Encrypt a secondary drive with BitLocker if its files would put your privacy, finances, work, or other interests at risk if someone accessed the computer or drive while Windows was offline. Before enabling it, confirm the volume is eligible and decide where you will keep the recovery key. Encryption is only useful if you can still unlock the drive when you need it.
What BitLocker protects on a secondary drive
BitLocker’s central purpose is to protect data when Windows is offline. Microsoft describes it as helping prevent data stored on a Windows computer from being revealed if the computer is tampered with while the installed operating system is offline (Microsoft BitLocker overview). That makes encryption relevant if a computer or drive could be lost, stolen, or accessed outside your normal Windows session.
It is not a cure-all for security risks while you are using the computer. The practical question is whether someone gaining offline access to the drive could see information you need to protect.
When encrypting the drive makes sense
- The contents are sensitive. Personal, financial, work, customer, or confidential files can make encryption worthwhile.
- The device or drive may leave your control. Travel, shared workspaces, or the possibility of theft increase the value of protecting data at rest.
- You can retrieve the recovery key. Know where the key will be stored and how you or your administrator can get it if normal unlocking fails.
This is a practical recommendation based on BitLocker’s offline-protection purpose and Microsoft’s recovery guidance, not a universal requirement for every drive.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
When to pause before enabling it
- If the drive contains nothing whose exposure would matter and it stays in a physically controlled location, the benefit may be limited.
- If you cannot establish a dependable recovery-key location, sort that out first. The recovery key is a way to regain access when the ordinary unlock method does not work.
- If you expect to move the drive between computers, plan how you will unlock it on the other computer rather than relying only on automatic unlocking.
Check whether the volume is eligible
Microsoft says Windows can protect multiple internal fixed data drives, but BitLocker controls may be unavailable for a particular volume. Reasons include insufficient size, an incompatible file system, a dynamic disk, or a system partition. Check the actual volume rather than assuming that every drive installed in a PC qualifies. See Microsoft’s BitLocker FAQ for supported configurations and eligibility details.
Do not assume every Windows edition, account setup, or organization policy presents identical controls. The available documentation does not establish a complete consumer edition-by-edition availability list, so verify what is available on your PC or with your administrator.

Choose an unlock method that fits how you use the drive
Automatic unlocking on the same PC
Automatic unlock can make a fixed data drive convenient for everyday use, but Microsoft requires the operating-system drive to be protected by BitLocker as well. If the OS drive is not protected, a fixed data drive cannot use automatic unlock. Details are in Microsoft’s BitLocker FAQ.
Using the drive on another computer
A data drive protected with a password or smart card can be unlocked on another computer. If it was set up for automatic unlock only, Microsoft says you will need its recovery key when using it elsewhere. If portability matters, make sure you have an unlock method and recovery access that will work away from the original PC. Microsoft addresses this in its key-management FAQ.

Plan recovery before turning on encryption
Microsoft lists USB storage, a printout, Microsoft Entra ID, and Active Directory Domain Services among possible recovery-material destinations. Which options you can use depends on your setup and organization policy. A USB flash drive is optional; it is not required to encrypt a fixed data drive.
Keep a recovery-key copy separate from the computer and the encrypted drive. Microsoft warns that keeping the device and recovery items in the same bag makes it easy for an unauthorized person to access the device. Treat the key as sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to unlock the protected drive. See Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery process for recovery options and handling guidance.

Make the decision
| Question | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|
| Would offline access to these files cause meaningful harm? | If yes, encryption is a strong practical choice. |
| Can you retrieve the recovery key if normal unlocking fails? | If not, establish a reliable recovery path before enabling BitLocker. |
| Do you want the fixed drive to unlock automatically? | Automatic unlock requires a BitLocker-protected OS drive. |
| Will you use the drive on another computer? | Plan for password or smart-card access, or have the recovery key available if configured for automatic unlock only. |
| Does the volume expose BitLocker controls? | If not, check for eligibility issues such as size, file system, disk type, or system-partition status. |
The cited Microsoft guidance does not provide a general performance benchmark for secondary-drive workloads. The impact for a specific PC depends on its hardware, drive, and workload; do not assume a universal speed change.
