If you need a dependable computer for work, school, or a failing system, buy when you find a machine that meets your requirements at an affordable total price. Waiting specifically for RAM to become cheaper is not a dependable plan in October 2026. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook projects further increases in memory contract prices during the fourth quarter and says PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as manufacturers allocate more capacity to servers.

If your current computer is still reliable and the replacement is discretionary, waiting can make sense. Set a date to reassess, monitor complete-system prices, and keep an upgrade or repair option open. Neither TrendForce nor Gartner provides a verified date when consumer RAM will fall, and contract-market forecasts cannot tell you what a particular retailer will charge for a specific PC.

What the 2026 forecasts actually say

The evidence points to continued cost pressure, but it does not amount to a guaranteed retail price increase for every laptop, desktop, or memory kit. TrendForce tracks contract prices negotiated through the supply chain; Gartner’s figures are market estimates and forecasts. Retailers and PC makers can absorb costs, change specifications, discount older inventory, or alter margins.

Measure Published outlook How to interpret it
Conventional DRAM contract prices TrendForce projected a 10–15% quarter-over-quarter increase in 4Q26 A forecast for supply-chain contracts, not a quote for a consumer RAM kit
NAND Flash contract prices TrendForce projected a 15–20% quarter-over-quarter increase in 4Q26 NAND is used in SSD storage; this is not the same measurement as DRAM
Combined DRAM and SSD prices Gartner estimated a 130% increase by the end of 2026 versus 2025 A broad estimate covering memory and solid-state storage, not every product or market
PC prices Gartner forecast prices 17% higher in 2026 than in 2025 A global forecast, not a verified price change in your country
Worldwide PC shipments Gartner forecast a 10.4% decline in 2026 versus 2025 A forecast of market volume, not evidence that a particular model will be unavailable
Consumer PC lifetime Gartner forecast a 20% increase by the end of 2026 An expected market response to higher prices; your computer may last for less or more time

TrendForce’s September outlook says advanced-process capacity remains focused on high-performance server products, leaving the overall memory market undersupplied. It also says PC manufacturers are still procuring because they expect tight supply in 2027, while PC DRAM supply could decline as suppliers shift capacity to server applications. Higher component costs are already working through notebook inventories and weighing on end-market sales.

An earlier TrendForce outlook published July 3 projected 3Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices up 13–18% quarter over quarter and NAND Flash up 10–15%. That older forecast helps show how expectations changed during 2026, but the September outlook is the more current guide for 4Q26. Neither forecast supplies a date at which retail RAM is expected to become cheaper.

Buy now when waiting creates a real cost

Buying now is usually the safer choice when the computer is a requirement rather than a luxury. The cost of delaying is not limited to a possible change in component prices. Lost work, missed classes, downtime, emergency repairs, and data-recovery problems can exceed any saving you might obtain by waiting.

Your current computer is failing

Unexpected shutdowns, storage errors, overheating, damaged hinges, swollen batteries, or repeated operating-system crashes justify replacing an unreliable machine. Back up important files before the failure becomes complete. A slightly higher purchase price for a dependable system is often preferable to an unplanned purchase made after a breakdown.

You have a fixed deadline

Work projects, a school term, travel, or a software change can create a date by which the new PC must be ready. Allow time for delivery, setup, updates, data migration, and testing. Waiting until the last week removes your ability to compare configurations or return a poor fit.

A suitable system is already within budget

Judge the complete configuration rather than the memory line item. A machine with an appropriate processor, graphics capability, storage, cooling, warranty, and enough RAM for your workload can be good value even if memory contracts are rising. A lower advertised price is not a bargain if it requires an immediate memory or storage replacement.

You found a verified clearance or promotion

A retailer may discount an older configuration to clear inventory. Such an offer can outweigh a theoretical future RAM reduction, but verify the return period, warranty, upgradeability, and exact components. A temporary promotion is a fact you can evaluate today; a future price drop is only a possibility.

Wait and monitor when the purchase is discretionary

Waiting is reasonable when your existing PC handles your applications reliably, you have no firm replacement date, and you can tolerate price uncertainty. Do not wait on the assumption that RAM will reach a known lower price on a particular date: the available forecasts provide no such date.

Set a review date

Choose a specific checkpoint, such as four or eight weeks from now, rather than postponing indefinitely. At each review, record the prices and specifications of several complete systems. This prevents a vague expectation of cheaper RAM from turning into years of delay while your needs change.

Track total system prices

Compare similarly configured PCs, including RAM capacity, storage type and capacity, processor, graphics, operating system, warranty, and delivery. A manufacturer can respond to memory costs by changing a configuration instead of raising the sticker price. Comparing only a standalone RAM kit can therefore give you the wrong signal about the value of a complete computer.

Keep a trigger for buying

Define in advance what would end the waiting period: a price below your budget, a required specification becoming available, a failure in the existing system, or a deadline that cannot move. A trigger turns monitoring into a decision instead of an open-ended bet on the memory market.

Check whether an upgrade or repair solves the problem

Replacing a component can extend useful life at lower total cost, but compatibility and labor matter. Gartner expects consumer PC lifetimes to increase as prices rise; that is a market forecast, not proof that every older PC is economical to upgrade.

Confirm compatibility before buying memory

  • Identify the exact computer or motherboard model and consult its documentation.
  • Check whether it uses the required memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5; generations are not interchangeable.
  • Verify the supported capacity, number of slots, maximum module size, and speed.
  • For laptops, confirm whether memory is socketed or permanently soldered.
  • Check whether installing a module affects the manufacturer’s warranty.

Mixing modules with different capacities or specifications can work, but it may reduce operating speed or create instability. Matching modules recommended by the system documentation is the lower-risk approach. No current official compatibility or upgrade-price listing for your particular computer is provided, so those details must come from the manufacturer or a qualified technician.

Repair only when the rest of the system remains suitable

A memory upgrade cannot fix a failing motherboard, damaged display, worn battery, inadequate processor, or unsupported operating system. Estimate the complete repair cost, including parts, labor, shipping, and the value of your time. Compare that amount with a new PC that provides a warranty and the performance you need.

How to compare PCs without overpaying for RAM

Use the following order so a low memory price does not distract from a poor overall fit.

  1. Define the workload. Office applications, programming, photo and video work, 3D software, and modern games have different processor, graphics, memory, and storage requirements.
  2. Set a total budget. Include a monitor, keyboard, operating-system license, accessories, delivery, taxes, and any memory or storage upgrade you would perform immediately.
  3. Choose sufficient RAM capacity. Buy enough for your applications and multitasking rather than paying for an excessive capacity you will never use. Capacity is only one part of performance; memory speed and channel configuration also depend on the platform.
  4. Check upgradeability. A desktop with open memory slots or a laptop with replaceable modules gives you more flexibility if prices or workloads change. Soldered memory can be acceptable when the initial capacity is adequate, but it removes that future option.
  5. Evaluate the processor and graphics together. A large RAM number cannot compensate for a processor or graphics system that is too slow for your work.
  6. Check storage and expansion. Confirm SSD capacity, available drive bays or slots, ports, wireless standards, and display outputs. NAND and SSD costs are also under pressure in the forecasts, so storage should be included in the same total-price comparison.
  7. Review support terms. Compare warranty length, repair arrangements, return window, and the availability of replacement parts. A small price difference can be worthwhile when support is substantially better.

Understand what the forecasts do—and do not—predict

TrendForce’s contract-price outlook is an indicator of what manufacturers and suppliers may pay, not a direct prediction of a store’s shelf price. PC makers may have inventory purchased earlier, negotiate different contracts, change memory configurations, reduce margins, or use promotions to move a product. Exchange rates, taxes, shipping, local competition, and regional inventory can produce a very different result from the global trend.

Gartner’s estimate that combined DRAM and SSD prices could rise 130% by the end of 2026 versus 2025 should not be combined arithmetically with TrendForce’s quarterly DRAM or NAND figures. They cover different categories, measurement points, and time windows. Gartner’s separate forecast of PC prices 17% higher in 2026 is likewise a global estimate, not a promise that every model will rise by that amount.

Gartner also forecast that the sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028. That is Gartner’s forecast, not a settled outcome. If entry-level choices narrow, retaining or upgrading a usable computer may become more attractive, but it does not tell you whether buying a particular system today is better than buying one later.

A practical decision process

Use this checklist before placing an order or deciding to wait.

  1. Rate urgency. If failure would disrupt income, education, or essential communication, treat reliability as a cost and lean toward buying.
  2. Test the current PC. Check startup reliability, storage health, battery condition, thermal behavior, ports, and support for the software you must run.
  3. Price an upgrade. Confirm compatibility and obtain the complete cost for memory, storage, repair, and labor.
  4. Build a comparable shortlist. Record total prices and full specifications for at least two or three systems, including warranty and upgrade options.
  5. Choose a review date or purchase trigger. If you wait, write down when you will reassess and what result would make you buy.
  6. Protect your data. Maintain a current backup before any repair, upgrade, migration, or continued use of an aging drive.

Examples of how the choice changes by situation

A remote worker with random crashes

The cost of missed meetings and lost work is immediate. Back up the machine, check whether a repair can restore reliability quickly, and compare a replacement that fits the budget. Waiting for a forecasted RAM decline is not a sound reason to keep using an unstable work computer.

A student whose laptop meets current requirements

If the laptop is reliable and the next term does not require more demanding software, set a review date and monitor complete systems. Save for the total purchase, not just a memory kit, and keep a backup plan if the machine develops a fault.

A desktop user who needs more multitasking capacity

Check supported memory capacity and available slots first. A compatible upgrade may solve the immediate problem while preserving the existing processor, graphics card, and storage. Replace the whole system only if its broader performance or reliability is inadequate.

Bottom line for October 2026

There is no evidence-based date to wait for cheaper consumer RAM. The latest TrendForce outlook points to higher 4Q26 contract prices and possible pressure on PC DRAM supply in 2027, while Gartner forecasts higher PC prices and longer replacement cycles. Those signals favor buying when you have a real need and a fairly priced, well-configured system. If your current computer is dependable and the purchase is optional, waiting is acceptable—but make it a scheduled, data-driven wait based on complete PC prices, upgradeability, and your own deadline, not a promise that RAM will soon become cheap.
