There is no dependable calendar date when CPU prices will “settle.” Buy when the processor’s current price, workload performance and complete platform cost meet your needs. Wait only when the purchase is optional and the exact model’s recent price record gives you a concrete reason to hold off. A broad market index, an unconfirmed launch rumor or a general expectation that chips must get cheaper cannot predict the next price of the CPU listing you want.

Start with the decision that actually matters

“Should I buy a CPU now or wait?” is really three different questions. You may need an urgent replacement, you may be blocked by slow work or games, or you may simply want a discretionary upgrade. The right timing is different in each case.

Your situation Default action Why
Existing computer has failed or is stopping essential work Buy when a suitable model and compatible parts are available The cost of lost work and a temporary replacement can exceed a speculative discount.
Current system is too slow for a defined workload Compare suitable CPUs now, then buy when the total system cost fits your limit You can measure the performance you need instead of waiting for an undefined market event.
Optional upgrade with no deadline Track the exact CPU and set a price threshold Waiting is rational only when your own model-level evidence supports it.

That conditional approach is more reliable than asking whether “CPU prices” as a whole will fall. Different generations, sockets, retailers and stock positions can move in opposite directions.

Why nobody can give you a reliable “settling” date

A category index is not your retail listing

ComponentPrices distinguishes manufacturing price indexes from consumer retail prices. A factory index measures a different stage of the supply chain; it is not the amount charged for a particular processor in a particular shop. Its matched Newegg observations cover identifiable products, exclude other retailers, and do not include shipping, tax or completed used-sales prices. Those limits make the data useful for context, but not for naming a date when your chosen CPU will become cheaper.

ComponentPrices also reports a back-test of one rule across 1,252 past decisions and 11 factory price indexes. The rule said “wait” 48 times; 29 of those calls were followed by a higher index three months later, or 60.4%. That is the publisher’s historical test of a decision rule, not a probability that your retail CPU will rise, and not a forecast of future consumer prices. It demonstrates why a broad index should not be converted into a promise about one product.

Shipments and prices measure different things

Tom’s Hardware reported Mercury Research’s finding that desktop CPU shipments declined 20% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. Fewer units shipped does not automatically mean lower shelf prices: manufacturers, distributors and retailers can be managing inventory, changing product mixes or responding to costs. Treat shipment data as market background, not as a buy-or-wait signal.

Mercury Research principal Dean McCarron summarized the 2026 situation to PCWorld: “My main takeaway is that people have become very accustomed to the PC waterfall: getting more performance every year at the same price. That’s not going to happen this year. If you want performance, you’re going to have to pay for it. And if you’re trying to stay at the same price, you’re not going to get the same kind of performance boost.” The comment describes the year’s performance-and-price environment; it does not identify a future sale date.

Use current, model-level evidence

What the CPU Price Index can tell you

Tom’s Hardware’s U.S. CPU Price Index was updated October 2, 2026 and checks major online stores weekly. It lists current lowest prices and lowest-ever prices for desktop Intel Core Ultra and 13th- and 14th-Gen models, plus AMD Ryzen 9000, 7000 and 5000 series. This is a practical snapshot for a U.S. buyer: you can see whether a listing is near its own recorded low, far above it, or priced normally for that model.

A lowest listing is still a snapshot. Stock can disappear, a seller can change, and a promotion can end before checkout. Recheck the actual product page on the day you buy, including seller, condition, delivery charge, tax and return terms. Do not treat the index’s lowest-ever figure as a price you are entitled to receive.

Use value charts only as a screening tool

PassMark’s CPU Value Chart combines thousands of PerformanceTest results with retailer pricing and reviews both daily. It divides performance by price using the lowest currently available price from its affiliates. That can help you find candidates, but a single value score cannot represent every workload, region or buying option. A processor that looks strong per dollar in a multithreaded score may be a poor choice for a game, an application with a different bottleneck or a platform whose motherboard and memory cost more.

Step 1: Define the workload before watching prices

Write down what the computer must do and how often. “Faster” is not a specification. A gaming system, a video-encoding workstation and a general desktop can rationally choose different CPUs at the same price.

Gaming

Use reviews that report the games and resolution you actually play. At high refresh rates with a powerful graphics card, CPU differences can be visible; at a graphics-limited resolution, the same processors may perform similarly. Current comparison coverage identifies AMD’s X3D parts as especially strong in gaming, while rankings still depend on the title, graphics card, settings and price. Do not pay for a gaming advantage you cannot see with your present GPU.

Productivity and creation

For compiling, rendering, simulation, batch photo work or video encoding, look for tests using your application or a close workload. Sustained performance, core count, cooling capacity and power efficiency can matter more than a peak gaming frame-rate result. Some Intel refresh models remain competitive in lower price tiers and productivity, but the best choice changes as street prices change.

Mixed use

List the two or three tasks that consume the most time, then weight them. A small gaming lead may not justify a large platform premium if your paid work is primarily multithreaded. Conversely, a workstation benchmark average should not decide a gaming-focused purchase without game results.

Step 2: Build a short list of close alternatives

Start with the performance level you need, not with a brand or a product family. Select the exact CPU classes that fit your socket, memory and cooling plan, then compare models that are realistically available in your market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose independent tests that separate gaming and productivity instead of one blended ranking.
  • Compare current street prices, not launch MSRP or a one-day promotional price.
  • Check power draw and required cooling for sustained workloads.
  • Include integrated-graphics requirements, PCIe features and other capabilities your build needs.
  • Note the platform’s upgrade path and support policy, not just the processor’s benchmark score.

Keep two or three alternatives. If your first choice rises in price or goes out of stock, a close substitute may deliver nearly the same real-world result without forcing you to wait for an uncertain sale.

Step 3: Check the exact price history and the real checkout cost

For each shortlisted SKU, record the current price, the model’s recent low, the date of the observation and the complete delivered total. Repeat the check immediately before ordering.

  1. Verify the exact model. Distinguish retail boxed and tray versions, suffixes, integrated-graphics variants and region-specific listings. A similar name can hide a different specification.
  2. Check the seller and condition. Confirm that the listing is new, supplied by a seller you trust, and covered by a practical return policy. A low marketplace price is not equivalent to a low price from an authorized retailer.
  3. Add unavoidable charges. Include shipping, tax, required cooler hardware and any memory or motherboard change. Compare the delivered total, not the headline number.
  4. Record stock status and timing. A “lowest price” that is unavailable or has a long delivery window is not a usable deal for an urgent build.
  5. Compare the same date across alternatives. If one model is temporarily discounted, calculate whether its total platform cost still beats the alternatives.

Set a personal buy threshold such as “I will order when this exact CPU is at or below my budget and the platform total is acceptable.” That turns waiting into a measurable decision rather than indefinite price watching.

Step 4: Calculate platform cost and compatibility

The processor is only one part of the purchase. A CPU that is $30 cheaper can become the more expensive choice if it requires a new motherboard, memory kit or cooler.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New system build

Calculate the CPU, motherboard, memory, cooler, and any required mounting hardware together. Intel Core Ultra 200S, for example, requires an LGA 1851 motherboard and DDR5 memory. Its standalone price cannot be compared fairly with a drop-in processor that works with your existing board and RAM.

Drop-in upgrade

Check the exact motherboard manufacturer support list for the processor, the minimum BIOS or firmware version, power-delivery requirements and cooler compatibility. Update the firmware before removing the old CPU when the board supports that process. A processor that appears compatible by socket name may still need a firmware update or may be unsuitable for the board’s power limits.

Memory and cooling

Price the memory type and capacity the workload needs, not merely the cheapest compatible module. Sustained productivity loads can expose cooling limits that short benchmark runs do not. If the new CPU requires a stronger cooler, include that cost and the space, noise and power implications in the comparison.

Step 5: Decide whether waiting has a concrete reason

Waiting is defensible when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The upgrade is optional and your current system remains adequate.
  • You are tracking one exact model or a clearly defined alternative.
  • Its recent price record shows that your target price has occurred often enough to be plausible, or the current listing is unusually high relative to that record.
  • You have a deadline for ending the wait, so a small possible saving cannot consume weeks of useful work.

Buy now when the current combination meets your workload, budget and compatibility requirements; when the machine is failing; or when waiting would delay paid work, study or a planned build. There is no evidence supporting a universal date on which CPU prices will decline across models.

Do not rely on assumed price cuts or rumors

Product roadmaps and launch rumors are uncertain. An unconfirmed future chip may be delayed, sold at a different price, or require a new platform. Even a real launch does not guarantee that the model you want will be discounted immediately; supply, retailer inventory and demand can produce different prices for old and new parts.

Intel confirmed selected 2026 price updates and cited market dynamics, supply-chain costs and strong demand. That statement does not mean every CPU will rise, but it is a reminder that prices do not move only downward. Model-specific evidence matters more than a general assumption that time must make processors cheaper.

Practical decision paths

If your computer is urgently unusable

  1. Choose a CPU that is officially supported by the replacement motherboard or your existing board.
  2. Compare two or three models using tests for the work you must resume.
  3. Check in-stock delivered totals and return terms.
  4. Buy the option that meets the requirement without exceeding the complete system budget.

Do not delay an essential replacement for a rumored sale. A later discount is uncertain; the cost of downtime is immediate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are building a new PC

  1. Set the complete platform budget before selecting the processor.
  2. Choose the workload-appropriate performance tier.
  3. Price the processor, compatible board, DDR5 or other required memory, cooler and delivery together.
  4. Compare the total against close alternatives and verify firmware support.
  5. Order when the total is acceptable and the parts are available at the same time.

This approach prevents a CPU discount from being erased by an expensive platform or by a motherboard that is difficult to source.

If you are considering an optional upgrade

  1. Measure the current bottleneck in the applications or games that matter.
  2. Record the exact model’s current price and recent low.
  3. Set a maximum total price and a date by which you will decide.
  4. Buy if the threshold is reached and the performance gain is meaningful; otherwise keep the existing system and review the decision at your deadline.

How to interpret a “good deal”

A good deal is not necessarily the lowest CPU price ever recorded. It is the lowest acceptable total cost for the performance, features and support you need. Compare the price difference with the expected time saved in your workload, the cost of electricity and cooling for sustained use, and the value of keeping a stable system.

For example, if two processors deliver similar game results with your graphics card, the cheaper platform may be the better buy even when the more expensive CPU has a higher benchmark score. If one processor cuts hours from a paid rendering job each week, paying more can be rational even if its price history suggests a possible future discount. These are workload and budget decisions, not market forecasts.

A simple checklist before you click Buy

  • Have I identified the exact SKU and the workload it must serve?
  • Did I compare independent gaming or application tests that match my use?
  • Is the current listing price close to a realistic recent low for this model?
  • Did I verify seller, stock, shipping, tax, condition and return policy?
  • Did I add motherboard, memory, cooling and firmware requirements?
  • Will the processor work with my board at its supported BIOS version?
  • Would waiting affect work, study, gaming plans or a build deadline?
  • What is my maximum total price and my final date for deciding?

If the answers are clear and the total fits your limit, buying now is sensible. If the purchase is optional and the exact model is unusually expensive, wait to your defined threshold rather than waiting for the entire CPU market to “settle.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will CPU prices go down after a new generation launches?

They may, but the timing and size of any reduction are not dependable. Stock, demand, supply-chain costs and platform requirements can make individual models move differently, so track the exact SKU rather than assuming a launch guarantees a discount.

Is a lowest-ever price in a CPU index guaranteed to return?

No. It records a past listing, often under specific stock and promotion conditions. Use it as context, then verify the current seller, availability and delivered total.

Should I choose a CPU with a higher value-chart score?

Use value charts to find candidates, then confirm performance in your own games or applications and include motherboard, memory and cooling costs. A single score cannot represent every workload or region.

What should I do if my motherboard is not listed as compatible?

Do not install the processor based only on the socket name. Check the board maker’s CPU support list and required firmware, and budget for a compatible motherboard if support is unavailable.
