Choose Arkand if you want a new city campaign; choose Book of Magic if your group wants more magical character and adventure options. They expand different parts of Dragonbane, and neither is required to begin playing. If your group is new to the game, start with the core rules before deciding whether more options will help or overwhelm your table.
What each Dragonbane book is for
Dragonbane is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game built around a skill-based D20 system: characters generally succeed by rolling equal to or below a skill value. Free League describes its intended tone as “mirth and mayhem.” The game’s source, Drakar och Demoner, first launched in 1982, according to the publisher. Both books below are optional expansions, but they serve different campaign needs.

What Arkand adds to a campaign
Free League describes Arkand as a city sourcebook with 20 adventure sites across five districts, campaign seeds, an underworld power struggle, opportunities for demon hunting, and secrets about the city’s past. It includes a separate full-color map measuring 17 x 22 inches (432 x 558 mm), credited to Francesca Baerald. Johan Sjöberg wrote the book, with illustrations by Johan Egerkrans and David Brasgalla. Its practical appeal is that it gives the GM a concentrated urban setting to work from instead of requiring the group to build one from scratch. The districts and sites give players places to investigate, while the power struggle and city secrets can provide longer-running campaign threads. The map can orient a table around the location; it is a useful setting aid, not a substitute for the group’s preferred miniatures or tokens.
In a review dated August 25, 2026, Ridge Harripersad of CGMagazine described Arkand as a change of pace from earlier Dragonbane material set in forests, mountains, and plains, with more water-based activity. Harripersad liked the included map and reported that the table enjoyed the setting. Those are the reviewer’s impressions, not a guarantee that every group will respond the same way.

A preparation detail to check
Harripersad also flagged one specific encounter: a giant octopus scene directs readers to the Dragonbane Bestiary entry, with a demon suggested as a fallback if the Bestiary is unavailable. The reviewer objected that the fallback has substantially different statistics. When preparing that encounter, check the book’s instructions and the relevant Bestiary entry rather than assuming the suggested substitute is mechanically equivalent. This is a reported example, not evidence that the rest of Arkand depends on the Bestiary.

What Book of Magic adds
Free League says Book of Magic introduces nine schools: Demonology, Harmonism, Illusionism, Necromancy, Symbolism, Witchcraft, Alchemy, Enchanting, and Dracomancy. It also adds material to General Magic, Animism, Elementalism, and Mentalism. The publisher describes the book as containing over 300 spells, magical recipes, enchantments, and magic tricks, along with lore about practitioners, social standing and reputation, familiars, and places characters can find training. These counts and contents are publisher-reported specifications.

That combination serves two audiences. Players can use the additional schools and magical options to pursue character concepts beyond the core choices; GMs can draw on practitioner lore and training locations for setting details or adventure hooks. It is a menu of possibilities rather than a promise that every table should add every option at once.
Scroll for Initiative describes Book of Magic as a 138-page hardcover, optional supplement that requires only the core rules. Its reviewer liked the added depth but cautioned that the range of new choices could be daunting for a group that has not yet played a full Dragonbane campaign. The same outlet recommends it more readily for groups already playing and enjoying the game. That is buying guidance from one reviewer, not a formal rule or universal verdict. Nerdarchy likewise saw value in the new schools and expanded spell progression for character concepts and GM material; it disclosed receiving review copies from Free League.

For a new group, a sensible sequence is to learn the core rules and play enough to discover what feels missing. Add Arkand when the campaign needs a city to explore; add Book of Magic when the table is ready for a much broader magical toolkit. Experienced groups can choose either immediately based on the campaign they want to run.
What to check before buying or preparing
- For Arkand: decide whether the group wants a city-centered campaign, and check whether the particular encounters you plan to run call for the Dragonbane Bestiary.
- For Book of Magic: consider whether players and the GM want to take on a larger set of magical choices, or would rather keep the core rules’ options in focus for now.
- For either: confirm the specific product format, local availability, and current price with the seller. Availability and price can vary by region and change over time.
Free League’s Book of Magic product page says a purchase includes a complete PDF delivered through DriveThruRPG. Launch coverage dated August 25, 2026 reported the expansions through publisher retail, hobby stores, DriveThruRPG, and the Foundry VTT Marketplace. That report does not establish current stock in a particular region. Free League’s Dragonbane and product pages are the best starting points for current product details.

If you want a physical accessory rather than another rules or setting book, Free League lists a Friends & Foes Standee Set with 79 illustrated cardboard standees for Path of Glory and Arkand. The publisher says bases are separate unless you use the bases from the Dragonbane Core Set. Harripersad noted that standees were not required for the reviewed table, so treat them as an optional play aid rather than a prerequisite.
Verdict: pick the expansion that solves a real campaign need
Arkand is the more direct choice when you want a ready-made city setting with locations and campaign prompts. Book of Magic is the stronger fit when you want to expand what magic can look like for characters and GMs. Neither is a must-have for Dragonbane; the right addition depends on whether your group wants a new place to explore, more magical possibilities, or both.
