Buy now if your current laptop is failing, unsupported, or too slow for essential work. Wait if it still meets your needs and you can defer the purchase without taking a productivity or compatibility risk. Current market evidence does not identify a dependable date when laptop prices or stock will broadly stabilize, so waiting should be a flexibility choice—not a bet that prices will soon fall.
The most reliable approach is to choose the exact configuration you need, compare its current price with its own history, and buy when the value is acceptable. Broad shipment forecasts describe channel conditions; they cannot tell you when a particular laptop will be cheaper or back in stock.
What the latest market data actually says
Several 2026 reports point to a pressured, uneven PC market, but they measure different regions, periods, and stages of the supply chain. They should not be combined into a single promise about retail prices.

| Source and period | Coverage | Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gartner, preliminary 3Q26 estimate (October 12, 2026) | Worldwide desktops and laptops using Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS | 55.4 million PC shipments, down 22.4% year over year | Gartner attributes the decline to higher memory and storage costs, vendors prioritizing scarce components, and a shift toward higher-priced configurations. Lower-cost devices became less available. This is a preliminary shipment estimate, not a count of retail inventory. |
| TrendForce, 3Q26 component analysis (October 8, 2026) | Global notebook manufacturing economics | CPU, DRAM, and SSD together represented about 68% of the bill of materials for a mainstream notebook with a US$900 MSRP | This is a component-cost share. It does not mean the laptop price will rise 68% or that all of the cost will be passed to buyers. |
| Omdia, 2Q26 report (September 9, 2026) | United States | 18.8 million PC shipments, up 1.0% year over year; average PC sell-in price exceeded $1,000, up 12.0% | Retailers and channel partners reportedly secured inventory ahead of anticipated increases. Sell-in averages are not the live checkout price of a specific model. |
| TrendForce, September 4, 2026 outlook | Global notebook supply | CPU supply improved markedly from 2Q26, while DRAM and SSD costs continued to rise | Earlier procurement and pulled-forward demand supported first-half shipments. As lower-cost inventory is depleted, new products may reflect current component costs more directly. |
| TrendForce, 2027 forecast (October 8, 2026) | Global notebooks | Shipments may decline by a low-single-digit percentage in 2027; the decline could reach the high-single-digit range if DRAM and CPU costs stay elevated and brands pass through more cost | This is a conditional unit-shipment forecast, not a date-specific retail-price forecast. |
| Omdia, 2026 forecast | United States | PC shipments forecast to decline 10.7% | A US unit forecast does not establish the price or availability of an individual laptop. |
Gartner analyst Namrata Banerjee said the effect of higher memory and storage costs was fully reflected in PC pricing by the third quarter, noting that DRAM costs had surged five times year over year in the second quarter. That explains why inexpensive configurations can disappear even when premium models remain easy to find.

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
The apparent conflict between the reports is meaningful. US shipments grew slightly in the second quarter while buyers and sellers built inventory, then worldwide shipments weakened in the third quarter as that cushion narrowed. The result is a choppy, segment-specific market: one screen size or processor tier may be readily available while another has fewer choices and higher prices.
The decision: buy now or wait?
Buy now when delay creates a real cost
- Your laptop is failing, overheating, or losing battery capacity enough to interrupt work or study.
- It no longer receives security or operating-system support required by your employer, school, or software.
- Your workload has outgrown it: sustained compilation, large spreadsheets, video production, 3D work, local virtual machines, or accessibility software now runs unacceptably slowly.
- You have a fixed deadline, and a replacement must be configured, delivered, and set up before it.
- A suitable configuration is in stock at a price you can justify after checking its price history.
In these cases, the cost of waiting includes lost hours, emergency replacement risk, and possible data loss. A modestly better future deal is not guaranteed and may not offset those costs.
Wait when flexibility is worth more than a new machine
- Your current laptop performs the tasks you actually do and remains supported.
- You can postpone the purchase for several months without borrowing a computer or accepting unreliable performance.
- You are shopping for a nonessential upgrade, such as a brighter display or a lighter chassis, rather than solving a concrete limitation.
- The configurations available today force you to pay for specifications you do not need.
Waiting in this situation is rational because you retain the option to buy later. It is not a forecast that prices will fall: no cited source names a stabilization date, and the 2027 outlook remains conditional on component costs.

How to decide whether your current laptop is still adequate
Measure the workload, not the age
List the applications and files you use in a normal week. Note startup time, application launch delays, browser-tab limits, fan noise, battery runtime, and any crashes. If the machine completes essential tasks without repeated workarounds, age alone is not a reason to replace it.
Check support and compatibility
Confirm the operating-system support deadline, firmware availability, and compatibility with required software. A laptop that is fast enough but no longer receives security fixes can carry a higher risk than its benchmark performance suggests.
Price the cost of keeping it
Include a battery replacement, additional memory or storage where upgradeable, a dock, or repairs in your comparison. Also include the value of your time when slow performance repeatedly interrupts work. These are part of total cost of ownership, along with warranty, support, reliability, and software compatibility.

What to check before buying
Specify the configuration you actually need
Write down minimum requirements before looking at deals:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Memory: enough for your applications and multitasking, with headroom for the years you expect to keep the laptop.
- Storage: sufficient capacity and the performance needed for your files; verify whether the drive can be replaced.
- Processor: the class and generation required by your software, not merely the brand name.
- Display: size, resolution, brightness, refresh rate, color coverage, and whether glare is acceptable in your environment.
- Connectivity: ports, wireless standard, external-display support, and charging requirements.
- Weight and battery: priorities that affect daily usability more than a small benchmark difference.
Gartner’s report indicates that vendors have prioritized scarce components and that low-cost devices are less available. Being flexible about nonessential features—such as a particular finish, an extra-high refresh rate, or a small storage step—can preserve value without compromising the workload that motivated the purchase.
Treat AI hardware as a use-case decision
Some newer laptops include a neural processing unit (NPU) for local AI features. HP’s current buyer guidance recommends AI PCs for its small and midsize business users so employees have NPU capacity for needs today and two to three years from now. That is a vendor recommendation for SMB planning, not a requirement for every consumer. Pay for an NPU when a specific application you use benefits from local AI processing, privacy, battery efficiency, or an organizational deployment plan; otherwise, prioritize the processor, memory, storage, display, and support that your current work demands.

How to judge the price of a specific laptop
- Record the complete model identifier. A product name can cover several memory, storage, display, and processor combinations. Compare the exact configuration.
- Check several legitimate sellers. Confirm that the item is new, the warranty applies in your region, and the seller—not only the marketplace—will handle returns.
- Look at the model’s own price history. Compare today’s price with previous prices for the same configuration. Do not use worldwide shipment declines or an industry average as a target checkout price.
- Add unavoidable costs. Include delivery, taxes, required accessories, extended support, and any software you must purchase.
- Set a personal ceiling. Buy when the configuration meets your requirements below that ceiling, rather than waiting for an unverified market-wide threshold.
No available market report establishes a current retail price for a particular laptop. A low advertised price can also represent a different configuration, a short promotion, a regional warranty, or stock that cannot be delivered when you need it.

Set a review date, not a prediction
Choose a date that matches your flexibility—such as the start of a school term, a work project, or the end of your current device’s support period. Recheck the exact configuration then. A date on the calendar is actionable; a hope that “prices will stabilize soon” is not.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Track availability and substitutes
Monitor two or three configurations that meet the same workload. Decide in advance which substitutions are acceptable: one display size, a different processor tier with equivalent software support, or more storage instead of a higher refresh rate. Keep a backup option so a sudden stockout does not force an expensive emergency purchase.

Why a stabilization date cannot be promised
Notebook prices depend on several moving inputs, especially memory, solid-state storage, and processors. TrendForce reports that CPU supply improved after the second quarter of 2026, but DRAM and SSD costs continued to increase. A manufacturer can absorb some cost, change a configuration, reduce discounts, or shift production toward higher-priced products. Those choices affect individual models differently.
Shipment forecasts also have limits. Shipments count units entering distribution channels, not how many units are sitting on a store shelf or what a consumer will pay online. The US second-quarter shipment increase partly reflected inventory secured before expected increases, while the later worldwide decline reflected different timing and conditions. Neither establishes when retail inventory or prices will settle.
For 2027, TrendForce describes a possible low-single-digit shipment decline, with a high-single-digit decline possible if elevated DRAM and CPU costs are passed through more aggressively. That scenario signals uncertainty about supply and demand; it does not specify whether your preferred laptop will become cheaper, more expensive, or unavailable.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the task or support problem that justifies replacement.
- Set minimum processor, memory, storage, display, battery, and port requirements.
- Decide which specifications are optional and where you can substitute.
- Check support duration, warranty terms, return period, and repair options.
- Compare the exact configuration across sellers and review its own price history.
- Include accessories, taxes, software, and the cost of continued ownership.
- Buy if the laptop solves the problem within your ceiling; otherwise set a review date and maintain a backup plan.
Bottom line
There is no evidence-based calendar date to wait for. Replace a failing or unsupported laptop now, and buy a suitable configuration when its verified value is acceptable. If your current machine is reliable and adequate, waiting is sensible because it preserves flexibility—not because current forecasts guarantee lower prices or stable stock later.
