For a US buyer, buy now only when you need the console soon and the exact configuration is worth its current price. If your timing is flexible, waiting for a verified offer is sensible, but no reliable date or discount amount has been established for the next PS5 or Xbox hardware sale. The practical choice is to identify the model, storage, disc-drive requirement and acceptable delivered price first, then buy when an in-stock offer clears that target.
The short answer: when buying now makes sense
Buy now if you have a game you want to play immediately, a replacement console is urgent, or you find the exact model at a price that still fits your budget after tax and delivery. Waiting is better if you have no immediate need, are willing to consider a certified refurbished unit, or would only buy after a specific price reduction.
Do not treat a game or accessory promotion as proof that the console itself is discounted. An October 2026 Prime Big Deal Days report described offers on games and accessories but did not establish a PS5 or Xbox hardware price cut. Holiday or Black Friday discounts may occur, but their timing and size cannot be promised from the currently verified information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safest rule is simple: set a target price for one precise configuration, monitor that listing, and purchase when the console is in stock and the final checkout total beats your target. If you wait, keep checking availability as well as price; a cheaper listing that is out of stock does not help.

Current prices you can actually compare
Sony’s US recommended retail prices took effect on April 2, 2026. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee that every retailer charges exactly the same amount.
| Platform | Configuration | Price and context |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 1 TB model | $649.99 US recommended retail price |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825 GB, disc-free | $599.99 US recommended retail price |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB listing | $899.99 US recommended retail price |

| Xbox Series S | 1 TB, digital-only | $449.99 on Microsoft’s US storefront snapshot; stock and price are volatile |

| Xbox Series S | Refurbished | $329.99 on Microsoft’s US storefront snapshot |
| Xbox Series X | Refurbished 1 TB Digital Edition | $499.99 on Microsoft’s US storefront snapshot |
The one-dollar differences between Sony’s recommended prices and the PlayStation Direct listings are normal differences between an announced MSRP and a particular storefront’s displayed amount. Recheck the live listing before paying because stock, tax, delivery fees and prices can change.
Microsoft announced that, effective August 1, 2026, US prices would rise by $100 for 512 GB models and by $150 for 1 TB models. Xbox Wire attributed the decision to storage and memory costs, saying those costs had increased by more than 2.5 times and that Microsoft expected another doubling by fall 2027. That is Microsoft’s explanation and outlook, not an independently verified forecast. Microsoft also describes its certified refurbished consoles as available for up to $100 below MSRP, but the actual discount depends on the model and listing.
PS5 and Xbox: the differences that change the value
Start with the games you will actually play
The platform is more important than a small difference in the sticker price. Make a list of the games you intend to play in the next year and check which console supports each one, including any required edition or accessory. A lower-priced console is poor value if it cannot run the titles you want.

Xbox states that Series X and Series S support thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Xbox also says compatible Xbox One controllers and accessories work with the current consoles, although compatibility should be checked for a particular game or device. Those are Xbox’s platform claims; verify a specific title before buying.
Disc drive versus digital-only ownership
Disc support affects both convenience and the long-term cost of games. A disc-equipped console lets you use physical games and other compatible disc media, and it may let you buy used copies or resell games. A digital-only console requires downloads and ties purchases to the relevant digital storefront.
Series S is designed for disc-free gaming. Xbox describes Series X as supporting native 4K and being available in configurations with a UHD Blu-ray disc drive. Sony’s standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition likewise represent different ownership choices, so confirm whether the exact PS5 listing includes a drive rather than relying on the word “PS5” alone.

Match the console to your display
Xbox positions Series X for native 4K output, while Series S targets 1440p and can upscale to 4K. Both are specified for frame rates up to 120 frames per second, subject to the game and display, and both support expandable custom storage. A 4K television does not automatically make Series X the right choice if you mainly play at a desk or on a 1440p screen; conversely, a large 4K display makes the extra capability more relevant.

PS5 Pro costs substantially more than the standard PS5 models. Choose it only when its additional capability and 2 TB storage address a need you can identify, rather than assuming the most expensive model is the best value for every display.
Include storage and expansion in the budget
Installed games can consume enough space that the advertised capacity matters. The listed PS5 Digital Edition has 825 GB, the standard PS5 listing has 1 TB, and the PS5 Pro listing has 2 TB. Xbox Series S is sold in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, while Series X configurations include a UHD Blu-ray drive and Xbox lists a dedicated Storage Expansion Card as an add-on option.
Compare the console plus any expansion you expect to need, not just the base unit. A cheaper 512 GB or 825 GB model can lose its advantage if you immediately have to buy additional storage. Conversely, a larger-capacity model may be worthwhile when you keep several large games installed and want to avoid repeated downloads.
Calculate the price you will really pay
Use the same calculation for every offer:
- Console price for the exact model and storage capacity.
- Sales tax for your delivery address.
- Shipping or other checkout fees.
- Any disc-drive accessory or storage expansion you need.
- The value of a physical-game option if you would otherwise buy every game digitally.
For example, comparing a $599.99 digital PS5 with a $649.99 standard PS5 is not a $50 decision if you would later need a drive solution or prefer used discs. Similarly, compare the $449.99 Series S 1 TB listing with the $649.99 Series X listing only after deciding whether native 4K, a disc drive and additional performance matter to your setup. The $200 headline difference describes the products, not necessarily your eventual cost of ownership.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Write down the final delivered total and the return period before you compare another listing. This prevents a nominal sale price from winning when its tax, shipping or less favorable return terms make it more expensive in practice.
What is known about upcoming sales
No verified source establishes the date or size of the next PS5 or Xbox console discount. The October promotion reporting mentioned above concerns games and accessories, not a confirmed hardware reduction. Current US hardware unit sales also should not be used as a sale forecast: Circana’s US Retail Tracking Service, as reported by Tom’s Hardware, recorded 2026 year-to-date ending-August unit sales down 33% year over year for Xbox and down 25% for PlayStation. Those are sales volumes, not prices and not evidence that a particular promotion is imminent.
Waiting therefore has an opportunity cost. You might receive a discount, but you could also face a stock shortage, a model change or another price adjustment. If you wait, decide in advance how much savings justify the delay. For example, “I will wait for an in-stock standard PS5 at or below my target delivered total” is actionable; “I will wait for a big sale” is not.

Use price protection carefully
Microsoft says qualifying purchases may be eligible for a price adjustment within 60 days under its stated terms. The policy is limited by product eligibility, market, stock, eligible retailers and other conditions. It does not mean every Xbox purchase from every retailer will be refunded if the price falls.

- Slim Design, players get powerful gaming technology packed inside a sleek and compact console design.
- 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
- Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games
- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
If you buy from the Microsoft Store, save the order details and read the policy’s conditions at checkout. If you buy elsewhere, use that retailer’s own price-adjustment and return rules. Do not pay a higher price solely because you assume a future adjustment will apply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision process that works for either platform
- List the games and services that matter. Confirm platform availability and any generation or accessory requirement.
- Choose physical or digital ownership. Decide whether you need a disc drive for physical games or media.
- Match performance to your screen. Note whether your setup is 1440p, 4K, or capable of high refresh rates.
- Choose storage. Compare 825 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 512 GB options, then price any expansion you realistically need.
- Set a delivered-price target. Include tax, shipping and required accessories; write down the exact model number or configuration.
- Check new and certified refurbished listings. Compare condition, warranty, return period, stock status and the actual storage and drive configuration.
- Set a buy trigger. Purchase when an in-stock offer meets the target and the return terms are acceptable. Otherwise, keep tracking the exact listing rather than reacting to unrelated accessory promotions.
When a refurbished console is the better buy
Manufacturer-store refurbished units can reduce the entry price. The PlayStation Direct snapshot listed a certified refurbished slim Digital Edition at $499 and a certified refurbished slim PS5 at $549. Microsoft’s snapshot listed a refurbished Series S at $329.99 and a refurbished Series X 1 TB Digital Edition at $499.99.
Those prices are useful only when the unit’s condition and protection suit you. Before ordering, verify the warranty length, included accessories, cosmetic grading, return window, storage capacity, disc-drive status and current stock. A refurbished console with a short return period may be a worse risk than a slightly more expensive new unit, while a manufacturer-certified listing with clear terms can be an effective way to meet a strict target price.
Regional Sony prices
Sony’s April 2, 2026 recommended prices differ by market. The following figures are regional recommendations, not conversions of the US prices and not guarantees of local retailer pricing.
| Market | PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £569.99 | £519.99 | £789.99 |
| Europe | €649.99 | €599.99 | €899.99 |
| Japan | ¥97,980 | ¥89,980 | ¥137,980 |
Use the price and consumer-protection rules for your own market. Importing a console to chase a lower nominal price can introduce different warranty coverage, delivery charges, taxes, power-plug requirements or return arrangements.
Common buying mistakes
- Comparing different configurations: A 1 TB disc model, an 825 GB digital model and a 2 TB Pro model are not interchangeable price points.
- Confusing MSRP with a live listing: Sony’s announced prices and PlayStation Direct’s displayed amounts differ slightly, so label each figure correctly.
- Assuming a game sale means a console sale: Promotions can cover software and accessories without reducing hardware prices.
- Ignoring stock: A low price marked out of stock is not a purchase option.
- Forgetting expansion: Add the cost of storage you will need, including an Xbox Storage Expansion Card where applicable.
- Assuming price protection is universal: Microsoft’s 60-day policy is conditional and does not automatically cover third-party purchases.
- Waiting without a limit: Set a target and deadline so an uncertain future discount does not postpone the games you want indefinitely.
The practical verdict
Choose the platform around your games, disc preference, display and storage needs, then compare the exact delivered price. Buy now when that configuration is in stock at a price you accept and you need it soon. Wait when timing is flexible and you have a defined target, but do not assume that Black Friday, a holiday event or a game-and-accessory promotion guarantees a console discount. Certified refurbished listings can be the most direct savings opportunity today, provided their condition, warranty and return terms are clear.
