The MSI Z590-A PRO is a capable choice for a compatible LGA1200 system if you want DDR4, multiple SSD and SATA connections, 2.5Gbps wired networking, and extensive USB connectivity. Its biggest caveat is processor dependence: the top M.2 slot and PCIe 4.0 support for the primary graphics slot require an 11th Gen Intel CPU. Whether it is a good buy today also depends on the board’s current price, condition, and the cost of alternatives for your existing platform.
Who the MSI Z590-A PRO suits
This ATX motherboard uses Intel’s Z590 chipset and LGA1200 socket. MSI lists support for compatible 10th and 11th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold, and Celeron processors. Compatibility should be checked for the exact processor model, not inferred from its family name. MSI’s user guide says, “Please go to intel.com for compatibility information.” MSI’s specification page and user guide provide the board details and compatibility guidance.
- A good fit: a build or upgrade using a supported LGA1200 CPU, DDR4 memory, and several storage devices.
- Check carefully: whether your CPU enables the features you intend to use, especially M.2_1 and PCIe 4.0 for the primary x16 slot.
- Look elsewhere: if you need a different CPU socket or memory platform, or require onboard Wi-Fi; MSI’s listed specifications identify wired LAN but do not list Wi-Fi for this model.
What the board provides
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or reliability measurements. MSI lists an ATX board with four DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 128 GB, three M.2 Key M slots, six SATA 6Gb/s ports, Intel I225-V 2.5Gbps LAN, and 7.1-channel audio. The rear I/O includes USB 3.2 ports, including a Type-C port rated up to 20Gbps, and a Flash BIOS button. See the official specifications and 2023 datasheet.
Which CPU-dependent features matter?
Processor compatibility
The LGA1200 socket alone does not guarantee support for every processor that physically fits. MSI lists compatible 10th and 11th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold, and Celeron families and directs users to Intel for compatibility information. Verify the exact CPU model before buying or installing the board.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Primary M.2 and graphics slots
The CPU-connected M.2_1 slot supports PCIe 4.0 x4, but is available only with an 11th Gen Intel CPU. With a 10th Gen CPU, do not count on that slot for storage. The primary CPU-connected PCIe x16 slot supports PCIe 4.0 with an 11th Gen CPU and PCIe 3.0 with a 10th Gen CPU.
The other x16-length slot is chipset-connected and supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4; two additional expansion slots are PCIe 3.0 x1. The physical length of the secondary x16 slot therefore does not mean it has the same connection as the primary slot.

Memory speed
MSI specifies four DDR4 slots and up to 128 GB. Its listed base memory support reaches up to 2933 MHz for 10th Gen CPUs and up to 3200 MHz for 11th Gen CPUs in the stated configurations. The 2023 datasheet advertises up to DDR4-5333 under overclocking; that is a maximum specification dependent on DIMM count and rank, not a guarantee that every CPU and memory kit will run stably at that speed. Check MSI’s memory specifications and supported-memory guidance when selecting a kit.

How many M.2 and SATA drives can it use?
The board has three M.2 slots and six SATA ports, but the connections are not interchangeable in capability, and some drive configurations share resources. M.2_1 is the CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x4 slot available only with 11th Gen CPUs. M.2_2 and M.2_3 connect through the Z590 chipset and support up to PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA, subject to the manual’s configuration notes.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
MSI notes that installing certain SATA M.2 drives or an SSD in M.2_3 disables specified SATA ports. Before populating all connectors, consult the storage configuration table in the user guide and match the affected port to your planned drives. This matters if you need all six SATA connections alongside M.2 storage.
Networking, USB and display connections
For wired networking, the board has an Intel I225-V 2.5Gbps LAN controller. That gives it a faster-than-gigabit wired-network specification, but actual transfer rates depend on the rest of the network. MSI also lists multiple USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 connections, including a rear USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port. The Flash BIOS button is shown in MSI’s rear-I/O diagram.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs are specified for up to 4K at 60Hz, but they work only when the installed processor has integrated graphics. A CPU without integrated graphics will not produce an image through the motherboard’s video connectors; use a compatible graphics card instead.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
MSI’s specifications, manual, product overview, and 2023 datasheet establish the board’s listed features and configuration limits. They do not establish independent benchmark performance, measured temperatures, reliability rates, or present-day retail and resale value. Treat the Z590-A PRO’s capabilities above as documented specifications rather than proof that it outperforms another board or offers the best value.
Best Value

How to decide whether it is a good buy
- Confirm the exact CPU. Check that MSI supports your processor model, then determine whether it is 10th or 11th Gen.
- Map your storage. Decide which M.2 slots and SATA ports you need, and check the manual for port disabling in your planned configuration.
- Match memory expectations to the CPU. Choose a DDR4 kit and treat overclocked speeds as conditional rather than assured.
- Check required expansion and I/O. Account for the secondary x16 slot’s chipset connection, whether you need Wi-Fi, and whether your CPU has integrated graphics if you plan to use motherboard display outputs.
- Compare the actual deal. Consider current price, board condition, seller warranty, and the cost of other options that work with your CPU and memory. No current-price or comparative test evidence establishes a universal value winner.
On those terms, the Z590-A PRO is a sensible feature set for a compatible LGA1200 build, especially when DDR4, multiple storage connections, 2.5Gbps wired LAN, and broad USB connectivity are priorities. Its appeal depends on whether the CPU and storage layout you already have can use the features you expect.
