For most buyers in 2026, a used electric Smart is the only realistic fortwo option. Production of the electric fortwo ended in March 2024, final new cars were delivered in July 2024, and no new fortwo can be ordered today. A used EQ fortwo makes sense as a compact urban runabout or second car if you can work within its short range and AC-only charging. Choose the EQ forfour when you need four seats. For regular motorway journeys, long trips or dependable rapid charging, choose a different electric car.
Can you still buy a new electric Smart fortwo?
Fortwo production has ended
Smart ended production of the electric fortwo in March 2024. The last new cars reached customers in July 2024, so a dealer advertising a “new” fortwo in 2026 would be offering old stock, a pre-registered car or an imported vehicle rather than a current-production model. The ADAC also records the EQ as unavailable new after mid-2024.
That distinction matters for warranty start dates, registration history, equipment and price. Ask for the vehicle identification number, first-registration date and an explanation of whether the car is genuinely unregistered, pre-registered or used.

What Smart sells now
Smart’s current range page lists newer models such as the #1, #3 and #5. Their body sizes, batteries, charging systems and prices are different from the discontinued EQ fortwo, so do not apply fortwo range or charging figures to them. Smart has announced a future smart #2 world premiere for the end of 2026, with market arrival planned for the following year. Pricing, technical specifications and availability by country have not yet been published.

Which used electric Smart models are available?
The used market is built around two battery-electric models sold from 2017: the two-seat EQ fortwo and the four-seat EQ forfour. The forfour ended in 2022; the fortwo continued until 2024. Both use a 17.6 kWh battery and an 82 PS rear-mounted electric motor.
EQ fortwo: the city specialist
The fortwo is the shortest and easiest Smart to place in a tight parking space. Its two-seat cabin and small footprint suit dense urban driving, short commutes, shopping trips and households that already have another vehicle for longer journeys. Coupe and cabrio versions exist, so check which body style is being advertised and whether its roof mechanism, seals and operating history are satisfactory.
EQ forfour: the practical compromise
The forfour adds two rear seats and a longer body, making it more useful for occasional passengers or a small family. Its production ended earlier, so age and remaining battery warranty can be more important than the badge year. Rear-seat space is still compact; treat it as a city-oriented four-seater rather than a long-distance family car.

The figures above are published specifications reported by EVGuide.uk in 2026. They are not a promise of the range from a particular used car; battery condition, temperature, speed, heating and tyres all affect the result.
How much range does a Smart EQ really get?
Use the official number as a ceiling, not a route plan
The official figures are 84 miles for the fortwo and 81 miles for the forfour. In typical town driving, EVGuide.uk reports roughly 60–80 miles in summer and 45–60 miles in winter. Heating, cold battery temperatures, wet roads, high speeds and degraded capacity push the result toward the lower end.
As an independent reference, the ADAC Ecotest recorded 100 km of range. That test result is useful for setting expectations, but it is one test under defined conditions rather than a guarantee for every climate or driving style.

Plan around a reserve
Urban owners can make the EQ work by treating the lower seasonal figure as the planning baseline and keeping a reserve for detours. A car that displays an optimistic full-charge estimate may still be healthy; compare that display with the battery-health report, weather and recent consumption rather than judging the battery from one dashboard number.

How does charging work?
AC charging only
The EQ fortwo and forfour do not support DC rapid charging. They charge using alternating current (AC), either from a home or workplace point or a public AC post. Many cars were fitted with the optional 22 kW onboard charger; that option can make a major difference when a compatible three-phase AC point is available.
Verify the charger before buying
Do not assume every EQ has the 22 kW hardware. Ask the seller to identify the option in the vehicle specification and demonstrate charging. Confirm that the Type 2 cable is included and inspect its plug, pins and insulation. A car that lacks the optional charger may still suit overnight home charging, but it will have fewer fast-AC opportunities away from home.

Test charging, not just driving
Plug the car in during your viewing or test drive. Charging should begin, remain active and show a sensible increase in state of charge. Charging faults are a known used-buying concern, and a short road test alone will not reveal them. If the seller cannot provide a suitable cable or refuses a live charging check, treat that as a reason to pause the purchase.
What does a used electric Smart cost?
The following UK figures are median asking prices from EVGuide.uk’s 2026 sample. They are advertised prices, not completed-sale values, and condition, mileage, body style and equipment can move an individual car well above or below the median.

In the same sample, EQ forfour examples were about £7,445 for 2020 cars and £7,248 for 2021 cars. Those figures show why a newer fortwo is not automatically better value: the forfour’s lower asking prices may appeal if you need seats, while battery-health evidence and maintenance history matter more than a small year difference.

What warranty remains on a used EQ?
Smart UK’s warranty terms provide an eight-year battery warranty, limited to 125,000 miles for the battery itself. Replacement eligibility is tied to a measured state of health below 70% under the conditions in those terms. The vehicle warranty is separate: Smart UK states a three-year term with unlimited mileage for a new vehicle.
For a used car, calculate the remaining time and mileage from the first registration date and odometer reading. A 2020 car may have less calendar coverage left than its model year suggests if it was registered earlier, while a high-mileage example can reach the mileage cap first. Ask for the written warranty terms that apply to the car’s market and registration history; do not rely on a dealer’s verbal summary.
Used-buy inspection: a step-by-step checklist
- Identify the exact car. Confirm whether it is an EQ fortwo coupe, EQ fortwo cabrio or EQ forfour. Record the VIN, first-registration date, mileage and current keeper details.
- Confirm charging equipment. Verify whether the optional 22 kW AC charger is fitted. Check that the Type 2 cable supplied with the car is present, undamaged and appropriate for your intended socket or public point.
- Carry out a live charging test. Connect the car during the viewing, check that charging starts, and leave it connected long enough to confirm that it continues rather than stopping with a fault message.
- Request a battery state-of-health printout. Ask for a measured report from a recognised diagnostic process, not only the estimated miles shown on the dashboard. Compare the result with the 70% warranty threshold and the car’s age.
- Check the 12-volt battery. Find its replacement date or test result. A weak 12V battery can cause starting, locking or charging-related faults even when the high-voltage battery is healthy.
- Review service and repair records. Look for scheduled servicing, software work, brake and tyre replacement, and any unresolved warning lights. Match invoices to the VIN and mileage.
- Search accident, recall and history records. Inspect the body for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, corrosion or signs of structural repair. Verify that safety recalls have been completed and obtain a vehicle-history check where available.
- Check the handover items. Make sure both keys, charging cable, locking-wheel-nut key if fitted, manuals and service documentation are included. Replacing missing electronic keys or cables can change the apparent bargain price.
- Drive in conditions relevant to you. Test low-speed manoeuvring, steering, brakes, suspension, heating, demisting, lights and the cabrio roof if applicable. Observe energy use and the displayed range after the drive, but do not treat that display as a battery-health certificate.
- Get warranty obligations in writing. Confirm who will handle a battery claim, what diagnostic evidence is required, and how much of the eight-year/125,000-mile cover remains before paying a deposit.
Who should buy a used electric Smart?
It is a strong fit when
- Most journeys are local and predictable, with summer distances commonly within 60–80 miles and winter planning closer to 45–60 miles.
- You value an exceptionally compact two-seat car, or you specifically need the forfour’s four seats.
- You can charge at home, work or a dependable AC destination and do not need DC rapid charging.
- You want a relatively inexpensive second car and accept that an older EV needs careful battery and charging checks.
- Parking space, manoeuvrability and low urban running convenience matter more than motorway comfort.
Choose another EV when
- Your normal use includes frequent motorways, long inter-city trips or journeys with little charging flexibility.
- You need predictable rapid charging during a trip; neither EQ model has DC rapid charging.
- You regularly carry adults or luggage and would find the forfour’s rear space restrictive.
- You need a current-production vehicle with a full new-car warranty rather than a used car whose coverage depends on registration, mileage and records.
New or used: a practical decision

Bottom-line buying advice
Buy a used EQ fortwo if its compact size solves a real parking or city-driving problem, you have reliable AC charging and an independent battery-health report supports the asking price. Select the EQ forfour when four seats are essential, while recognising that it is still a short-range urban EV. Do not buy either model expecting motorway touring or rapid-charge convenience. If you want a new Smart, wait for details of the smart #2 or choose one of Smart’s current larger models after checking that model’s own range, charging and warranty specifications.
