For a US buyer, buy an RTX 5090 now only if you need its capabilities immediately and can verify a reputable offer within your own price limit. NVIDIA lists a $1,999 starting price, but that is not a promise of current stock or a price you can actually pay. If the purchase can wait, monitor authorized retailers rather than paying a large scarcity premium: there is no confirmed restock date or reliable timetable for prices to fall.

What does an RTX 5090 cost right now?

NVIDIA’s US GeForce RTX 50 Series page lists the RTX 5090 starting at $1,999, checked October 11, 2026. That is the official starting price, not evidence that a card is available at that price. NVIDIA’s marketplace result listed the card at $1,999 but showed it out of stock; that indexed status is a snapshot, not live inventory across retailers. NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series lineup and NVIDIA Marketplace are useful reference points, but check the retailer listing itself before deciding.

As a dated indication of how far some offers had diverged, Tom’s Hardware reported on September 14, 2026, that the RTX 5090 had largely disappeared from US online retail and cited third-party listings around $6,500–$9,500 or higher on Amazon and Newegg. Those were reported listings at that time—not a market average, a verified current offer, or a normal value for the card. Tom’s Hardware’s September 14 report provides context, not a live price check.

Should you buy now or wait?

Buy now if the work cannot wait

If a specific gaming, creator, or compute workload depends on getting a 5090 now, compare reputable offers and decide whether any one of them is worth the premium to you. Set a maximum price before browsing; urgency can otherwise make an unusually high marketplace listing feel more reasonable than it is. A high asking price does not establish the card’s normal market value.

Wait if the purchase is optional

If your current GPU can meet your needs, waiting and monitoring more than one authorized retailer is the lower-risk choice than accepting a steep scarcity premium. But waiting is not a guarantee of better stock or lower prices on any particular date. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 10, 2026, an alleged production halt based on a leaked notice and market leaker claims; NVIDIA has not confirmed that decision in the evidence available here. Treat the report as a supply-risk signal, not an official discontinuation announcement. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report on the alleged halt.

How to evaluate an offer

  1. Check the exact card and seller. Confirm the precise SKU, seller identity, whether it is new or used, and whether the seller is authorized. Marketplace availability can include third-party offers that differ in condition and protections.
  2. Read the terms before paying. Check the return window, warranty coverage, and payment protections. Make sure the listing’s terms apply to the seller and exact card you intend to buy.
  3. Compare the total price with your limit. Use NVIDIA’s $1,999 US starting price as a reference point, not as proof of current availability or a mandatory street price. Do not treat a small number of expensive listings as representative of the whole market.
  4. Confirm the card fits your system. Check the exact board maker’s power-supply capacity and connector requirements, along with case clearance. NVIDIA’s UK RTX 5090 page describes an adapter connection using three PCIe 8-pin PSU cables, but that regional guidance does not replace the instructions for the specific board model. NVIDIA UK’s RTX 5090 page is a reference; verify the card maker’s documentation before installation.

Is the RTX 5080 a better alternative?

NVIDIA lists the RTX 5080 from $999 in the US, compared with $1,999 for the RTX 5090; both figures are official starting prices checked October 11, 2026, not guaranteed transaction prices. The 5080 is a different product tier, and the starting-price gap alone cannot show which card is better value for your workload. Compare current prices, performance in the applications or games you use, memory requirements, and power and case fit. The available evidence does not establish a comparable benchmark result between the two cards. NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series page lists both starting prices.

What is—and is not—known about future availability

The available US-focused evidence does not establish live stock across retailers, a complete retailer census, an average transaction price, a future restock date, or confirmation that production has stopped. Retail availability and seller terms can change, so check current listings and official NVIDIA communications when you are ready to buy. There is no sound basis for predicting when availability will improve.
