There is no confirmed consumer launch date for the next Xbox generation, so waiting is a bet on an unknown timetable. Microsoft says developer alpha hardware for Project Helix is planned to ship beginning in 2027, but it has not announced a consumer release date or price. Sony has not provided an official PS6 date or price in the information available here.

If you have a working console and no specific game you need now, waiting for more official details is reasonable. If you want to play current releases, choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X by checking the games you actually want, your existing library, friends’ platforms, physical-media habits and the live price in your region.

The short decision

Use this order of priorities:

  1. Identify the games you intend to play in the next 12 months. Confirm the platforms and release status for each title; do not assume a game associated with Xbox is exclusive.
  2. Check library continuity. A PS5 can run more than 8,500 PS4 games according to Sony, while Microsoft says Project Helix is intended to play Xbox console and PC games and that it remains committed to keeping four Xbox generations playable for years.
  3. Decide whether discs matter. Sony says newly released PlayStation games will be digital-only beginning in January 2028, although discs for games released before then remain playable on the cited disc-drive PS5.
  4. Compare the complete local cost. Current U.S. prices are unusually high, and the published figures come from different kinds of sources. Check the retailer price, taxes, delivery, warranty and any storage accessory before deciding.
  5. Only then weigh waiting. Project Helix’s 2027 developer-hardware plan is not a consumer launch window. Treat the consumer timing and price as open questions.

A discounted or used current-generation console can make buying now sensible, but the value depends on the individual listing’s condition, warranty, included controller and disc or digital model.

What “the next generation” actually means in 2026

Project Helix has a developer milestone, not a retail date

In a March 2026 Xbox Wire article summarizing a GDC keynote delivered on March 11, Microsoft said: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” The wording is specific: alpha hardware for developers. It does not establish when consumers can buy a finished console, what it will cost, which countries will receive it first or whether a retail launch will follow in the same year.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Developer hardware is used to build and test games. It can precede a consumer product by an unpredictable amount of time, and specifications or industrial design can change. Do not turn the 2027 developer plan into a prediction that a retail Xbox replacement will be available in 2027 or 2028.

There is no cited PS6 schedule

The available official information provides no PS6 release date or price. Sony’s current announcements about PS5 pricing and physical-media policy therefore cannot be used to infer a launch window for its successor. A decision to wait for “the next PlayStation” is consequently waiting without a published timetable.

What waiting can and cannot achieve

Waiting may give you better information about Project Helix, future software support and how current-console prices change. It also postpones access to games you could play today. Because neither platform has a confirmed consumer next-generation date in the cited material, there is no reliable countdown against which to calculate the number of months you would be waiting.

Current U.S. price evidence and how to use it

The following figures are U.S. amounts and should not be treated as universal or permanent. Sony’s numbers are recommended retail prices; the Xbox figures are secondary reporting. Confirm live prices in your country before purchase.

Console Published price Status and date What it means for the decision
PS5 with disc drive $649.99 Sony U.S. recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 Compare the premium with the value of playing existing and pre-2028 discs.
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 Sony U.S. recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 Lower listed price than the disc model, but no disc playback.
PS5 Pro $899.99 Sony U.S. recommended retail price, effective April 2, 2026 A higher-cost option that should be justified by your display and performance priorities; it does not change the next-generation timetable.
Xbox Series X disc model $799.99 Windows Central reported a U.S. price change effective August 1, 2026 Recheck the retailer listing because this is secondary reporting rather than an official price notice in the cited material.
Xbox Series X Digital $749.99 Windows Central reported a U.S. price change effective August 1, 2026 Compare against actual stock and against the price of a disc-capable alternative if you own games on disc.

Launch-era comparisons are misleading at these levels. A sale, bundle or older inventory can change the arithmetic, while taxes, shipping and regional pricing can erase an apparent difference. Compare like for like: disc model with disc model, included storage, controller count, warranty and delivered price.

Choose by the games you will actually play

Make a must-play list

Write down the five to ten games you expect to play first, then verify each title’s current platform, edition and release date on the publisher’s own listing. Include games already in your account as well as games you plan to buy. This prevents a platform label from substituting for a real availability check.

Do not assume Xbox-associated games are exclusive

Microsoft’s January 2026 announcement lists Fable for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, among other platforms. It also lists Forza Horizon 6 on Xbox with a later PS5 release planned. These examples show why the relevant question is “Where can I play this game now?” rather than “Which company publishes it?” Verify the current release status before paying for hardware.

Account for multiplayer friends

If your regular group already plays on one platform, that can outweigh a small hardware-price difference. Check whether each game supports cross-play and cross-progression; those features vary by title and are not guaranteed by the console manufacturer.

Existing libraries and continuity

PS4 games on PS5

Sony’s current product information says PS5 supports more than 8,500 PS4 games. The count is described as current and subject to change, and compatibility still needs to be checked title by title. If you own many PS4 games, list the ones you care about most and confirm their status rather than assuming every item in the catalog behaves identically.

The disc-drive PS5 is particularly relevant if your PS4 collection is physical. You need the disc-capable model to use those discs; a digital PS5 cannot read them. Digital purchases are tied to the appropriate account and entitlement.

Xbox generations and PC continuity

Microsoft describes Project Helix as intended to play Xbox console and PC games and says it is committed to keeping four Xbox generations playable for years. That is a stated continuity goal, not a guarantee that every title, accessory or purchased entitlement will work in every future configuration. Check individual game support and the account under which the purchase was made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also reported more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog in March 2026. That figure refers only to Play Anywhere titles, not the entire Xbox catalog, and it may change. It is useful if you move between Xbox and Windows PC, but it should not be used as a measure of the total number of games available on Series X.

How to audit your library before buying

  1. Export or list your purchased games and any discs on your shelf.
  2. Mark each title as digital, physical, subscription-based or unavailable to you.
  3. Check the publisher’s compatibility page for the exact console version.
  4. Check whether saves, downloadable content and achievements or trophies transfer.
  5. Price the replacement cost of any games that will not carry forward.

Physical discs, digital purchases and the January 2028 change

What Sony announced

Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior director of content communications, wrote that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement concerns newly released PlayStation games. Sony’s cited information also makes clear that discs for games released before January 2028 remain playable on the disc-drive PS5.

What this means for a buyer today

  • A disc-drive PS5 can still be useful for an existing PS4 or PS5 disc collection, including discs for games released before the cutoff.
  • The January 2028 policy reduces the future supply of new first-party PlayStation game discs, so buying a disc model does not guarantee that every future release will have a physical edition.
  • A digital PS5 avoids the disc-drive premium but removes the ability to use, lend or resell compatible game discs.
  • Digital purchases depend on account access, platform availability and the publisher’s entitlement rules.

The announcement does not say that older discs stop working in January 2028. Do not treat the date as a shutdown of the disc drive.

Questions to ask if you buy used games

Confirm that the listing contains the original disc, that the disc is readable, that any required code has not been redeemed and that the seller’s return policy covers defects. Compare the delivered used price with a digital sale price and with the cost of a new copy. The policy change may affect future availability, but it does not establish a current used-market price.

Subscriptions, storage and the total cost of play

Online multiplayer

Sony says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer. The available information does not establish current subscription prices or plan terms, so add the live price for your region to your ownership calculation.

Microsoft’s January 2026 title announcement names Game Pass Ultimate as a day-one option for certain announced games. That is an availability statement for those titles, not a promise that every Xbox game launches in the service. Verify the current catalog, plan price, renewal terms and whether the game remains available before treating a subscription as a saving.

Storage expansion

Large modern games can make the included storage the practical limit of a console. If you choose Xbox and need more space, Windows Central describes Seagate’s Storage Expansion Card as plug-and-play. Check the current model, capacity, compatibility, price and stock before buying; those details can change. For either platform, include the accessory only if your actual install pattern requires it.

Build a three-year cost estimate

Cost item How to calculate it
Console Use the current local delivered price for the exact disc or digital model.
Games Price the must-play list, subtracting only discounts you can verify.
Online subscription Use the current regional price and the number of years you expect to play online.
Storage Add an expansion device only when the included capacity will not meet your usage.
Accessories Include an extra controller, headset or charging equipment if you actually need it.
Replacement risk Allow for the cost of replacing a lost disc, failed controller or expired code when relevant.

This approach prevents a lower sticker price from hiding higher game or subscription costs.

When buying now is the rational choice

You have a specific current game

Buy now when the game you want is available on the platform that best fits your library and friends, and the local price is acceptable. The value is the months of play you gain, not a prediction about when a successor might appear.

Your current console is failing

If your existing system is unreliable, waiting for an unpriced, undated successor can leave you without access to your games. Check warranty or repair options first, then compare a new, discounted or used replacement.

You own a large compatible library

Library continuity can outweigh a hardware premium. PS5’s stated support for more than 8,500 PS4 games and Microsoft’s multi-generation continuity goal are relevant only after you confirm the particular games and entitlements you use.

When waiting makes more sense

You already have a working console

If your current system plays your backlog and you have no must-play release, waiting for more Project Helix information can preserve your cash and improve your information. Set a review date for yourself rather than assuming a launch will happen on a particular year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are flexible about platforms

Someone willing to play on either platform can wait for confirmed software lineups, real consumer pricing and independent compatibility details. A buyer committed to one exclusive or one friend group has less reason to delay.

You are buying mainly for future-proofing

Future-proofing is impossible to price when the future console’s consumer specification, price and date are unknown. Buy the system that satisfies today’s confirmed needs, or keep your current hardware until those facts become official.

A step-by-step buy-now-or-wait method

  1. Record your baseline. Note the console you own, its condition, your display, your controllers and the games you already possess.
  2. Make the must-play list. Include release timing, preferred edition, multiplayer requirements and whether each game is digital or physical.
  3. Verify platforms. Use current publisher listings. Remove assumptions based on a game’s historical association with a platform.
  4. Audit compatibility. Check PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox-generation support for every important owned game, including downloadable content and saves.
  5. Choose disc or digital. Consider your existing discs, lending and resale habits, and Sony’s January 2028 new-release policy.
  6. Gather live prices. Compare at least two local retailers or listings, including taxes, delivery, warranty and bundled accessories.
  7. Add recurring costs. Price online multiplayer access, subscriptions and any storage expansion for the period you expect to own the console.
  8. Set a waiting threshold. Decide what official information would change your choice: a consumer date, price, a particular game announcement or a price cut.
  9. Buy only when the threshold is met. If no new information appears and your current console remains adequate, continue waiting; if a must-play game or a good verified price arrives, buy the matching platform.

How the main buyer profiles should decide

The physical-library owner

Start with the disc-capable model that supports your collection, then verify each title. For PS5, the disc-drive version is the relevant choice for physical PS4 games and for pre-January 2028 PlayStation discs. Do not pay for a digital console and assume an external drive will solve every compatibility question.

The digital-first player

Compare digital console prices, store discounts, subscription catalogs and storage needs. The absence of discs simplifies setup but makes account access and publisher availability more important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cross-platform household

Check Play Anywhere or cross-progression support for the games shared across Xbox and PC, and confirm which account owns each entitlement. Do not count the more than 1,500 Play Anywhere titles as the size of the whole Xbox catalog.

The competitive multiplayer group

Match your friends’ platform first, then verify cross-play and the subscription required for online multiplayer. A technically attractive console is a poor choice if your regular group cannot join you easily.

The bargain hunter

Compare a discounted current console with the value of playing immediately. For used hardware, inspect condition, serial information, controller drift, disc-drive operation, warranty, return window and included cables. The available evidence does not establish a general used-market price, so judge the specific listing rather than applying a blanket percentage discount.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling developer hardware a launch date. Microsoft’s 2027 statement concerns alpha units for developers.
  • Assuming PS6 timing. No official PS6 date or price is established here.
  • Using stale launch prices. The cited 2026 U.S. prices are materially higher and must be checked against live local offers.
  • Treating every Xbox-associated game as exclusive. Fable is listed for PS5, and Forza Horizon 6 has a later PS5 release planned.
  • Misreading the disc announcement. Existing or pre-January 2028 discs are not stated to stop working.
  • Counting a catalog headline as a guarantee. Compatibility figures and Play Anywhere counts can change; verify individual titles.
  • Ignoring recurring costs. Online multiplayer, subscriptions and storage can materially change the three-year total.
  • Buying for an unnamed future game. Wait for a confirmed platform, release status and price before allowing a rumor to determine your hardware purchase.

Bottom-line decision

Buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X now when a confirmed game, library requirement or failing current console gives you value immediately and the complete local cost is acceptable. Choose PS5 when its confirmed games, PS4 compatibility or disc needs fit you best; choose Xbox when its current games, friends, account ecosystem or PC continuity do. If you have a working console and no urgent game, waiting is sensible—but wait for facts, not for an assumed 2027 retail launch. Project Helix has a developer-hardware plan beginning in 2027, while its consumer date and price remain unknown, and no official PS6 timing is established in the cited information.
