Buy the discounted iPhone now if you need a dependable replacement and the discount is real after trade-in, activation, financing and plan conditions. Wait if your current phone works, you can defer the purchase, and a specific upcoming feature or promotion is worth more to you than having a phone today. Apple’s latest Pro generation is already on sale, so waiting is no longer a way to get the first model after iPhone 18 Pro; it means waiting for an unannounced future generation or for a particular deal.
What “the next model” means in October 2026
The usual post-launch advice—wait for the newest iPhone, then buy the previous one at a lower price—needs caution this year. Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026 and stated that they reached Apple Stores worldwide on September 18, 2026. Apple highlights the A20 Pro chip, a redesigned battery, camera changes and iOS 27 features in its launch material. Those are Apple’s product claims, not independent laboratory test results. Therefore, “wait for the next model” currently means waiting beyond the iPhone 18 generation. Apple has not supplied a guaranteed future release date or a guaranteed price reduction for older phones in the material available here. If you are considering a purchase today, compare a verifiable offer with the value of using your current phone for several more months—not with an assumed future discount.

Apple’s U.S. shopping page, checked October 13, 2026, lists these starting prices. They are Apple’s displayed prices, not confirmed street prices, temporary retailer promotions or proof that a third-party listing is available.

Check the current Apple iPhone shopping page before deciding. Storage, taxes, financing, trade-in value and carrier incentives can change the amount you actually pay. The page also presents trade-in, carrier credits, financing, refurbished devices and accessories as separate purchase routes.
Use this decision framework before you click Buy
1. Start with your need date
If your current phone is failing, has unreliable charging, a damaged display, a battery that cannot last through your day, or no longer meets a work or safety requirement, a verified discount can be more valuable than an uncertain future price. A phone you can use now has practical value that a possible promotion later does not.
If the current phone works and you can wait without inconvenience, set a personal trigger instead of waiting indefinitely. For example, decide that you will buy when an unlocked phone with your required storage reaches a specified total price, or when a confirmed feature you need appears. Recheck the trigger when your current phone’s condition changes.
2. Calculate the true net price
Call a deal a discount only after calculating the amount that leaves your bank account or appears on every installment bill. Use this simple calculation:

Net cost = cash price or all installments + required fees − guaranteed trade-in value − guaranteed credits
Separate guaranteed reductions from conditional bill credits. A carrier promotion may require a particular unlimited plan, a new line, an activation, an eligible trade-in, and continued service for a set period. The advertised credit can disappear if you cancel, change plans or fail an eligibility check. Compare the total cost of that plan with the cost of keeping your existing service.
Also match like with like. A 256 GB phone in new condition is not directly comparable with a 128 GB refurbished device, an open-box unit or a phone sold for a different region. Include sales tax, shipping, activation charges, installment interest if any, and the value of accessories you must buy.

Apple says purchases made directly from it are generally unlocked, while some carrier-financed phones remain locked until they are paid off. An unlocked phone usually gives you more freedom to change carriers, use a local SIM or eSIM while traveling, and resell the device. A locked phone can still be a good value if you intend to stay with that carrier and understand the payoff rules, but its lower price is not equivalent to an unlocked discount.
4. Pay for features you will actually use
Choose a newer model when its specific camera capability, battery design, processing performance or software feature solves a problem you have. Do not pay more solely because the model number is higher. Apple describes the iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro chip, battery and camera changes in its launch material; those descriptions establish what Apple promises, not how the phone will perform in independent testing.
Write down your non-negotiables before comparing prices: storage capacity, camera functions, screen size, cellular bands, physical SIM or eSIM needs, battery endurance, weight and accessory compatibility. If the discounted phone meets every requirement, an extra generation may provide little practical benefit.

Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide includes iPhone 16 and the iPhone 17 family. That confirms current compatibility; it does not guarantee a particular number of future update years for any model. Check Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list for the models you are considering, and avoid assigning an invented support end date.

How to vet a discounted listing step by step
- Identify the exact device. Record the model, storage, color, region, condition (new, refurbished or open-box), model number and included accessories.
- Confirm the seller. Check the seller of record, return window, warranty provider and whether the listing is authorized or marketplace-supplied. Stock and prices can change quickly.
- Check network status. Look for an explicit unlocked statement, not merely “works with” a carrier. For a financed phone, ask when it becomes eligible for unlocking and what happens if you leave the carrier.
- Read every promotion condition. Note required trade-in condition, activation, new-line requirement, qualifying plan, bill-credit duration and any payoff or cancellation consequences.
- Compute the complete total. Add the phone’s cash price or every installment, tax, shipping, activation and plan difference. Subtract only credits you are certain you will receive.
- Compare with Apple’s baseline. Use the prices on Apple’s shopping page as a reference, while remembering that Apple’s displayed starting price may reflect a different storage configuration or purchase route.
- Verify return and warranty timing. A short return period can make a questionable discount riskier, especially for refurbished or open-box stock.
- Save the offer details. Keep screenshots or a written quote showing the model, storage, price and conditions; promotional pages can change before the order is delivered.
When buying now is the better choice
- Your current phone is unreliable, unsafe, or preventing work, travel or two-factor authentication.
- The offer is available for the exact storage and condition you need, and the net price remains attractive without assuming a future credit.
- You need an unlocked device and have found a listing that states its unlock status and return terms clearly.
- The discounted model already has the camera, battery, performance and connectivity features you value.
- You can use an immediate trade-in value that is documented and does not require a more expensive plan than you want.
In these cases, waiting has a real cost: more days with a failing device, a missed trade-in window or the risk that the current offer ends. That does not make every sale good; it makes a verified, suitable offer worth acting on.
When waiting is rational
- Your current phone works well and you have no deadline.
- You are waiting for a clearly identified capability, not a vague hope that a future model will be better.
- The current “discount” depends on a plan, new line or trade-in that would cost more than it saves.
- The listing has unclear storage, condition, seller, lock status or warranty coverage.
- You are unwilling to accept the current model’s compromises and would regret buying before the next generation is established.
Set a review date and monitor the total price. Waiting without a target can turn into postponing the decision forever, while waiting for a specific feature or confirmed promotion gives you a measurable reason to continue.

Apple’s U.S. store displays trade-in and carrier-credit routes, but eligibility and final values depend on the device, condition, carrier and plan. A trade-in quote is not the same as cash in hand until the old phone passes inspection. Back up and erase the old device only after confirming the new purchase and the return period.
For carrier credits, ask four questions in writing: What plan is required? Is a new line or activation required? How many monthly credits are issued? What balance becomes due if you cancel, upgrade or change plans early? Compare those answers with your current monthly bill and with an unlocked purchase. A lower phone installment can be offset by a higher service bill or by being locked into a carrier.

What recent price behavior does—and does not—tell you
Macworld’s October 2026 buying guide reports that the customary post-launch price pattern changed in 2026, including price increases in the United Kingdom for iPhone 17 and a return of iPhone 16 to its original price. This is secondary, UK-specific reporting. It does not establish what a U.S. retailer, another country or a particular seller will charge. Read the Macworld buying guide as evidence that waiting does not guarantee a cheaper previous-generation iPhone, not as a forecast for your local market.
Three practical buying scenarios
You need a replacement this week
Choose the best verified net price among models that meet your requirements. Confirm unlock status and return terms, then buy rather than gambling on an unknown future reduction. If the current phone can serve as a backup, preserve it until the new device is fully set up and tested.
Your phone is fine and you want better cameras
Wait if the camera change you want is tied to a specific upcoming model and you can tolerate the delay. Otherwise, compare the price of a discounted iPhone 17 or iPhone 16 with the features you actually use; a newer camera specification is not automatically worth hundreds of dollars.
A carrier offers a “free” phone
Translate “free” into the full installment and service commitment. If the offer requires a new line or an expensive plan, calculate the difference over the entire credit period. The offer may be worthwhile for someone already planning to keep that plan, but it is not an unconditional $0 phone for every buyer.
Final checklist
- Need date is documented.
- Exact model, storage and condition are known.
- Net cost includes taxes, fees, installments and plan changes.
- Trade-in value and bill credits are separated from guaranteed savings.
- Unlock status and payoff rules are written down.
- Return window and warranty are acceptable.
- The phone’s features solve a real need.
- Current software compatibility is checked without assuming a future support duration.
- The decision does not depend on an unverified promise that older iPhones will become cheaper.
Bottom line: Buy a discounted iPhone now when you need it and the verified total price, flexibility and feature set are right. Wait when your current phone is satisfactory and you have a concrete reason to expect a future model or promotion to matter. The fact that iPhone 18 Pro is already available—and that older-model prices can behave unpredictably by market—makes a personal price-and-need calculation safer than relying on the old “wait for the next launch” rule.
