Buy now if your current PC is failing or cannot handle work, study, or gaming you need to do soon—and you find a configuration that fits your budget. Wait or track prices if your current machine still meets your needs and you have a specific price target or confirmed announcement worth watching. There is no dependable date when PCs will become cheaper: forecasts for 2026 point to pressure on memory and storage costs, but they do not predict the checkout price of a particular system in your market.
What the 2026 price outlook does—and does not—tell you
Several market forecasts point to rising costs, not a guaranteed bargain for shoppers who wait. Gartner projected that combined DRAM and SSD prices would increase 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025 levels, and estimated that this could raise PC prices by 17%. These are projections published in February 2026, not observed results or a promise that every PC will become 17% more expensive. Gartner’s forecast describes market-level cost pressure, not a quote for a specific model or region.
Omdia reported that US PC shipments grew 1.0% in Q2 2026 and forecast a 10.7% decline in full-year US shipments. It said some Q2 growth reflected buyers and retailers bringing purchases forward ahead of expected price increases tied to memory and storage constraints. Those figures apply to US shipments; they are not a measure of the price change you will see at a local retailer. Omdia’s September 2026 update gives the regional context.

IDC forecast that PC average selling prices would rise 18.3% in 2026. An average selling price is a market projection, not a prediction that each product or store will raise its price by that amount. IDC’s 2026 outlook is useful for understanding the broad direction, but it cannot tell you whether a particular offer is good.

Buy now when delaying has a real cost
- Your current PC is failing or unreliable. If crashes, repairs, or downtime are disrupting essential work or study, the cost of continuing to use it may outweigh a possible future discount.
- You have a near-term workload it cannot handle. If required software or a game runs unacceptably, shop for a system suited to that workload rather than waiting for a general market shift.
- You have found a suitable system at an acceptable price. Check the exact configuration against equivalent options and recent local prices; a sale label alone does not establish value.
Memory and storage forecasts make it especially risky to assume that waiting will automatically lower prices. They do not, however, establish that you must buy immediately: the right choice still depends on how much you need the PC and what the exact system costs.
Wait or track prices when your current PC is adequate
Waiting is a reasonable option when you can keep using your computer without meaningful disruption. Make the wait purposeful: identify the configuration you want, track its local price, and decide in advance what price would make you buy. You can also wait for a confirmed sale or an official product announcement that matters to your use case. The available market outlook does not establish a dependable date for broad price relief or a verified near-term launch calendar.

Compare the benefit you expect from waiting with the inconvenience and risk of continuing on your current machine. A possible saving is uncertain; the value of having a working PC now depends on your own workload and timing.
Compare a prebuilt PC with the complete cost of building
Building is not automatically cheaper. Rising component prices can make a prebuilt gaming PC competitive in some circumstances, but the result depends on the exact parts, local offers, and support included. For a fair comparison, price the full self-build—not just the CPU and graphics card—against a prebuilt with similar capability. Include the motherboard, memory, storage, case, power supply, cooling, operating system, and any peripherals you need. Account for assembly, warranty, and support as well as the parts total.
If you already own compatible parts, reusing them may lower the upfront cost. Starting with less memory or storage and upgrading later can also be a budget tactic when the machine will still meet your actual workload. Do not cut capacity your work requires simply to reach a lower purchase price.

Make the comparison about your workload and total cost
Whether you are comparing two systems or choosing between buying and waiting, judge the whole decision rather than one headline specification. Check:

- Total local price: include required software, peripherals, assembly, and any other costs needed to make the system usable.
- Performance for your actual tasks: consider the CPU and GPU together, and focus on the applications or games you use.
- Memory and storage: choose enough capacity for your workload and consider whether future expansion is practical.
- Compatibility and upgrade path: check what can be reused or upgraded and whether the parts fit together.
- Warranty and support: compare the coverage and service terms, not just the hardware specifications.
- Practical fit: where relevant, compare power use, noise, and size.
- Cost of waiting: weigh the value of using the PC sooner against the uncertain future price and the inconvenience of delay.
There is no universal answer to “Should I buy a PC now or wait?” or “Is it worth waiting for PC prices to go down?” If your machine is blocking something important and a suitable option is affordable, buying now is the practical choice. If it still works for you, track the configuration you want and wait only for a concrete reason—not the assumption that prices must fall.
