’s general Fire TV instructions do not provide a universal list of what each app removes.
If a particular app’s saved content matters, check that app’s own help before clearing its data. This setting is not a factory reset of the Fire TV Stick.
Clear Cache or Clear Data?
| Choice | What it does | When to use it | Possible follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Cache | Removes the selected app’s cached files. | Try this lighter cleanup first when troubleshooting an app or addressing storage concerns. | Typically less setup than a data reset; effects can vary by app. |
| Clear Data | Resets the selected app’s data without deleting the app. | Use when the app is still misbehaving or Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance recommends it. | You may need to sign in or configure the app again. Check its own guidance if saved content matters. |
| Auto Offload | On eligible devices, automatically offloads unused apps and retains login information and settings preferences for redownload. | Consider it if you want Fire TV to manage storage while preserving that information. | Availability depends on the device and profile; it is not the same as clearing cache or data. |
Amazon also says Fire TV may automatically clear an unused app’s cache when it has not been used for more than 30 days and the device is low on storage. This behavior concerns cache, not a manual Clear Data action.

How to clear data on a Fire Stick
- From the Fire TV menu, open Settings.
- Select Applications.
- Open Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the app you want to troubleshoot.
- Choose Clear Cache for a cache-only cleanup, or choose Clear Data to reset that app.
To clear caches across apps, Amazon provides a Clear all Application Caches option. That clears caches; use the selected app’s menu when you specifically need to clear its data. Menu names and layouts can vary by Fire TV generation and software experience.
When should you clear an app’s data?
The app crashes, will not open, or is unresponsive
Restart the Fire TV first. If the same app still has trouble, try clearing its cache and, if needed, its data. Amazon also lists reinstalling the app and checking for a Fire TV system update as troubleshooting steps.

You see a low-storage message
Amazon recommends clearing app cache or data for low-storage messages. Start with cache if you do not need a fuller app reset. On eligible devices, Auto Offload may also manage storage by offloading apps that have not been used for 60 days; Amazon says login information and settings preferences are retained for redownload. The feature is not available on every device or profile.
Prime Video playback is failing
Amazon’s Prime Video guidance includes clearing the app’s cache and data, checking for a Fire TV system update, and restarting both the Fire TV and the modem or router. For HD or UHD playback, it also recommends checking HDCP compatibility when the display connection is relevant.

What to try if clearing data does not help
- Restart the Fire TV Stick and try the app again.
- Check for a Fire TV system update.
- Reinstall the app if the problem persists.
- For streaming or network problems, restart the modem or router. For HD or UHD playback, check the display chain’s HDCP compatibility where applicable.
These are troubleshooting options, not a reason to clear data across every app. Reset only the app that is causing trouble unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise.
