Yes. If other people know your password, treat it as compromised and change it immediately. A password is an authenticator only while it remains confidential; once it is shared or widely known, someone else may be able to sign in, alter account settings, or lock you out. The scenario behind this headline is unattributed: no verifiable public record identifies the user, service, date, number of people involved, or any resulting breach.
Why a known password is no longer safe
Knowing a password is enough to pass the first authentication check on many services. It does not matter whether the people who know it are trusted today. They could be phished, have a device stolen, reuse the password elsewhere, or continue accessing the account after a relationship or job changes.
NIST guidance says authenticators should not be shared and requires a verifier to force a change when there is evidence that an authenticator has been compromised. A password that is known by other people meets that practical threshold, even when no unauthorized login has yet been detected.

A 2025 ACM study of shared subscription accounts documented this kind of practical risk through participant evidence. The study provides context about shared-account behavior, not proof of a breach connected to this particular scenario.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
What to do if someone else knows your login
- Change the password from a trusted device. Use the service’s account or security settings, not a link in an unexpected email or message. Create a long, random, unique password that has never been used on another account.
- Save the new credential in a password manager. A manager can generate a different password for every service, so a compromise at one site does not provide a key to another.
- Enable multi-factor authentication immediately. CISA explains that MFA can protect an account even when its password has been compromised. Prefer a phishing-resistant method, such as a security key or a platform passkey, when the service supports it.
- End other sessions. Look for controls labelled “sign out of all devices,” “active sessions,” or similar, and revoke sessions you do not recognize. Session controls differ by service, so follow that provider’s instructions.
- Check recovery and trust settings. Confirm the recovery email address and phone number, review trusted devices, app passwords, connected applications, forwarding rules, and recent sign-in or account-activity logs. Remove anything you did not authorize.
- Secure related accounts. If the old password was reused anywhere else, change those accounts too, starting with email, financial services, cloud storage, and any account that can reset other passwords.
Choosing the right remediation
A password change, password manager, MFA method, and security key address different parts of the problem. They are complementary rather than competing fixes.
| Option | Protection against a known password | Phishing resistance | Deployment and compatibility | Recovery considerations | Unique credential per account |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New unique password | Removes the old secret from normal login | Low; it can still be entered on a fake site | Works on virtually every password-based service | Requires the service’s normal recovery process | Only if you create a different one for each account |
| Password manager | Helps replace shared or reused passwords and store random ones | Usually limited for password entry; MFA is still needed | Requires installing and protecting the manager; support varies by device | Safeguard the manager’s recovery method and emergency access | Yes, when used to generate separate passwords |
| Authenticator app or passkey | Adds a second factor or passwordless sign-in | Passkeys and other phishing-resistant methods provide the strongest protection | Availability and enrollment flows vary by service and device | Register a backup method and store recovery codes securely | Does not replace changing a password already known by others |
| Hardware security key | Adds a separate physical authenticator | Strong when the service supports a phishing-resistant standard | Requires compatible account support and carrying the key | Keep a spare key or another supported recovery method | Does not create or manage the account password |
Why “everyone already knows it” is not a reason to leave it unchanged
Changing a password does not erase evidence or guarantee that an attacker never used the old one. It does prevent future logins with that credential and limits damage when combined with session revocation and MFA. Delaying the change preserves the exact condition that makes the account vulnerable.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
CISA’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month guidance puts the risk plainly: “Every time you share or reuse a password, it chips away at your security by opening more ways with which it could be misused or stolen.” Sharing also makes it impossible to know who still has a copy, where it was stored, or whether it was exposed through another person’s device.
How to handle a service that does not offer MFA or session controls
Change the password to a unique value, secure the email account used for recovery, and monitor sign-in notifications and account activity. Remove saved credentials from shared browsers and devices. Contact the service’s support team if you cannot remove unknown sessions or change recovery details. For an account holding sensitive information, consider moving to a provider that supports MFA or passkeys when practical.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
No authoritative source identifies a specific incident matching the headline. There is no confirmed service, timeline, participant count, or reported breach to cite. The security conclusion does not depend on those missing details: NIST’s event-driven change guidance and CISA’s MFA recommendations apply whenever an authenticator is suspected to be compromised, including through sharing.
