Buy DLC for achievements only when you also want the content. If one expansion contains the achievements you need, buying that expansion is usually safer than purchasing a bundle. A season pass makes sense when several included expansions interest you, the bundle discount is meaningful, and you accept paying before some content exists. If your only goal is changing a profile percentage to 100%, wait for reviews and a sale, then verify exactly which achievements are locked behind which DLC.
Steam treats downloadable content as part of the game once you own it, but each publisher decides the achievement count, DLC gating, prices and release schedule for its title. There is no universal Steam rule that makes every DLC necessary for a game’s base completion or that guarantees a season pass is the cheapest route.
What DLC and a season pass actually buy
DLC is additional game content
Steam supports free and paid downloadable content. Depending on the game, DLC can add an expansion campaign, maps, levels, characters, missions, equipment or other features. After you purchase it, Steam treats that content as an integral part of the game, although it may remain listed separately in your library’s DLC panel.

A season pass is a bundle, often with future content
A season pass combines current and future DLC in one transaction. Steam’s documentation says customers receive access as each included DLC is released and that publishers commit to an expected release timing. In practical terms, you are paying for a package whose contents may not all be playable today. The pass can save money, but it also transfers release, quality and scheduling uncertainty to you.
A pass is not automatically a license for every item a publisher may ever release. Read the pass description for the named expansions, exclusions, platform restrictions and release status. Cosmetic microtransactions, later passes and unrelated add-ons may remain outside it.
Define which “100%” you mean
Before spending, choose one of two different goals:
- Base-game completion: earn every achievement attached to the original game release.
- All-content completion: earn the base achievements plus every achievement added by expansions and other downloadable content.
You can often finish the first goal without buying DLC, even when the second is impossible without it. Some games present DLC achievements in the same overall achievement area; others separate them by expansion. Steam’s completion displays and the way a title counts downloadable achievements are not governed by one universal formula, so do not assume that a visible 100% target includes, or excludes, every add-on.
Open the game’s current achievement list and identify the entries that mention a DLC location, character or mission. Then open the DLC listing and match each achievement group to the required product. A higher profile percentage is a cosmetic goal; the purchase should still provide play time you value.

How to check whether DLC is required
- Open your Library. Select the game on Steam’s desktop client or web library view.
- Find the DLC section. Steam Support directs users to the game’s Library page and its DLC section to see downloadable content you own and content available for purchase.
- Open the store’s DLC list. Record each expansion’s name, price, release status and description. Note whether an item is free, already released, or listed as coming later.
- Inspect the achievement list. Look for a separate DLC grouping or achievement names that reference an expansion. Do not rely on a store thumbnail or a season-pass headline alone.
- Check ownership requirements. Read the game’s notes for edition requirements, regional availability, multiplayer requirements and whether the DLC requires a particular base-game version.
- Confirm the current price. Compare the individual expansion you want with the pass and with the publisher’s normal sale pricing. Prices and discounts can change.
If the store page does not clearly identify which achievements belong to which expansion, treat that uncertainty as a reason to wait. Community guides can help map achievements, but verify the result against the current Steam listing because publishers can add, rename or remove content.
When buying one DLC is the better choice
Purchase an individual expansion now when all three conditions are true:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- It contains the specific achievements you want.
- You would enjoy its missions, maps or characters even if no achievement existed.
- The current price is acceptable compared with the hours and replay value you expect.
This approach avoids paying for a pass’s unwanted items and avoids financing unreleased content. It also lets you read reviews for the exact expansion rather than inferring quality from the base game’s reputation. If a game has several unrelated add-ons, buying only the one tied to your target achievements is the clearest way to control cost.
When a season pass is justified
A season pass can be good value when several of its listed expansions appeal to you and the discount remains worthwhile after excluding content you would never play. Evaluate the pass against the DLC you actually expect to use, not against the full theoretical value of every item in the bundle.
Calculate the real break-even point
List the individual prices of the expansions you would genuinely buy. Add those prices together and compare that total with the pass price. The pass is financially ahead only when its price is lower than that personal total. A bundle that is cheaper than buying everything is still poor value if you would skip most of the contents.

Do the comparison again after a typical sale. If the publisher regularly discounts individual expansions, a pass bought at full price may not beat waiting. Conversely, a pass that permanently includes a large discount can be attractive when you plan to play every included release.

Future DLC may be delayed, shorter than expected, technically rough or less interesting than its announcement. Steam’s expected release timing is not the same as a guaranteed delivery date or a guarantee of quality. Buying a pass early is therefore a trade-off: you receive a possible bundle discount in exchange for losing the option to review each expansion before paying for it.
When waiting for a sale is the rational move
Wait when the pass contains unreleased content, the achievement is optional, or the game has a history of discounting its add-ons. Waiting also gives reviewers time to evaluate campaign length, bugs, balance and whether the achievements are reasonable to earn.
Set a personal threshold rather than chasing a particular percentage. For example, decide that you will buy when the expansion reaches a price you can justify for its expected play time, or when every pass component has a release date and independent reviews. This prevents a short achievement hunt from turning into an expensive impulse purchase.
Comparison: individual DLC versus season pass
| Decision factor | Individual DLC | Season pass |
|---|---|---|
| Achievement necessity | Buy only the expansion that gates the achievements you want. | May include the required expansion plus unrelated achievement sets. |
| Playable content | You choose the campaign, map or character that interests you. | You receive a predefined package of current and future items. |
| Availability | Released content can be reviewed before purchase. | Some content may not yet be released. |
| Price | No bundle discount, but no payment for unwanted DLC. | Potential discount versus buying included items separately; the actual amount is title-specific. |
| Release certainty | Known for the content already available. | Future timing is based on the publisher’s expected schedule. |
| Replay value | Focused purchase for one expansion’s replay opportunities. | Higher potential value if you will replay several expansions. |
| Best fit | A targeted completion goal or one appealing expansion. | A broad plan to play most of the announced package. |
Counts, prices, discounts and included items are not stated universally because each game configures them separately. Use this table as a decision framework, then substitute the current values from the title’s Steam pages.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every DLC achievement is mandatory
Many games let you earn all base-game achievements without any add-on. Check the achievement grouping before concluding that a purchase is required. If only a handful of optional DLC achievements remain, decide whether those tasks are worth their own cost.
Confusing a season pass with the complete edition
A season pass may cover named expansions but omit cosmetic packs, bonus missions or later releases. Compare the pass description with the game’s complete-edition contents; do not infer inclusion from the word “season.”
Ignoring the base game requirement
DLC normally requires ownership of the underlying game. Verify that the edition in your library is compatible and that a package does not assume another expansion. A pass cannot replace a missing base-game license unless the store explicitly says so.
Buying before checking release status
A pass can show a compelling achievement total even when some achievements are attached to future DLC. Mark which items are playable today and which are only announced. If your goal is immediate completion, unreleased achievements cannot help you yet.

Some DLC achievements require online partners, a specific difficulty, a fresh campaign or a limited-time mode. Read the achievement conditions before purchasing so that you are paying for an achievable goal rather than a badge you cannot reasonably earn.

Expecting a refund to solve a poor fit
Refund eligibility depends on Steam’s current policy and your play time, and downloadable content can have additional restrictions. Treat the store’s policy as a safeguard, not as a substitute for checking the contents and reviews first.
A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions in order:
- Do I want the expansion’s gameplay without the achievement?
- Which exact achievement(s) require it, and are they part of the base list or a DLC grouping?
- Is the expansion released, reviewed and technically sound?
- Would I buy more than one included expansion in the season pass?
- Is the pass cheaper than the individual DLC I would actually purchase, both now and at a likely sale price?
- Am I comfortable paying before future content is delivered and evaluated?
- Does the required time, difficulty or multiplayer commitment fit my goal?
If you answer “no” to the first question, stop and reconsider: a percentage increase alone is usually weak value. If you answer “yes” to the first three and only one expansion matters, buy that DLC when the price is acceptable. If several released and announced expansions appeal to you and the bundle discount survives your personal comparison, a season pass is defensible. Otherwise, wait.
Examples of the decision in practice
One excellent expansion, several unwanted packs
You have completed the base game and want the achievements from one story expansion. The pass also contains cosmetic items and a multiplayer pack you will not use. Buying the story DLC individually preserves money and avoids paying for content that does not advance your goal.
Three campaigns you already plan to play
You enjoyed the base game, have read positive reviews of its first expansion, and expect to play two announced campaigns as well. The pass price is lower than the sum of those three individual prices, and you accept waiting for the unreleased campaigns. The bundle’s discount and your intended usage align, so the pass is the rational option.
Only the profile percentage matters
You do not want the added missions, and the required achievements would take dozens of hours. Because your benefit is limited to a higher displayed percentage, waiting for a deep sale—or skipping the DLC—is more sensible than paying full price for a cosmetic completion goal.
What to recheck before paying
Steam pages change. Reopen the store’s DLC list, achievement list and pass description immediately before purchase to confirm current prices, ownership requirements, release status and the achievement groups included. A title can add DLC achievements after launch, alter a package’s contents or run a temporary discount, so an earlier calculation may no longer apply.
