Yes—but a boxed Nintendo Switch 2 game does not always contain the game itself. Nintendo supports standard game cards and game-key cards: a game-key card requires an internet download before first play, then must remain inserted whenever you play. If you want the game data on the card, check the format on the specific box or listing before buying.
What “physical” means on Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 has two card formats. A standard game card is distinct from a game-key card; packaging and official listings identify the format. A game-key card contains a key used to download the game data, not the full game. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview and its game-card instructions explain the distinction.
Standard game cards
If your priority is a card that contains the game data, look for a standard game card rather than assuming every boxed release qualifies. Title-specific updates or other requirements may still apply; check the individual game’s packaging and listing.
Game-key cards
A game-key card is a physical item, but it is not a complete copy of the game on the card. You need an internet connection and enough free storage to download the game before playing for the first time. Nintendo says the required space appears on the packaging and on the Nintendo Store or eShop listing. After downloading, you can play offline, but the game-key card must be inserted to start the game.

When buying physical makes sense
- You want the game data on the card: Choose a release identified as a standard game card, not a game-key card.
- You want a tangible item you can move between consoles: Either card format can serve that purpose, but a game-key card still needs its initial download and must be inserted to play.
- You are comfortable downloading the game but prefer a card: A game-key card may suit you, provided you have the required storage and keep the card.
A physical card is also a transferable object in a way a digital purchase is not, but that alone does not establish what a particular used copy will sell for or what resale rules apply where you live. Nintendo’s September 2026 user agreement recognizes physical media sold through retailers and says that buying or using software does not transfer Nintendo’s intellectual-property rights. It does not set a universal resale rule or guarantee a resale value.

Check storage and saves before you buy
Check the download size for a game-key card
Look at the packaging or the Nintendo Store/eShop page for the title-specific required download space. Software data can be stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Extra storage can help when a download will not fit, but buying physical games does not by itself mean you need a microSD Express card. Keep save data separate from the card
Game progress is stored in the console’s system memory whether you play from a card or use downloaded software. Moving a game card to another console does not move your progress with it. To continue on a different console, transfer save data or use Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves where supported.

A quick decision rule
- Decide whether your priority is game data on the card, a physical item to move between consoles, or simply access to the game.
- Check the individual release’s packaging or official listing to distinguish a standard game card from a game-key card.
- If it is a game-key card, confirm you can download the listed amount and remember that the card must remain inserted to play.
- If you plan to use another console, arrange save-data transfer or supported cloud backup separately from moving the card.
