In the US, Apple listed the iPhone 17 from $899 and the iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 at the time of comparison—a $300 difference between their displayed starting prices. The Pro’s clearest advantages on paper are its dedicated telephoto camera, variable-aperture main camera, higher-tier A20 Pro chip, and longer Apple-rated video-playback time. The iPhone 17 keeps the same 6.3-inch display size class and costs less at its listed starting configuration.

| Display size | 6.3 inches | 6.3 inches |
| Chip | A19 | A20 Pro |
| Rear camera system | Dual 48MP Fusion system | 48MP Pro Fusion system with Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras; Main camera has variable aperture |

Specifications are from Apple’s iPhone comparison page, except the US starting prices, which are from its US buying page. Apple’s battery figures are manufacturer-rated video playback, not independently measured mixed-use battery life. The IP68 figure is a rating under a stated laboratory condition, not a guarantee against water damage in every situation.
How much more does iPhone 18 Pro cost?
Apple’s US buying page listed the iPhone 17 from $899 and iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 at the time of comparison, making the displayed starting-price gap $300. These are starting prices, not a like-for-like comparison of identical storage capacities. The final difference can vary with storage, market, date, trade-in, carrier offer, and promotion. Check the exact configuration and local price before buying; US prices should not be carried over to Canada or another country.
What does iPhone 18 Pro add?
A more flexible rear camera system
The iPhone 17 has a dual 48MP Fusion camera system. Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro with a 48MP Pro Fusion system comprising Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras. Its Main camera also has variable aperture and Pro controls. The dedicated telephoto camera is the most straightforward hardware distinction for someone who wants more framing options without moving closer to a subject.

Apple describes the variable-aperture Main camera as intended to improve low-light photos and video and provide greater depth of field. That is Apple’s product description, not an independent camera-test result. See Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro overview for its feature description.
A higher-tier chip and cooling design
Apple lists the A20 Pro in iPhone 18 Pro and the A19 in iPhone 17. The Pro line also advertises vapor cooling and improved sustained performance. These are manufacturer feature and performance claims; the available specifications do not establish an independent benchmark advantage or quantify real-world gains for particular apps.

Longer stated video playback
Apple’s comparison lists up to 36 hours of video playback for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 30 hours for iPhone 17. Treat these as Apple’s stated playback figures, not a prediction of how long either phone will last during your own mix of calls, streaming, camera use, and standby time.

Choose iPhone 17 if value is the priority
- You want the lower Apple US listed starting price.
- A dual-camera system meets your needs, and you do not need a dedicated telephoto camera or Pro camera controls.
- You do not place a premium on the Pro model’s higher-tier chip and cooling features.
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if its camera or performance features matter
- You want a dedicated Telephoto camera, variable-aperture Main camera, or Pro controls.
- You value the A20 Pro and vapor-cooling design, while recognizing that Apple’s performance claims are not independent test results.
- Apple’s higher stated video-playback figure is useful to you, with the understanding that it is not a mixed-use battery-life measurement.
This is a decision based on Apple’s listed specifications and US starting prices, not hands-on testing. Before placing an order, compare the storage tier you actually want and the current price, trade-in, carrier offer, warranty, and device condition in your market.

Does either phone have a durability advantage?
Apple lists the same IP68 rating for both models: up to 6 meters for 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. Apple Support states that rating for iPhone 18 Pro in its technical specifications. The rating describes a controlled test condition; it does not mean water damage is covered or that resistance is assured in all circumstances.
