Churches can use AI for limited sermon-support tasks, but they should not outsource sermon authorship, theological discernment, spiritual preparation, or pastoral care. A pastor may use an AI tool to organize research, suggest editing options, translate a draft, or brainstorm illustrations. The pastor and church remain responsible for every claim that reaches the congregation and for the human work behind the message.

There is no single Christian policy on this question. Denominational guidance differs, and the available official statements represent particular traditions rather than a universal consensus. The practical standard that fits the guidance is simple: use AI to assist accountable ministers, never to replace them.

What churches should decide first

Before approving any tool, a church should define which parts of sermon preparation are assistance and which parts are pastoral and theological responsibility. AI can process language quickly, but it does not receive revelation, pray with a congregation, know a member’s circumstances in the way a pastor does, or bear moral responsibility for words delivered from the pulpit.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made that distinction explicit in a December 16, 2025 update to its General Handbook: “AI cannot replace the gift of divine inspiration or the individual work required to receive it.” Elder Gerrit W. Gong similarly said, “Artificial intelligence cannot replace revelation or generate truth from God.” The handbook identifies research, editing, and translation as potentially helpful uses while reserving spiritual preparation and individual work to people.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Commission on Theology and Church Relations lists “Artificial intelligence-generated sermons” among five technology topics for study and discussion. That framing treats the issue as a matter for theological discernment, not as a question with an automatic yes or no.

Accordingly, a church policy should answer four questions before anyone pastes a sermon draft into a tool:

  • What human work must exist before and after any AI assistance?
  • Who verifies Scripture, quotations, history, statistics, and doctrine?
  • What information is prohibited from being entered?
  • When could congregants be misled about who authored the message?

Where AI can help without becoming the preacher

Research organization

An AI system can turn a pastor’s own notes into a list of themes, identify repeated ideas, or suggest questions for further study. It can help create a research plan around a passage or summarize material that the pastor then reads and checks. This is organizational assistance, not evidence that the system understands the text’s theological meaning.

Editing and clarity

After the pastor has written a substantive draft, AI can flag long sentences, unclear transitions, jargon, or inconsistent terminology. A useful instruction is to request several editing options while preserving the author’s meaning. The pastor should accept changes selectively and reread the complete message aloud; fluent wording can still conceal a changed claim.

Translation and accessibility

Translation, captioning, reading-level adjustments, and alternate formats can make a message more accessible. A qualified human speaker or translator should review any version used in worship, especially where a doctrinal term has several possible meanings. A literal-sounding translation can be wrong for the congregation’s language or tradition.

Brainstorming

AI can propose illustrations, discussion questions, titles, or applications. Treat these as prompts for the pastor’s judgment. Reject examples that are culturally insensitive, unverifiable, clichéd, or detached from the passage and the congregation’s actual situation. Brainstorming should not become a substitute for knowing the people who will hear the sermon.

Preparation partnership, not authorship

Barna and Gloo report that 24% of U.S. pastors say they write or edit sermons with AI help, up from 12% who said they were comfortable doing so in 2024. The page describes pastors using AI more as a research and preparation partner than as an author. The opened material does not provide detailed survey methods, so these percentages should not be treated as an estimate for every country, denomination, or congregation.

Tasks churches should not delegate

Receiving spiritual guidance

An AI output is generated from patterns in data; it is not a source of revelation or divine authority. A pastor’s prayer, study, vocation, and discernment cannot be replaced by a generated paragraph, however persuasive it sounds.

Determining theological meaning

The system should not decide what a difficult passage means, settle a denominational dispute, or choose a doctrine for the church. It may present interpretations, including incompatible ones, without showing which assumptions produced them. The pastor must consult the biblical text, trusted commentaries, denominational standards, and knowledgeable people where the issue is contested.

Pastoral application and care

Advice about grief, abuse, addiction, illness, marriage, discipline, or a member’s crisis requires relationship, confidentiality, and professional judgment. A generated application can sound compassionate while missing danger or causing harm. AI should never be the entity deciding what to say to a particular vulnerable person.

Final authorship and accountability

The Vatican’s 2025 note Antiqua et nova, paragraph 46, states: “Those who use AI to accomplish a task and follow its results create a context in which they are ultimately responsible for the power they have delegated.” In practical terms, the person who selects and delivers AI-assisted words owns the consequences. “The tool wrote it” is not a defense.

How much original human judgment remains? Copyediting a pastor’s completed draft Requesting a complete sermon from a title Require a human-authored outline and substantive draft first

A safe AI-assisted sermon workflow

  1. Start with prayer, the passage, and the congregation. Read the primary text, identify the pastoral purpose, and write your own initial observations before opening an AI tool.
  2. Set the boundary in writing. Record whether the tool will be used for research organization, editing, translation, or brainstorming. Prohibit it from deciding doctrine, inventing sources, or handling pastoral cases.
  3. Remove identifying information. Replace names, dates, medical details, counseling content, membership records, and private correspondence with generic descriptions. Do not paste sensitive church data into an unmanaged service.
  4. Ask for a narrow operation. For example: List questions I should investigate in this passage. Do not provide quotations or factual claims unless you identify them as items to verify. Narrow prompts make review easier than “write my sermon.”
  5. Check the output immediately. Mark each factual statement, biblical reference, quotation, statistic, and named source for verification. Treat an apparently precise answer as unverified until checked.
  6. Return to primary and trusted sources. Read the biblical passage in the translation used by the church. Confirm quotations in the original publication, historical claims in reliable references, and doctrinal assertions against the church’s own standards.
  7. Rewrite in the pastor’s voice. Keep only material that serves the text and the congregation. Remove generic anecdotes, invented personal experiences, unsupported certainty, and language the pastor would not naturally use.
  8. Obtain a second human review. A colleague, trained lay leader, or denominational supervisor can catch factual, pastoral, and cultural problems the original writer has missed.
  9. Decide on disclosure. Apply the church’s policy to the actual level of assistance. Do not claim sole human authorship if listeners would reasonably understand that a substantial portion was generated.
  10. Keep a record. Save the final draft, sources checked, reviewer, and type of AI assistance. A short log supports accountability when a question arises later.

Verification: what to check before preaching

  • Scripture: Confirm the reference, wording, surrounding context, genre, and whether the application follows from the passage rather than from a generated paraphrase.
  • Quotations: Locate the original speech, book, article, or interview. If the wording cannot be located, remove quotation marks and do not attribute it.
  • History and current events: Check dates, names, places, and causal claims in authoritative sources. AI can combine details from different events into a plausible but false story.
  • Statistics: Verify the population, geography, sample, date, and question wording. Never present an uncited number as a universal fact.
  • Theology: Compare claims with the church’s confession, catechism, statement of faith, or denominational guidance. Identify where traditions disagree instead of presenting one interpretation as uncontested Christianity.
  • Pastoral effect: Ask whether an illustration stereotypes a group, blames people for suffering, exposes private information, or gives unsafe advice.
  • Language: Check translations, captions, and accessibility versions with a fluent human reader from the intended audience.

Ministry Magazine advises ministers to use AI “only as another resource to supplement their study, not as a replacement for their personal research,” and specifically urges verification of facts and figures. That recommendation is a practical minimum, not a guarantee that an output is accurate.

Privacy and data protection

Churches often possess information that is more sensitive than a typical writing project: prayer requests, counseling notes, safeguarding reports, giving records, contact details, immigration or health information, and private messages. The General Handbook guidance warns against entering sensitive church records, member data, or confidential communications into AI tools that the church does not provide or manage.

Adopt a simple data rule: if the pastor would not paste the material into an unknown public forum, the pastor should not paste it into an unapproved AI service. De-identification helps, but unusual details can still make a person recognizable. A church-managed system should have documented retention, access, security, and deletion controls before it is used for anything confidential.

Disclosure and authorship policy

Disclosure should match the possibility of misunderstanding. A church need not announce every spelling suggestion, but it should not present a largely generated sermon as wholly personal work. The cited handbook principles call for attribution where AI authorship could mislead; they do not establish a universal requirement to disclose every limited research or editing use.

A policy can use tiers:

  • Routine assistance: Editing, formatting, or translation of a human-written draft may be logged internally and disclosed when the congregation’s expectations make it material.
  • Substantive assistance: If AI supplied a significant outline, illustration, explanation, or wording, the pastor should state that the message was AI-assisted and describe the human review.
  • Prohibited substitution: A fully generated sermon should not be delivered as the pastor’s own spiritual and theological work. If a church permits such an experiment for study, it should be clearly labeled and separately reviewed.

Use plain language rather than a legal disclaimer. For example: “I used an AI tool to organize background notes and suggest edits. I checked the sources, rewrote the message, and take responsibility for what is preached.” Adapt that wording to the church’s tradition and local expectations.

Governance, training, and review

Assign a named human owner for the policy, require reviewers for high-stakes uses, and revisit the rules as tools and denominational guidance change. The Methodist Church’s working group on AI identifies theological, pastoral, data and legal, educational, and practical ministry questions; those categories are a useful agenda for a church’s review team.

Training should include prompt boundaries, fact-checking, privacy, copyright and attribution questions, bias, and examples of fabricated citations. New ministers, volunteers, and communications staff should know which tools are approved and where to report an error. A quarterly or annual review can examine logged uses, complaints, corrections, and changes in the services’ terms or data practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One broader survey illustrates why training matters but should not be overread. A 2024 Exponential survey listed by the Christian Research Group received 663 responses and covered congregational AI use, leader frequency, and perceptions of ethics and training; the listing was updated July 17, 2025. Its response count and subject matter do not establish how all churches use AI. Similarly, a Ministry Magazine article from April 2024 reported that 64% of its respondents answered “Yes” when asked whether education models should adopt AI. That was a limited survey group, not a measure of clergy adoption or a universal church view.

When a printed Bible or commentary is the better tool

For independent Scripture study and sermon research, a printed study Bible or Bible commentary can provide a stable, human-edited reference without sending notes or member information to an AI service. It does not replace prayer, interpretation, or denominational resources, and no particular edition should be assumed to have a church’s endorsement. The relevant question is whether the resource helps the pastor examine the text and sources directly.

Bottom line for a church policy

Permit AI for bounded assistance such as research organization, editing, translation, and brainstorming when a pastor supplies the theological direction and checks the result. Prohibit delegation of revelation, doctrine, pastoral decisions, confidential data, and final accountability. Require verification, human review, appropriate disclosure, and a record of use. That approach acknowledges the technology’s practical value without confusing fluent generated text with spiritual authority or pastoral presence.
