The main drawbacks of a current iMac are that you must choose its memory and internal storage up front, its port selection varies by configuration, and its screen is bundled with the computer. Repairs are possible for some models, but the available procedures and parts depend on the exact iMac. Apple’s current reference point is its 24-inch M4 iMac; configurations differ, so check the specifications for the model you plan to buy.
1. You cannot upgrade the memory later
On 24-inch iMac models released in 2021 or later, memory is integrated into the Apple M-series chip package. Apple Support says it “can’t be upgraded.” That makes memory a decision to settle at purchase, not a component to add later if your workload grows.
Consider the applications and files you expect to use throughout the computer’s useful life. Demanding creative work, large projects, or running several memory-intensive applications at once may call for more memory than everyday browsing and office tasks. Apple’s published current configurations reach up to 32GB of unified memory, but availability depends on the model and configuration. Check the exact options before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Internal storage has a fixed ceiling
Apple’s published configurations for the current 24-inch M4 iMac go up to a 2TB SSD. Choose an internal capacity that suits the files and applications you want readily available on the computer; do not assume you can later replace it with a larger built-in drive.

An external drive can expand storage, and Apple documents connecting storage devices and setting up Time Machine for automatic backups. It is a separate device, however, with its own cable and space on or near your desk. External storage can help with large media libraries or backups, but it does not increase the iMac’s built-in SSD capacity.
3. Port selection varies, and adapters may be necessary
Current iMac configurations come with either two or four ports. The ports use Thunderbolt/USB-C, and their supported standards depend on the configuration. If your existing accessories use a different connector, Apple notes that you may need an adapter. That can mean extra gear for USB-A devices, card readers, or other peripherals.
Before choosing a configuration, make a list of what you connect at the same time: storage drives, input devices, card readers, wired networking, and displays. If that list exceeds the available connections, factor in a compatible hub or dock and check its capabilities against the iMac’s ports. A hub adds another device and does not make every connection type or performance level available automatically.

4. The display is part of the computer purchase
An iMac bundles its display and computer as one system. That can suit a compact desk setup, but it is less flexible if you already own a suitable monitor or want to replace only the computer while continuing to use your screen.
You can add an external display, but support depends on the iMac configuration: Apple says the two-port model supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz, while the four-port model supports either two displays up to 6K at 60Hz each or one display up to 8K at 60Hz. Verify the exact model’s requirements before making a multi-display setup part of your buying decision.
5. Repair options depend on the exact model
Apple publishes repair procedures for selected recent iMac configurations, including procedures involving the display and logic board, and provides parts support for certain components of the 2024 24-inch iMac. Those resources show that repair routes exist for specific models; they do not establish that a repair is simple, inexpensive, or available in every location.

Before buying, check support information for the exact model and configuration, then confirm local service options and parts availability. Treat repairability as a model-specific question rather than assuming either that an iMac cannot be repaired or that a documented repair will be convenient.
How to weigh the trade-offs against a modular desktop
A modular desktop separates the computer from the display and may offer a different mix of ports, upgrade choices, and repair options. There is no single price comparison that applies across configurations. Compare the specific setups you are considering on these points:
- Memory and storage: capacity included at purchase and whether it can be expanded later.
- Connections: port types and count, plus the cost and compatibility of any adapters or hubs you need.
- Displays: whether you can reuse a monitor and how many external displays each setup supports.
- Desk setup: whether you prefer an integrated computer-and-screen system or separate components.
- Repair: available procedures, parts, and local service for the exact models.
For an iMac, also include any external storage you expect to buy in your setup planning. A comparison is most useful when it reflects the actual configuration and peripherals you need, rather than just the computer’s headline specifications.
