The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a strong premium Android smartwatch for Samsung Galaxy owners who will use its trail-running or diving features. It also works with supported non-Samsung Android phones, but key health and coaching functions are Galaxy-phone-only. At its U.S. launch price of $699.99, that distinction—and whether you need an outdoor-focused 47 mm watch—should decide whether it is worth buying.
What the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 offers

Samsung’s announcement lists a 1.52-inch, 498 × 498 Super AMOLED always-on display, Snapdragon Wear Elite, 2 GB of memory, 64 GB of storage, Wear OS 7, One UI 9 Watch, and dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS.

Samsung lists an 800 mAh battery, up to 60 hours of use with the always-on display enabled, and a 90-minute full charge. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of the same result for every wearer. Samsung also claims brightness up to 5,000 nits and a battery capacity 35% greater than the previous Ultra generation; the brightness comparison is Samsung’s claim, not an independently established market-first finding. Does it work with a non-Samsung Android phone?
Yes, provided the phone meets compatibility requirements—but compatibility does not mean every feature is available. Samsung’s U.S. product information lists Android 13.0 or later, more than 1.5 GB of memory, and a phone that supports Google Mobile Services. Samsung warns that compatible devices can vary by market, carrier, and brand. Its Australia support guidance likewise lists Android 13 or later and at least 1.5 GB of RAM, while noting that some models and tablets are unsupported and that iOS is not supported for these models. Check the guidance for your country and your specific handset before buying. Samsung Australia’s compatibility table.

Samsung’s U.S. product announcement and its Galaxy feature guidance describe the requirements.

Is it worth buying for outdoor sports?
The Ultra2’s strongest case is its outdoor and demanding-exercise feature set. Samsung says its Trail Run mode is exclusive to the Ultra2 and provides elevation, climbing progress, and cumulative ascent and descent. Its dive data includes depth, dive time, and water temperature. The watch also lists 10ATM, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H, and EN13319 credentials. These are manufacturer-listed ratings and certifications, not a blanket guarantee of suitability for every water sport, depth, or environment; check Samsung’s conditions for the activity you have in mind. What to expect from battery life and charging
Samsung’s stated maximum is up to 60 hours with always-on display enabled, with a 90-minute full charge. In contrast, Android Central reviewer Nicholas Sutrich said his review unit barely got through two days and took around two hours to charge from empty. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a population-wide test result, but it is a useful reason to plan around your own settings and routine rather than treating the advertised maximum as guaranteed. Android Central’s review.
Sutrich praised the display, performance, multitasking, apps, and workout additions, including trail running and diving. He criticized battery life, charging speed, run pacing, and Galaxy-phone restrictions. The review therefore supports a qualified verdict: the hardware and feature set are compelling, but the premium does not remove practical compromises. Read the review.
Who should buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?
| Buyer profile | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy phone owner who will use trail-running or diving tools | Strongest fit | Can access the Galaxy-dependent features and make use of the Ultra2’s outdoor emphasis. |
| Non-Samsung Android owner | Conditional | Basic compatibility is possible, but Running Coach, certain personalized health insights, and specified Samsung Health Monitor features require a compatible Galaxy phone. |
| Buyer focused on everyday wellness and ordinary workouts | Consider a less expensive option | The 47 mm outdoor-oriented watch and its premium price may be more than this use case requires; TechRadar identifies the Galaxy Watch9 as a less expensive Samsung alternative. |
| Buyer prioritizing long wilderness outings | Compare specialist options | TechRadar names the Garmin Fenix 8 as an alternative for wilderness exploration; compare current models and prices against your activity needs. |
Before choosing, weigh your phone’s feature eligibility, the outdoor functions you will actually use, comfort with a 47 mm case, and whether the reviewer-reported charging experience works with your routine. At $699.99 in the U.S. at launch, this is easiest to recommend when its distinctive activities and Galaxy integration matter to you—not simply because you want a premium Android watch.
