For most buyers, waiting specifically for semiconductor prices to fall is a weak strategy in 2026. Gartner forecasts steep increases in memory costs and expects those pressures to feed into higher PC and smartphone prices. Buy now if you need a device, find a verified discount, or depend on predictable availability. Wait only for an optional purchase when you can tolerate uncertain timing—particularly if you are targeting storage-heavy products that could benefit from looser NAND supply after 2027.
The short answer: need, deal quality and timing matter more than a chip-price prediction
Semiconductor forecasts describe what manufacturers may pay for components, not the exact shelf price of a particular laptop, phone, tablet or game console. Retail prices also reflect exchange rates, product launches, inventory, retailer promotions, memory configurations, warranty costs and regional taxes. A falling contract price can take months to reach a finished product, while a shortage can raise prices immediately on the configurations that are actually in stock.
Use the forecast as a risk signal rather than a promise. If your current device is failing, your work depends on an upgrade, or a model is available at a genuinely low price, buying now limits the risk of a later increase. If the purchase is discretionary and your current equipment is adequate, waiting can make sense—but set a review date and a target price instead of waiting indefinitely for a broad market crash.

| Forecast | Component or category | Expected change | Time frame and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gartner | Combined DRAM and SSD prices | 130% increase | Estimated increase by the end of 2026 |
| Gartner | PC prices | 17% increase | Estimated versus 2025 prices |
| Gartner | Smartphone prices | 13% increase | Estimated versus 2025 prices |
| Gartner | DRAM | 125% increase | Estimated annual-price increase during 2026 |
| Gartner | NAND flash | 234% increase | Estimated annual-price increase during 2026 |
| TrendForce | Conventional DRAM contract prices | 13–18% increase | Forecast quarter over quarter for the third quarter of 2026 |
| TrendForce | NAND Flash contract prices | 10–15% increase | Forecast quarter over quarter for the third quarter of 2026 |
These are not interchangeable numbers. Gartner’s annual and category estimates describe a broad 2026 trajectory, while TrendForce’s figures cover one quarter of contract negotiations for conventional memory. Neither guarantees that every retailer will raise every model by the same percentage.
Gartner attributes the environment to high demand for AI processing, data-center networking and power, as well as memory-price inflation. Senior Principal Analyst Rajeev Rajput said: “Amid high demand for AI processing, data center networking and power, and memory price inflation (memflation), the semiconductor industry is projected to achieve a third consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2026.”
Why memory prices can affect the device you want
DRAM affects active multitasking
DRAM is the fast working memory used while a computer or phone runs applications. A laptop with more RAM can keep more browser tabs, documents and creative tools active without moving data to slower storage. When DRAM costs rise, manufacturers may raise prices, reduce standard memory, or reserve higher capacities for premium models. Soldered laptop memory can make a later upgrade impossible, so the cost of choosing the right capacity today matters more than a small headline discount.

NAND flash affects storage
NAND flash is the nonvolatile memory used in SSDs, phones and other storage devices. Storage-heavy products have greater exposure to NAND pricing, but the retail effect is uneven. A manufacturer might hold a model’s price steady, switch to a different supplier, reduce the included capacity, or run a promotion to clear inventory. Check the exact capacity and drive type rather than assuming two products with the same model family have identical storage.

Other components can dominate the final price
A device’s processor, graphics chip, display, battery, camera system, modem, chassis and software support can matter as much as memory. A new generation may launch at a higher price even if memory costs stabilize. Conversely, a retailer clearing last-generation stock can create a large saving while component costs are rising. Semiconductor inflation therefore raises the odds of higher prices, but it does not eliminate normal product-cycle discounts.
When buying now is the safer choice
You need the device for work, school or accessibility
Downtime has a real cost. If a failing laptop threatens deadlines, a phone no longer receives security updates, or a required application will not run, waiting for a theoretical lower price can cost more than the forecast increase. Choose a configuration that meets your needs for several years instead of buying the cheapest available unit and replacing it early.
You found a verifiable discount
Judge a deal against the product’s recent selling prices, not an inflated “regular” price. Confirm that the listing is for the intended processor, RAM, storage, display and regional model. Check return terms, warranty coverage, seller identity and whether the discount requires a short-lived coupon or membership. A real discount can outweigh the possibility of a later component-price decline.
Availability is already limited
Shortages often remove the configuration you want before they produce a uniform price increase. If only one reputable seller has the correct keyboard layout, storage size or carrier compatibility, waiting may leave you with an inferior substitute. Record the current stock and price so you can recognize whether a later offer is actually better.

You can lock in support life
Buying a current-generation device starts its security-update and warranty clock sooner, but it also avoids purchasing an older model whose support period is already partly consumed. Compare the manufacturer’s stated support duration and the device’s release date. A modestly cheaper older model is a poor bargain if it will need replacement sooner.
When waiting can make sense
The purchase is optional
If your current device is reliable, supported and fast enough, waiting preserves cash and flexibility. Set a personal deadline—such as the next major product-refresh window or a specific month—and reassess prices then. Do not treat “wait” as an open-ended plan.
You are targeting NAND-heavy storage
TrendForce expects NAND supply to loosen in the second half of 2027. That could improve pricing or capacity options for SSDs and storage-heavy devices, although the timing and size of any retail benefit are uncertain. Waiting until that period is more defensible for an extra SSD or high-capacity upgrade than for a device you urgently need.
You can accept configuration changes
Waiting may work if you are willing to buy a different brand, capacity, color, processor generation or retailer. If your requirements are rigid—such as a specific port layout, enterprise image, cellular band or accessibility feature—the risk of losing the exact model can outweigh a possible saving.

You are timing a known refresh
A scheduled product refresh can make the outgoing model cheaper or provide a substantial performance gain at the same price. Verify the manufacturer’s announcement and actual retail availability; rumors and launch-date speculation are not a price guarantee. Keep a backup option in case the new model launches above your budget.
DRAM versus NAND: what the supply outlook means
The supply outlook is not identical for both memory types. TrendForce expects NAND supply conditions to loosen in the second half of 2027. DRAM, however, is expected to remain structurally tight, and major new capacity is not expected to contribute until 2028. A buyer waiting for all memory prices to normalize could therefore wait longer than a buyer focused on storage alone.
| If your priority is… | Most exposed component | How to interpret the outlook | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| More laptop or desktop RAM | DRAM | Structural tightness may persist; major capacity is not expected until 2028 | Buy the required capacity when needed; avoid assuming a near-term drop |
| A larger SSD | NAND flash | Supply may loosen in the second half of 2027 | Wait if optional, or buy a smaller adequate drive and expand later if the device supports it |
| A new phone | DRAM, NAND and other components | Gartner estimates smartphone prices 13% higher than 2025 | Compare current-generation deals and support life rather than timing chips alone |
| A complete PC | Multiple components | Gartner estimates PC prices 17% higher than 2025 | Prioritize verified pricing, warranty and the exact configuration |
A practical decision framework
- Rate urgency. Mark the purchase as urgent if failure, incompatibility or lost productivity is likely within six months. Mark it optional only when your existing device remains reliable and supported.
- Define the minimum acceptable specification. Write down RAM, storage, processor class, screen size, ports, wireless standards, operating system and support requirements. This prevents a “deal” from quietly reducing capacity.
- Check genuine price history. Compare several recent prices for the exact model and configuration. A one-day sale is meaningful only if it is below the product’s normal range after shipping, taxes and required accessories.
- Estimate component exposure. Storage-heavy products are more sensitive to NAND conditions; systems with unusually high RAM requirements are more exposed to DRAM. Treat this as a risk indicator, not a precise retail calculation.
- Check refresh and support timing. Identify whether a replacement generation is actually announced, when it ships, and how long the current model will receive security updates. A lower price is not useful if support ends soon.
- Set a wait trigger. If waiting, choose a date or condition such as a verified price below your target, a confirmed refresh, or improved availability. Revisit the decision when that trigger occurs.
- Protect the purchase. Use a seller with clear returns, confirm warranty geography, save the listing details, and test the device during the return window.
Examples by product category
Laptops
Buy now when your current laptop is unreliable or when a current-generation laptop with the required RAM and SSD is substantially below its recent price. Pay attention to soldered memory, because a cheaper base model may not be upgradeable. If you can wait, compare the price of a new refresh with discounted outgoing models rather than waiting solely for DRAM costs to fall.
Recommended Free Tools
Smartphones
Phone pricing depends on memory, displays, cameras, modems, carrier agreements and software support. A supported phone with a healthy battery can justify waiting for a refresh or promotion. If security support is ending or the battery is failing, buy a model with a long stated update period and enough storage for your expected ownership term.

Desktops and workstations
Desktop buyers can sometimes add RAM or storage later, making a carefully chosen base system more flexible. Verify that the motherboard has accessible slots, that the power supply can handle upgrades, and that adding components will not void support. For professional workloads, the cost of lost time from insufficient memory can exceed a possible future discount.
Standalone SSDs and storage upgrades
Optional storage is the clearest case for waiting because you can keep using the existing device. Maintain backups and buy when capacity, endurance and warranty meet your needs at a verified price. Do not postpone a replacement drive if the current drive is showing errors; data recovery and downtime can cost more than the hardware.
Pitfalls that make “wait” or “buy now” decisions go wrong
- Confusing forecasts with guarantees: Component estimates do not predict the price of every model or retailer.
- Comparing different configurations: A lower price may hide less RAM, a smaller SSD, a weaker processor or a different regional model.
- Ignoring total cost: Include tax, shipping, accessories, subscription requirements and extended warranty costs.
- Waiting past the return window for testing: Test ports, battery behavior, display defects, thermals and storage health immediately.
- Buying old stock without checking support: Confirm the release date and update policy before accepting a discount.
- Assuming a later upgrade is possible: Many thin laptops and phones have soldered or sealed components.
- Using a single seller’s “list price” as history: Track several reputable sellers and the actual checkout price.
Bottom line for 2026 buyers
Current evidence favors buying when you have a real need or a verified bargain, rather than waiting for semiconductor prices to fall across the board. Gartner’s 2026 estimates point to substantial DRAM, NAND, PC and smartphone price pressure, while TrendForce sees further quarter-over-quarter memory increases in the third quarter. NAND supply may loosen in the second half of 2027, but DRAM tightness could persist until major new capacity arrives in 2028. Make the decision at the product level: compare urgency, exact specifications, price history, support life, warranty and local availability.
