If your phone still meets your needs, compare a repair quote for its exact model with the price of a suitable replacement phone before deciding. Battery-health readings can help, but practical battery life, coverage, repair availability, and the condition of the rest of the phone matter too. There is no universal price or battery-health cutoff that makes replacement the right choice for every phone.
How do you decide whether to replace a phone battery or buy a new phone?
Compare both options using the same questions. A battery repair is more compelling when the phone otherwise works well and should remain useful to you after the repair. A new phone may make more sense if the current one has other problems or no longer supports the features you need.
- Cost: Get an exact-model battery-service estimate, then compare it with the cost of a replacement phone that actually suits your needs.
- Coverage: Check whether a warranty, service plan, or other coverage applies before paying for service.
- Condition and usefulness: Consider the phone’s overall condition, features, and whether you expect to keep using it after a battery repair.
- Availability and timing: Check whether repair is available for your model in your location, how it can be serviced, and what turnaround to expect.
There is no evidence-based universal break-even percentage or price that applies across phone models. The useful comparison is the actual repair estimate against the price of a suitable replacement, with the phone’s remaining usefulness factored in.
How much does a phone battery replacement cost?
The price depends on the phone, its coverage and condition, and the service provider and location. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized provider for an estimate for your exact model rather than relying on a generic battery-replacement price.

Apple iPhone estimates and service
Apple’s estimate depends on the selected device and inspection. Fees may be subject to tax or shipping, and Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. Apple lists in-person service through a Genius Bar or an authorized provider, as well as mail-in service. Check the current estimate and options for your phone on Apple’s iPhone service and repair page.
Google Pixel estimates and service
For Pixel phones, the estimate depends on warranty status, the issue, the repair partner, and location. Google’s estimate process asks for the phone’s IMEI and the reported issues. Google lists walk-in and mail-in repair, and cost may vary by method. Check your exact device and location using Google’s repair-cost estimate guidance and Pixel repair options.

How should you use battery-health information?
Check the battery-health reading available for your phone, but do not treat it as the whole decision. A reading estimates capacity or battery condition; it does not by itself tell you how long the phone will last in your everyday use. Apple notes that actual iPhone battery performance depends on factors including how the phone is used and charged regularly (Apple battery service and recycling guidance).
Google Pixel guidance is model-specific
Google says Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold should retain up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles, after which battery replacement is recommended. Google defines Battery health status as an estimate of remaining capacity compared with when the battery was new. This guidance applies to the listed Pixel models, not every Pixel or other phone (Google’s Pixel battery guidance).

Apple’s 80% figure is an AppleCare service condition
Apple says it will replace an iPhone battery at no extra charge when its capacity falls below 80% for covered AppleCare service. That is a coverage condition, not a universal recommendation to replace every phone battery below 80%. Confirm applicable coverage and terms on Apple’s iPhone service and repair page.
When is battery replacement likely to be the better fit?
Consider getting a repair estimate if the main problem is short battery life and the phone otherwise continues to do what you need. The repair is only useful if the model is serviceable where you are and the estimate makes sense compared with a replacement phone you would actually buy.

If your phone’s battery is swelling, stop using it and seek appropriate service rather than treating it as an ordinary runtime issue. Google’s Pixel battery guidance includes information about battery swelling; follow the guidance for your device and contact the relevant manufacturer or service provider.

A replacement phone deserves consideration when a battery repair would leave you with a device that still fails your needs—for example, because of other hardware problems or features you now require. Compare against a suitable replacement, not simply the cheapest phone available. If the phone remains useful after a battery repair, the repair quote and your coverage can help clarify the choice.

What to check before you decide
- Identify the exact model. Use the phone’s settings or device information so the estimate and service eligibility match your device.
- Check battery condition and everyday runtime. Use the health information available for your model, then consider how long the battery lasts in your normal use.
- Verify coverage. Check warranty or service-plan terms before requesting paid service.
- Get a local, model-specific repair estimate. Confirm what the price includes, the service route, and expected turnaround with the manufacturer or authorized provider.
- Price a suitable replacement phone. Compare its cost and usefulness with the repaired phone—not just the repair charge in isolation.
Replacement batteries and repair kits are model-specific, so a generic kit cannot answer this decision without knowing the phone. A power bank can extend runtime temporarily, but it does not resolve whether to repair or replace the phone.
