If you can wait and Apple Intelligence matters to you, holding off is reasonable: reporting as of July 2026 points to a possible first-half 2027 entry-level iPad refresh with a newer chip. Apple has not announced that model, its launch date, its specifications, or its price. If you need a tablet now and the current model meets your needs, Apple lists the iPad (A16), with confirmed specifications and iPadOS 26 compatibility.
What you can buy now: iPad (A16)
Apple identifies the iPad (A16) as a model introduced in 2025. Its official specifications include an A16 chip, a 10.86-inch viewable display diagonal, and three storage options: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Apple Pencil compatibility
The iPad (A16) supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The first-generation Pencil needs a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging, so it is not a direct plug-in option. If note-taking or drawing is part of your decision, account for that adapter requirement when comparing accessories.
Why waiting could matter
The clearest potential reason to wait is Apple Intelligence. A May 2026 MacRumors report says the current base iPad’s A16 chip does not support Apple Intelligence; Apple’s technical-specification page does not itself make an Apple Intelligence compatibility claim. If access to those features is important, the current model may not be the right choice.

A July 16, 2026 MacRumors report summarizing Mark Gurman’s reporting said refreshed entry-level iPad, Air, and Pro models were expected in the first half of 2027. It described conflicting chip reports for the entry-level iPad: Gurman had said A18, while Macworld’s Filipe Espósito reported A19. MacRumors said either chip would enable Apple Intelligence. These are reports about an unreleased product, not specifications confirmed by Apple.
An earlier May 1, 2026 MacRumors timing report said a successor was not expected during the fiscal quarter ending June 27, 2026, while leaving a later 2026 launch possible at that time. The July report’s first-half-2027 expectation is later reporting; neither forecast is an Apple commitment.

What remains unknown about the next model
Apple has not announced a successor in the sources available as of October 12, 2026. Do not treat the reported launch window or chip as settled, and there is no confirmed next-model price to compare with the current iPad. The reports also do not establish a model name, RAM amount, design change, or other final specifications. In particular, a future US starting price should not be inferred from a historical price quoted for the current model.

Choose the current model if your purchase is time-sensitive, its documented capabilities cover your intended use, and Apple Intelligence is not a requirement. Confirm the storage configuration you want and check the current local price rather than relying on an old launch or report-era figure.

Wait if Apple Intelligence is a priority and you can defer
Waiting is the more defensible option if you specifically want Apple Intelligence and can manage without a new tablet until the successor is announced and available. Treat the first-half-2027 timing and A18/A19 possibilities as forecasts; revisit the decision when Apple confirms the device and its price.

How to make the decision without betting on a rumor
- Decide whether you need the tablet before the reported window. If waiting would cost you months of useful work or study, that practical cost matters more than an unconfirmed upgrade.
- Check whether the current model meets your needs. Compare its A16 chip, 128GB/256GB/512GB storage choices, and accessory compatibility with the tasks you actually plan to do.
- Set your Apple Intelligence requirement. The current model’s lack of support is reported by MacRumors; possible support in the successor depends on unconfirmed hardware.
- Compare real prices only when you are ready to buy. Check Apple or local retailers for the current iPad’s live price, and wait for an official successor price rather than projecting one.
- Reassess when Apple makes an announcement. Compare confirmed specifications, availability, and price against the cost of continuing to wait.
