ExpressVPN is a polished, feature-rich VPN with broad device support and a substantial record of published audits, but its speed is not consistent across protocols and platforms, and its privacy assurances deserve a closer look than a feature checklist. Independent reviewers reach different conclusions about performance and company practices, so the best fit depends on your device, threat model and willingness to pay—not on a single headline speed.
Is ExpressVPN worth it?
It may be worth considering if you want an easy-to-use service with apps for many devices, a choice of protocols and independent reviews of specific products and privacy commitments. Its main drawbacks are that speed results vary sharply by setup, the service does not support port forwarding according to RTINGS, and its current subscription price and renewal cost need to be checked at checkout.
TechRadar gave ExpressVPN an overall score of 82/100 in its 2026 review. It described the updated pricing structure as more affordable while still relatively expensive compared with highly rated rivals, and judged the top Pro plan to offer limited value over Basic and Advanced. RTINGS, in a review marked updated July 13, 2026, reported slow speeds and mediocre latency in its collected data. Those assessments use different methods; neither is a guarantee of what you will experience on your own connection.

ExpressVPN pros and cons
- Pros: Vendor-described RAM-only servers, a proprietary Lightway protocol, a kill switch and leak protection; apps and supported connections across a range of devices; and published audits covering both privacy commitments and individual products.
- Cons: Results depend on protocol and platform; Lightway Turbo’s high reported speeds came from Windows-only testing and have compatibility caveats; the company’s data and ownership practices drew criticism from RTINGS; and RTINGS says port forwarding is unavailable.
How fast is ExpressVPN?
There is no single speed figure that describes the service. In TechRadar’s 2026 tests, results differed by protocol and route. The figures below are that publication’s measured download speeds, not a promise of your throughput. Local and Dublin-to-US results also represent different routes.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.
- 【Highly Secure VPN】Supports up to 20× LAN-to-LAN IPsec, 16× OpenVPN, 16× L2TP, and 16× PPTP VPN connections.
- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
| Protocol in TechRadar’s test | Local download | Dublin-to-US download |
|---|---|---|
| Lightway Turbo | 1,177 Mbps | 1,117 Mbps |
| Regular Lightway | 428 Mbps | 265 Mbps |
| WireGuard | 967 Mbps | 699 Mbps |
TechRadar said Lightway Turbo was available only in the Windows app during its testing. It cautioned that Turbo might not work with every website, app or game, and reported that it took a long time to establish a server connection. The Turbo results therefore should not be generalized to other operating systems or to every use case.
RTINGS’ July 13, 2026 review reached a more critical conclusion, describing its collected speed data as slow and latency as mediocre. Because test conditions and methods differ, the useful takeaway is to treat both outlets’ results as evidence about their own setups—not as a universal ranking. If performance matters, check that your chosen app supports the protocol you want and test it on the routes and services you actually use.
What privacy protections does ExpressVPN offer?
ExpressVPN describes TrustedServer as RAM-only infrastructure and says data is removed when a server reboots. Its features page also describes AES-256 encryption, its Lightway protocol, a kill switch, leak protection and private DNS, plus automatic obfuscation on supported platforms. These are the company’s descriptions of its service; a feature description alone is not independent proof that every aspect works as intended.

The company says it has commissioned independent audits since 2018. Its published audit program covers different scopes, including Lightway, TrustedServer, desktop and mobile apps, browser extensions, Aircove, build verification and no-logs or privacy commitments. The Trust Center lists a KPMG privacy-commitment audit from June 2025 and a Cure53 security and architecture review of ExpressKeys from March 2026, among other assessments. ExpressVPN also says it and Kape Group received ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 18295-1/-2 certifications in 2025, and that it publishes transparency reports twice a year.
An audit or certification applies to a defined scope and time; it is not a guarantee of perfect privacy or a finding about every future version of a product. RTINGS reported strong technical IP and DNS protection and a functional kill switch in its assessment, while also criticizing marketing and analytics data collection and corporate ownership. Those questions are related to trust but distinct: technical protection tests address how controls behave, while policy and governance concerns address what information may be collected and who controls the company.
Can ExpressVPN be traced?
A VPN can hide your public IP address from websites and route your traffic through its servers, but it cannot make you untraceable. ExpressVPN’s own FAQ says a VPN prevents tracking by IP address on its own, while other tracking methods require additional steps. It does not block cookies or prevent browser fingerprinting. Websites may still recognize an account you sign into, and browser or device signals can identify or distinguish you independently of your IP address.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
So, ExpressVPN can reduce exposure of your IP address and protect the VPN connection, but it is not a substitute for managing cookies, account sign-ins, browser privacy settings or other identifying information. Do not interpret “no-logs” claims or encryption as anonymity from every party or tracking method.

ExpressVPN reported that it operates servers in 113 countries and allows up to 14 supported devices to connect simultaneously. You can install the service on more devices than that, but the simultaneous-connection cap still applies. These are vendor-reported figures, and “supported devices” does not mean every device type has the same app features or protocol choices.

For a current named home-router option, ExpressVPN announced Fortify (GL-MT6000), made with GL.iNet and based on its router platform. A router can route traffic for devices that cannot run a VPN app themselves, but verify compatibility and the service requirements for your intended setup before buying. ExpressVPN’s launch announcement gave a $199.99 MSRP and said availability through GL.iNet began September 16, 2026; it said Amazon availability would follow shortly after launch. That announcement does not establish current regional pricing or whether an Amazon listing is now in stock.

Aircove and Aircove Go are retired and will not receive additional production units. Existing devices are not immediately unusable, but their published security-update horizons differ:
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
| Existing router | Published software security-update horizon |
|---|---|
| Aircove AX1800 | Through the end of 2027 |
| Aircove Go AXG1800 | Through the end of 2028 |
ExpressVPN says existing units can continue to function after those dates, but firmware updates will stop. That lifecycle matters if you are choosing between using an older router you already own and buying a currently supported product.
Who should choose ExpressVPN?
- Consider it if you value broad app support, want the option to connect up to 14 supported devices at once, and find its platform-specific features useful.
- Compare alternatives if sustained speed, low latency, port forwarding or the lowest renewal cost is central to your decision. Reviewers’ results differ, and the subscription figures need to be verified at checkout.
- Look beyond VPN marketing if your main concern is being untraceable. A VPN masks an IP address, but cookies, browser fingerprinting and logged-in accounts can still identify you.
Overall, ExpressVPN is a capable, feature-rich service with meaningful independent scrutiny, but its strongest speed claims are narrow to particular test conditions and its privacy record is not settled by audits alone. Decide based on your device and use case, examine the plan renewal terms, and weigh technical safeguards alongside the company-practice concerns raised by RTINGS.
