The Logitech G316 X 98 is a wired mechanical gaming keyboard that keeps a number pad in a more compact layout, with hot-swappable switches, customizable PBT keycaps, RGB lighting, and a small display with a media knob. It may suit someone who wants a compact, customizable board and does not need every navigation key; it is less compelling if you want wireless use, a full navigation cluster, or a display that does more than basic status and controls.
What kind of keyboard is the G316 X 98?
Logitech markets the G316 X as a “98% Wired Gaming Keyboard,” while RTINGS describes it as a 96% layout. Those labels are not perfectly interchangeable. The practical distinction is that the board retains a number pad in a smaller footprint than a conventional full-size keyboard. TechRadar’s review notes that some navigation keys are missing, so check the key layout against your usual shortcuts before buying.
It is wired rather than wireless. Logitech’s Japan announcement describes a USB-A-to-USB-C cable included with its local variants, and the quick-start guide shows the keyboard’s USB-C port. That regional cable information should not be assumed for every market.
How do its switches, typing feel, and customization work?
Hot-swappable switches
Logitech says the mechanical switches are hot-swappable, which allows switch replacement without soldering. The exact switch type depends on the regional listing, so confirm what is included with the SKU you plan to buy. Logitech Japan says analog switches are unsupported: do not treat hot-swap capability as magnetic or analog-switch support.

For its listed Japanese linear-switch model, Logitech Japan specifies a 1.9 mm actuation point, 3.5 mm key travel, and 40 g operating force. Those figures apply to that Japan-market variant, not necessarily every layout or switch option.
Keycaps and sound
Logitech describes customizable PBT keycaps with standard cross-hatch stems and sells customization kits separately. That description does not establish compatibility with every third-party keycap set; verify the fit for the exact layout before ordering a kit.

Logitech advertises a gasket-mounted structure with sound-dampening layers and calls the resulting sound “thocky.” TechRadar’s reviewer also characterized the stock tactile switches as thocky, while noting they were not the quietest. Sound is subjective and will vary with the switch, typing style, and surroundings.

What do the display, knob, lighting, and software add?
The quick-start guide identifies a dot-matrix LED display, media knob, and Game Mode button. Logitech says the dial can control volume, media, brightness, and report rate. The company also advertises per-key RGB and a light bar with 30 zones.

For customization, Logitech directs users to G HUB for LIGHTSYNC lighting, macros, and KEYCONTROL. That means the keyboard’s more involved software features depend on Logitech’s software rather than being entirely managed through onboard controls.
Logitech lists a “Near-instantaneous 8 kHz report rate.” This is a manufacturer specification, not proof that every player will perceive a difference in play. Treat it as a feature to weigh alongside layout, switch feel, and the wired connection—not as a guarantee of better gameplay.

What did independent reviewers like and dislike?
TechRadar’s reviewer praised the build and typing feel, describing the board as solid yet light and reporting use for gaming, typing, and browsing. The same review found the small display of limited practical use, pointed out the missing navigation keys, and felt the feet did not provide enough tilt. The reviewer also criticized the price. These are that publication’s hands-on judgments, not universal results.

Those trade-offs make the layout especially important: the G316 X 98 keeps the number pad, but its smaller footprint comes partly from omitting some navigation keys. If those keys are central to your work or shortcuts, inspect the layout before choosing it.

Which regional details should you verify?
Logitech Japan announced a July 16, 2026 release and listed specifications for its Japanese variants. These are Japan-market details; check the exact regional model number and listing rather than assuming they apply worldwide.

Logitech Japan specifies a Japanese layout and local model numbers. The US Logitech product page listed the keyboard at $119.99 in a search result observed October 7, 2026; that is a volatile US listing price, not a universal price. Check the current price, layout, included cable, OS requirements, and warranty for your region before purchase.
Who should consider the G316 X 98?
- Consider it if you want a wired mechanical gaming keyboard with a number pad in a smaller footprint, and value hot-swappable switches, PBT customization, and extensive lighting options.
- Look elsewhere if you need wireless operation, rely on the navigation keys omitted from this compact layout, or want a particularly quiet stock keyboard.
- Check your exact variant if switch type, key layout, regional compatibility, included cable, or customization-kit fit will determine whether it works for you.
Logitech’s product page calls the keyboard “supercharged” and “game-ready”; that is promotional language. The concrete case for the G316 X 98 is its compact number-pad layout and customization, balanced against the wired connection, layout omissions, and reviewer concerns about the display and price.
