There is no universally correct date to buy. Buy now if your current phone is failing, unsafe, unsupported, or missing an essential capability; compare the exact models and terms available in your market. If your phone remains reliable, waiting is reasonable, but current industry forecasts do not promise lower prices, better local stock, or availability of a particular model by a specific date.
The short answer: decide from your phone’s condition, not a headline forecast
Global smartphone production has improved against earlier expectations, yet analysts still describe the market as under pressure. That combination means a forecast of “less bad” production is not the same as a recovery you can see in a local store. Your decision should start with practical urgency:
- Buy now when the phone has hardware failure, a battery that cannot last safely through normal use, a broken display or camera you depend on, unreliable calls, or software support that has ended.
- Wait when the phone works reliably, receives needed security updates, and meets your performance, camera, battery and connectivity requirements.
- Either choice can be sensible when your phone is merely slower or less convenient. Set a target price and compare total ownership cost rather than trying to predict the exact bottom of the market.
A worldwide forecast cannot tell you whether a specific unlocked smartphone is in stock at a nearby retailer, whether its local price will fall, or whether your preferred storage and color will be available. Those are model-, retailer- and region-level questions.

| Global production | TrendForce reported 275 million smartphones produced in the second quarter of 2026, down 8% year over year. It raised its 2026 production forecast from 1.05 billion to 1.07 billion units, reducing the projected annual decline from 16% to 14%. | Shows factory output and planning. It does not show how many units are in your country, at your retailer, or in your required configuration. |
| Worldwide shipments | IDC forecast a 13.9% decline in 2026 shipments to 1.09 billion units, a further 1.1% decline in 2027, and a 5.5% rebound in 2028 as memory supply normalizes. | Shipments are units moving through distribution channels, not a promise of retail discounts or a date when a particular model will return. |
| Channel inventory | Omdia said channel inventories had largely normalized, while elevated component costs were expected to constrain supply and sustain higher device prices through the rest of 2026. | “Normalized” inventory means stock levels are closer to ordinary channel conditions; it does not mean component costs or phone prices have returned to earlier levels. |
The organizations use different methods, dates and definitions. TrendForce’s figure is production; IDC and Omdia discuss shipments and channel conditions. Do not add the percentages together or treat them as one unified index.
Why improved production is not a guaranteed recovery
Purchases were brought forward
In its September 8, 2026 release, TrendForce said the near-term improvement did not signal a genuine market recovery because some purchases were brought forward. It also said brands restored production plans that had been cut too aggressively. Those actions can lift a quarter’s output without creating a durable increase in consumer demand or store inventory.
Component costs can keep prices high
Omdia’s July 30, 2026 outlook separated inventory normalization from cost relief. It expected elevated component costs to constrain supply and sustain higher device prices through the remainder of 2026. Broad volume recovery was expected only after component costs begin to ease. A factory may be able to build more phones while the bill of materials remains expensive, limiting discounts.

Memory pressure remains a major variable
IDC quoted Senior Research Director Nabila Popal describing the deepening memory shortage as the dominant force behind the projected 14% drop in 2026, while noting that it was no longer the only factor. Memory availability can affect production plans, model mix and pricing, but IDC’s forecast is an estimate rather than a schedule for retail replenishment.

Vendors and price tiers are moving differently
Omdia reported different second-quarter results among vendors and a shift toward margin protection, selective price pass-through, and emphasis on mid-range and premium products. IDC said the downturn was concentrated in lower-priced products and varied substantially by region. A global average therefore cannot predict whether an entry-level phone, a premium model or a specific regional variant will be easiest to find.
A decision framework for buying now versus waiting
Use the following sequence before you act. It avoids making a costly purchase solely because a market article suggests scarcity—or delaying a necessary replacement in pursuit of a discount that may not appear.
1. Rate the current phone’s risk
- Critical: unexpected shutdowns, swelling or overheating, failed calls, a shattered screen that exposes components, or no longer receiving essential security fixes. Replace it promptly and handle battery or physical damage safely.
- Manageable: shorter battery life, occasional lag, limited storage or a camera that no longer satisfies you. Compare repair, battery replacement and a new phone’s total cost before deciding.
- Low: cosmetic wear or a desire for a newer feature while the phone remains dependable. Waiting gives you flexibility, but it does not guarantee a lower price.
2. Define the capability you actually need
Write down required features—such as reliable 5G bands for your carrier, dual-SIM support, a minimum storage capacity, camera performance, accessibility functions or a guaranteed software-support period. Avoid paying for a flagship specification that does not solve a real problem.
3. Check the local market for the exact configuration
Record the model number, storage, memory, color, warranty region and whether the handset is unlocked. Compare at least two local sellers and the manufacturer’s stated support period. “In stock” may refer to a different storage tier, a carrier-locked version or an imported unit with different warranty coverage.

4. Calculate the complete cost
Include the handset price, required accessories, activation or carrier fees, taxes, delivery, financing interest, and the value of any trade-in. A lower monthly payment can cost more overall. A trade-in estimate is not a guaranteed credit until the provider inspects and accepts your old phone.
5. Set a time or price trigger if you wait
Choose a concrete rule, such as buying when the exact model reaches your affordable price, when your current phone shows a defined failure, or when a required feature becomes available. Recheck availability periodically. Do not assume that a forecasted 2028 shipment rebound will translate into a discount in your market.
When buying now is the safer choice
Your phone is failing or unsafe
Data loss, missed emergency calls and an unreliable battery can cost more than a modest price change. Back up your data, verify the replacement’s carrier compatibility and return policy, and choose a model you can afford without stretching the budget.
You need a dependable phone for work, travel or accessibility
Waiting is risky when a camera, navigation, authentication app, accessibility feature or supported operating system is essential. Check that the replacement is an official regional model and that required services work with your carrier and accounts.

A satisfactory local deal exists today
A current discount may be worthwhile when the exact device meets your requirements and the advertised price is available without conditions you cannot meet. Verify the final checkout price, warranty, return window and any carrier commitment before paying. Industry pressure means prices may stay elevated, but it does not make every present offer good value.
When waiting is reasonable—and how to wait intelligently
Your current phone still meets essential needs
If security updates, battery life, storage and network compatibility are adequate, postponing a purchase preserves cash and lets you observe local pricing. Keep a backup plan for sudden failure: maintain current backups, know your account-recovery methods and identify at least one compatible replacement.
You are targeting a new product cycle
Flagship launches, holiday promotions and shopping festivals can create temporary offers, but Omdia’s analyst Amber Liu said shipments were still expected to decline over the next two quarters despite that seasonal demand and persistent cost pressures. A launch event may improve selection without lowering every model’s price.

How to compare a phone available now
| Check | Questions to answer before ordering |
|---|---|
| Exact model | What are the model number, storage capacity, memory, regional variant and included charger or accessories? |
| Software support | When did support begin, how long are security updates promised, and does the seller document that policy? |
| Network compatibility | Does the unlocked version support your carrier’s required bands, VoLTE, 5G and eSIM features? |
| Price and payment | What is the final one-time price, and what is the total repayment including interest or fees? |
| Trade-in | Is the quoted value conditional on inspection, and what happens if the device is rejected or valued lower? |
| Returns and warranty | How long is the return period, who pays return shipping, and is warranty service valid in your country? |
| Stock status | Is the listed unit physically available, back-ordered, refurbished, imported or tied to a carrier plan? |
Financing and trade-in offers: useful, but verify the terms
Omdia identified financing and trade-in programs as strategies vendors may expand to make phones more affordable. That observation does not establish that a particular manufacturer or retailer has an offer for you. Before relying on one, confirm:
- Eligibility, credit requirements and geographic restrictions.
- The exact monthly payment, interest rate, taxes and activation fees.
- Whether promotional credit arrives immediately or over many billing cycles.
- The inspection rules, deadline and data-erasure responsibility for a trade-in.
- Whether leaving a carrier or paying off the balance ends the promotion.
Compare the program’s total cost with buying an unlocked phone outright. A trade-in or financing headline should reduce the amount you pay, not merely spread it over time.
Pitfalls that make timing decisions go wrong
Confusing channel inventory with store stock
Analysts can report normalized inventory while your local shop has no unit in your storage tier. Check the retailer’s dispatch estimate and ask whether the item is in a local warehouse or allocated for future delivery.
Assuming a forecast is a promise
Production and shipment forecasts can be revised as memory supply, component prices, demand and vendor plans change. Keep the forecast’s organization, measure and date attached to every number you use.
Chasing the lowest possible price
Waiting indefinitely can leave you with a failing phone or an unwanted configuration. A fair price for a phone that meets your needs today may be better value than an uncertain future discount.
Ignoring regional and model differences
Global results conceal differences in taxes, carrier bands, import rules, warranty service and vendor strategy. Compare only offers that are valid in your country and for the exact model you intend to use.
A practical action plan
- Back up your current phone and check its security-update status, battery health and network compatibility.
- List essential features, minimum storage and the maximum total amount you can spend.
- Check local stock and final prices for at least two exact model configurations.
- Read software-support, warranty, return, financing and trade-in conditions before comparing headline prices.
- Buy if failure risk or an affordable, suitable offer outweighs the uncertain benefit of waiting.
- If you wait, set a price or condition trigger, monitor availability and keep a replacement shortlist ready.
Bottom line
Buy the phone you need when your current device is no longer dependable or when a verified local offer fits your requirements and budget. Otherwise, waiting is a defensible choice, but the available evidence does not support a guaranteed recovery date, lower prices or improved stock for any specific model. Production, shipments and channel inventory are separate measures; your local price, configuration and support terms are the evidence that should decide.
