Choose an Xbox Series X if you want the simplest, fixed-hardware way to play Bethesda releases in the Xbox ecosystem and use Game Pass from a television. Choose a Windows gaming PC if you want upgradeable hardware, adjustable graphics, extensive mod possibilities, other PC storefronts, and one machine for work and a wider range of games.

Both platforms cover Bethesda’s documented Xbox-and-PC releases, but no public announcement guarantees that The Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5 will launch on Series X, PC, or any other platform. That uncertainty, plus Microsoft’s next-generation Project Helix hardware plans, means your purchase should be based on the experience you want now rather than an assumed lifetime guarantee.

Quick verdict: which platform fits you?

Priority Better fit Why
Plug in a console and play on a TV Xbox Series X One fixed hardware target, console-style interface and controller support, and no component selection or driver maintenance.
Mods, graphics settings and upgrade paths Windows gaming PC You can tune settings, replace components and use title-specific mod tools where Bethesda supports them.
Game Pass access across Xbox and PC Either, depending on the plan and game Supported releases can be available on both platforms, but plan contents, pricing and regional catalogs change.
One machine for work and many PC storefronts Windows gaming PC A PC also runs non-Xbox PC games and ordinary desktop software.
Lowest setup effort Xbox Series X There is no need to balance a CPU, GPU, memory, storage and power supply before you can play.
Maximum long-term performance Windows gaming PC A graphics card, processor or storage drive can be upgraded, although upgrades add cost and technical work.

For a PC intended for Bethesda’s current high-end releases, do not assume that a recent office computer is enough. Starfield’s published requirements provide a useful floor for the class of system to buy.

What is actually known about future Bethesda access?

Starfield establishes the current Xbox-and-PC model

Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios’ first new universe in 25 years, launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 6, 2023. It was playable on day one through Game Pass. That is firm evidence that a major Bethesda game can ship simultaneously for Xbox consoles and Windows PCs with subscription access at launch.

It does not prove that every later game will follow the same schedule. A release can have different hardware targets, launch timing or commercial terms, so use Starfield as a documented example rather than a promise about an unannounced title.

Microsoft’s statements support some Xbox-and-Windows exclusives, not a complete future roadmap

A UK Competition and Markets Authority report records Microsoft’s 2022–2023 statement that some future ZeniMax releases would be Xbox exclusives, including a Windows PC version, and that future releases would be added to Game Pass at release. This is a record of statements made during the regulatory process; it is not a title-by-title guarantee or a launch-date announcement.

In a July 17, 2026 interview, Todd Howard said it was too early to comment on Xbox exclusivity for The Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5 and provided no launch window. Therefore, no buyer should treat either game as confirmed for Series X, PC, both, or a particular year. There is also no basis here for promising a PlayStation exclusion.

Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president for next generation, wrote on Xbox Wire on March 11, 2026: “Players should be able to play these games and more across devices, whether through purchases, subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass, or from other leading storefronts.” The statement points toward broad access options, but it does not identify every future Bethesda platform or settle the status of a specific game.

Project Helix makes a “buy once for a decade” assumption risky

Project Helix is a next-generation Xbox project with developer alpha hardware planned from 2027. Public information does not establish its consumer launch date, price, specifications or compatibility policy. A Series X remains a sensible console for games it supports, but you should not buy one on the assumption that it will run every Bethesda title released throughout the next hardware generation.

What PC hardware should you target?

Bethesda’s current Starfield support page lists unusually substantial requirements for a mainstream game. Both the minimum and recommended configurations require 16 GB of RAM, a discrete graphics card, 125 GB of storage and an SSD. The recommended graphics class is far above integrated graphics found in ordinary laptops and office desktops.

Component Minimum Starfield requirement Recommended Starfield requirement
AMD processor Ryzen 5 2600X Ryzen 5 3600X
Intel processor Core i7-6800K Core i5-10600K
Memory 16 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
AMD graphics Radeon RX 5700 Radeon RX 6800 XT
Nvidia graphics GeForce GTX 1070 Ti GeForce RTX 2080
Storage 125 GB; SSD required 125 GB; SSD required

These are Starfield requirements, not a guaranteed specification for The Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5. Future games may require more or less. Still, a new PC bought specifically for Bethesda games should meet at least the recommended Starfield class, include a fast SSD with room beyond the 125 GB installation, and leave a realistic upgrade path for the graphics card and memory.

Check the complete system, not just the GPU name

  • Confirm the processor, graphics card, RAM capacity and SSD space in the exact prebuilt configuration; a product page may advertise a powerful GPU while pairing it with inadequate memory or storage.
  • Allow space for Windows, patches, mods and other games. A 125 GB requirement is the installation minimum, not a comfortable whole-library capacity.
  • Verify the power supply, case airflow and motherboard expansion options if you expect to upgrade.
  • Plan for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, controller and operating-system license where those are not included.

Why Xbox Series X is the easier Bethesda machine

Fixed hardware removes compatibility decisions

Every Series X game targets the same core console hardware. You do not need to compare processor generations, graphics drivers, memory channels or SSD interfaces before installing a game. Updates are delivered through the console, and the TV-and-controller setup is ready for living-room play.

Game Pass can reduce individual purchases

When a Bethesda title is included in your Game Pass plan, you can play it without buying a separate copy while the subscription and catalog support remain active. Plan names, prices, included games and regional availability change over time, so check the current offering where you live before treating the subscription as a fixed cost.

The trade-off is a performance ceiling

Series X performance is fixed for the life of the console. You cannot install a faster graphics card or add a new processor when later games become more demanding. You also have less control over graphics options than on a typical PC, and console versions may differ from PC versions in settings or mod support.

Why a Windows gaming PC is the stronger enthusiast platform

Upgradeability can extend the useful life

A desktop lets you replace storage, memory, the graphics card and sometimes the processor. Upgrading only the limiting component can be more practical than replacing the entire machine, although compatibility checks, installation work and additional spending are part of the trade-off. A gaming laptop offers less upgrade flexibility, so distinguish it from a desktop when longevity is your main reason for choosing PC.

Settings and mod support are more flexible

PC versions normally expose more resolution, frame-rate, image-quality and input options. Bethesda games have a long modding tradition, and Windows is generally the better environment for large mod collections, load-order tools and community utilities. Mod support is title-specific: a future release may limit, curate or omit mods on one or both platforms, so do not treat “PC” as an unconditional promise of every mod feature.

You gain a broader Windows library

A PC can use Xbox-related services alongside other leading PC storefronts and run games that never ship for Xbox consoles. It also serves for productivity, creative work and general software, which can change the value calculation if you would otherwise buy a separate computer.

Maintenance becomes your responsibility

  • Windows updates, graphics drivers and game patches can occasionally introduce settings or compatibility problems.
  • You must choose sensible graphics settings for your hardware and troubleshoot crashes, storage shortages or conflicting mods.
  • Input, display and audio setup can require more configuration than a console connected to a television.

How Game Pass and Play Anywhere affect the decision

Xbox Game Pass is not one universal catalog. Access depends on the plan, country, platform and the game’s current licensing status. Catalog rotation means a title available today may later require purchase or a different plan. Verify the current listing before buying hardware solely for subscription access.

Xbox Play Anywhere allows supported games to be purchased once and played on Xbox and Windows PC, with supported progress and achievements carried across those devices. Xbox reported in 2026 that the Play Anywhere catalog had grown to more than 1,500 games. That figure describes the catalog as reported at that time, not a guarantee that every Bethesda game participates. Check the Play Anywhere badge for the exact title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a household with both an Xbox and a PC, Play Anywhere can avoid duplicate purchases for participating games. It does not automatically make every Xbox purchase a Windows license, and it does not turn a Game Pass subscription into permanent ownership.

Compare the total cost, not only the box

Current prices change by country, retailer, sales period and hardware configuration, so a responsible comparison should use a fresh local price check. Build two complete budgets:

  1. Console budget: Series X, television or monitor if you do not already have one, an additional controller if needed, storage expansion if your library grows, and the Game Pass plan you actually intend to use.
  2. PC budget: a system meeting the target CPU, GPU, 16 GB RAM and SSD requirements, plus monitor, keyboard, mouse, controller, operating-system licensing where applicable, headphones or speakers, and future storage or graphics upgrades.
  3. Game budget: compare the purchase price of the specific editions you want with the current Game Pass availability on each platform. Include downloadable content and mod-related tools only when the game requires them.

A console often costs less to start when you already own a TV and peripherals. A PC can deliver more non-gaming value and an upgrade path, but its initial setup usually includes more components.

Choose by scenario

Choose Series X when…

  • Your priority is sitting down in the living room and playing with minimal configuration.
  • You prefer a fixed target and do not want to troubleshoot drivers, settings or component compatibility.
  • You plan to use Game Pass heavily and have confirmed that the games you want are included on your plan.
  • You accept that future hardware compatibility and performance are not guaranteed for unannounced Bethesda releases.

Choose a gaming PC when…

  • You want to install mods, adjust graphics settings or use a high-refresh monitor.
  • You already need a Windows computer for work, school or creative applications.
  • You want access to Xbox-related PC releases plus games from other PC storefronts.
  • You are prepared to maintain Windows, drivers, storage and mod installations.
  • You can buy at least the recommended Starfield-class hardware rather than an office PC with integrated graphics.

Consider waiting when…

Waiting is reasonable if your only motivation is an unannounced Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5 release. Neither has a public launch window in the information available here, and Project Helix could change the console landscape after developer hardware begins testing from 2027. Buy now for games and uses you can identify today, not for a specification that has not been announced.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. List the Bethesda games you will play in the next two years and verify each title’s announced platforms.
  2. For PC, compare the complete specification with Bethesda’s published Starfield minimum and recommended requirements.
  3. Confirm the SSD has room for the operating system, the game, patches and any mod collection you expect to keep.
  4. Check the current Game Pass catalog and plan terms in your region.
  5. Look for the Play Anywhere designation if you expect to move between Xbox and Windows without buying a second copy.
  6. Budget for display and input hardware, not just the console or computer.
  7. Do not rely on rumors for Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5, frame rates, Series X compatibility or mod features; wait for a title-specific official announcement.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Xbox Series X for the simplest current Xbox-and-Game-Pass experience. Buy a Windows gaming PC for upgradeability, mods, adjustable performance and a broader library. Because future Bethesda platforms and Microsoft’s next console generation are not fully announced, choose the platform whose everyday benefits matter even if an unannounced game changes course.
