Short answer: A Bitcoin sell-off, by itself, is not evidence that Bitcoin is undervalued or that a rebound is near. Consider buying only if you can withstand a further severe decline, understand whether you are buying Bitcoin or using a leveraged derivative, and have a custody and recovery plan that fits your finances and time horizon. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) guidance describes risks; it does not provide a timing signal or personal recommendation.
What a sell-off does—and does not—tell you
A falling price tells you that sellers currently outweigh buyers at available prices. It does not tell you where a fair value lies, how far the decline will continue, or when buyers will return. The sources available for this guide do not identify a Bitcoin market bottom, define a current sell-off, or establish that any particular decline is a buying opportunity.
That distinction matters because a lower price can reflect changing expectations, forced liquidations, deteriorating liquidity, operational problems at an intermediary, or broader market stress. A purchase made solely because the chart is down is a timing decision, even if it feels like a value decision. You need a separate basis for owning the asset and a plan for being wrong.

Historical ranges show variation, not a floor
Riot Platforms, Inc.’s SEC-filed annual report gives the following approximate Bitcoin price ranges in its principal market. Each is an within-year range for the stated fiscal year, not a maximum drawdown calculation, a current quote, or a forecast.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Issuer and period | Approximate reported range | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Riot Platforms, Inc., fiscal year ended September 30, 2025 | $58,900–$124,500 | Price variation observed during that fiscal year; it does not identify a low that must hold. |
| Riot Platforms, Inc., fiscal year ended September 30, 2024 | $26,500–$73,800 | An annual-report market range, not an investor’s realized return. |
| Riot Platforms, Inc., fiscal year ended September 30, 2023 | $15,500–$31,900 | Historical variation that cannot establish future direction. |
Those figures demonstrate wide variation across years, but they do not answer whether today’s price is cheap. No current October 2026 price or verified sell-off percentage is established here, so avoid treating a particular percentage decline as a confirmed bargain.
What are the main risks?
Volatility can produce large losses
The SEC says Bitcoin’s exchange rate has historically been highly volatile and could decline drastically. Its investor alert includes an example of a drop exceeding 50% in a single day; that is an example in an older alert, not a measurement of current market conditions. The practical test is whether you could continue meeting essential obligations if your position lost a substantial part of its value, rather than whether a chart looks attractive after a decline.
The SEC summarizes the exposure plainly: “Bitcoin-related investments may be affected by such volatility.” A sell-off can therefore increase risk in the near term even when the purchase price is lower.

Protection may differ from bank or securities accounts
SEC guidance warns that Bitcoin held through a wallet or exchange does not have protections similar to insured bank deposits or conventional securities accounts. The scope of protection depends on the product, intermediary and jurisdiction; do not assume that a familiar-looking app provides the same safeguards as a regulated bank or brokerage account. Theft or fraud may also leave limited recovery options.
Platform, wallet and fraud risk
The CFTC notes that much of the cash market operates through internet platforms that may be unregulated or unsupervised. A platform can expose you to outages, withdrawal restrictions, poor security, insolvency or deceptive practices in addition to Bitcoin’s own price movement. Before sending money or personal information, investigate the legal entity, operating jurisdiction, withdrawal rules, fees, security controls and complaint process. Treat unsolicited messages promising guaranteed returns, secret signals or urgent deposits as a warning sign.
Leverage can turn a manageable loss into a forced exit
Buying Bitcoin in the spot market and taking a futures or options position are not interchangeable. The CFTC says leverage magnifies the effect of a change in the underlying cash price and describes speculation in virtual-currency futures and options as high risk. A relatively small adverse move can consume your margin, trigger liquidation and leave you owing fees or other amounts according to the contract. If someone approaches you with a derivatives opportunity, the CFTC advisory says to verify the seller’s CFTC registration and understand the contract before providing funds.

Custody errors can permanently block access
The SEC explains that a crypto wallet stores the private keys or passcodes used to control assets; it does not contain the underlying Bitcoin. Losing a key, seed phrase or required device can prevent access. A seed phrase can restore access when a private key or wallet is lost or damaged, which makes its confidentiality and backup procedure critical. Malware, phishing, fake support staff and mistaken transfers can also result in loss. These are operational risks separate from whether Bitcoin’s market price rises.

Decide what you are actually buying before comparing prices. The route determines leverage, intermediary risk, custody responsibilities and how a loss occurs.
| Route | Leverage | Key intermediary or custody exposure | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot Bitcoin purchase | Usually none unless you borrow | Exchange or broker access; either third-party custody or transfer to your own wallet | Can you withdraw? What fees, limits, security and legal protections apply? |
| Futures | Typically embedded through margin | Contract venue, margin rules and liquidation process | What is the maintenance margin, settlement method, expiry and maximum loss? |
| Options | Contract-specific; sellers may have substantial obligations | Venue, counterparty, collateral and exercise rules | What is the premium, expiration, strike, assignment risk and liquidity? |
| Third-party custody | Not inherently leveraged | Custodian controls or co-controls private-key access | What happens during a freeze, outage, insolvency or account compromise? |
| Self-custody | Not inherently leveraged | You control keys and recovery credentials | Can you create, protect and test backups without exposing the seed phrase? |
A hardware or other cold wallet addresses a custody choice, not an investment thesis. It does not reduce the possibility that Bitcoin’s market price falls.

A step-by-step decision process
- Define the money at risk. List the amount you could lose without impairing rent, debt payments, emergency reserves, taxes or near-term goals. If losing all of the proposed amount would create a serious problem, the purchase is not compatible with those needs.
- Set a time horizon. Decide whether you can leave the money exposed through prolonged declines. A short deadline for tuition, a home purchase or a bill is incompatible with an asset whose price can move sharply and whose sale may coincide with a loss.
- Choose spot or a derivative before choosing a platform. For a straightforward ownership decision, evaluate spot exposure. Treat futures and options as separate, high-risk instruments requiring margin, contract and liquidation knowledge. Do not use leverage to make a position larger than your loss capacity.
- Investigate the intermediary. Confirm the legal name, jurisdiction, available withdrawal methods, fee schedule, transaction limits, security features, account-recovery process and status of customer assets. Read how the service handles outages, freezes and suspected fraud. The CFTC recommends extensive investigation of platforms and wallets before sharing payment or personal information.
- Choose custody deliberately. Decide whether the intermediary will hold the keys or whether you will transfer Bitcoin to a wallet you control. Third-party custody reduces some technical duties but adds dependence on the provider. Self-custody removes that dependency while making you responsible for keys, backups, device security and transaction accuracy.
- Write a loss and exit plan. Record the maximum amount, purchase schedule if any, conditions that would make you stop, and how you will pay taxes and fees. Avoid a rule such as “buy every dip” unless it is affordable under several additional declines. A plan should specify what you will do if the market falls again, the platform is unavailable or your assumptions change.
- Use a small, testable transaction. If you proceed with spot Bitcoin, verify recipient addresses, complete account security checks and test a modest deposit or withdrawal before moving a larger amount. Keep records of confirmations, fees and dates. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to support staff, a website or another person.
How custody works in practice
Third-party custody
With third-party custody, a service maintains the keys or access infrastructure while your account shows a balance. Your practical risks include account takeover, withdrawal suspension, service failure and whatever customer-asset protections actually apply. Enable multifactor authentication, use a unique password, review login and withdrawal alerts, and understand the recovery route before depositing funds. These controls improve account security but do not insure the investment or prevent a market loss.
Self-custody and cold storage
A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline when not signing a transaction. The device is only one part of the system: the seed phrase or other recovery credential is the master backup. Create backups according to the wallet’s documented process, store them privately in more than one secure location where appropriate, and consider how trusted heirs could find instructions without gaining access prematurely. Do not photograph or upload a seed phrase, type it into an unverified website, or store it in an ordinary cloud note.
Before transferring a substantial balance, learn the wallet’s address format, fee settings and recovery procedure. A backup that has never been tested may fail when you need it. Test restoration with a small amount and keep the device, backup and PIN information separated according to your threat model. A cold wallet can reduce some online attack surfaces; it cannot make Bitcoin’s price stable or guarantee recovery from every mistake.

Questions to answer before you buy
- Could I tolerate losing a substantial part or all of this amount?
- Am I purchasing spot Bitcoin, or am I entering a leveraged futures or options position?
- What exact platform, custodian or contract venue will hold access, and what protections apply to that product in my jurisdiction?
- Can I withdraw or settle as expected, and what fees, limits and delays apply?
- If I choose self-custody, can I securely create, preserve and recover the credentials without exposing them?
- Does this decision fit my income, emergency savings, debts, tax obligations and time horizon?
- What specific event would make me reduce, stop or reassess the position?
Common mistakes during a sell-off
Assuming a lower price means lower risk
Price and risk can fall or rise together. A cheaper entry can still be followed by a deeper decline, wider spreads or reduced liquidity. Evaluate the amount exposed and the route used, not just the percentage shown on a chart.
Using leverage to recover a loss
Adding borrowed exposure after a decline increases the size of the next adverse move and can force liquidation at the worst time. Keep any derivative position separate from a long-term ownership decision and do not risk money needed for living expenses or obligations.
Confusing a wallet with protection
A wallet manages keys; it does not provide deposit insurance, guarantee a price or reverse an incorrect transaction. Select custody based on your ability to secure recovery credentials, and verify the service’s protections independently.
Responding to urgency or guaranteed-return claims
Scammers exploit volatile markets with fake recovery services, impersonated support agents and demands for immediate payment. Stop contact, verify through an independently typed official address, and never send keys or one-time codes. No platform can guarantee that Bitcoin will rebound after a sell-off.
Bottom line
There is no universal answer to “Should you buy bitcoin during a market sell-off?” The decline is not a valuation signal. A defensible decision starts with the ability to absorb a severe loss, a clear distinction between spot and leveraged exposure, due diligence on the intermediary, and a custody plan you can execute safely. The SEC and CFTC materials support those questions but do not identify a bottom, a suitable allocation or the right timing for you.
