Usually, bookshelf speakers benefit from stands when stands put their tweeters near your seated ear height and let you place them securely where they work best. Stands are optional, though: a stable shelf or cabinet can do the job if it provides suitable height and positioning. Floorstanding speakers ordinarily do not need separate stands.
What stands do—and when they are useful
A stand is a way to raise a speaker and give it a stable, flexible position. The practical target is to place the tweeter, or other high-frequency driver, approximately level with your ears in your normal seated listening position. Paradigm and Cambridge Audio both recommend this as a placement starting point (Paradigm’s placement guidance; Cambridge Audio’s positioning guide).
Stands are especially useful if your current furniture leaves the speakers too low, forces them too close together or too far apart, or prevents you from positioning them relative to the walls and listening seat. They can also help keep speakers off a desk or cabinet that rattles. These are practical setup advantages, not a guarantee that stands will improve sound in every room: the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal controlled comparison between stands and every possible shelf or cabinet.

How to choose between stands and furniture

Focal and KEF both discuss raised surfaces as alternatives to stands. Focal recommends using the supplied glides for shelf or cabinet placement, describing them as a way to stabilize the speaker and mechanically decouple it from the supporting surface (Focal’s bookshelf-speaker installation advice). Use the feet or glides specified for your own model.

How to set speaker height and position
- Measure your seated ear height. Sit in your usual listening position and measure from the floor to your ears.
- Account for the speaker’s tweeter position. The stand height must place the tweeter—not merely the speaker’s base—near the measured ear height. Check the speaker’s dimensions and the stand’s top-plate height before buying.
- Position the speakers around the listening seat. Aim for symmetrical placement where practical, and adjust spacing, distance from walls, and toe-in for your room. Paradigm advises avoiding corners because they can overemphasize bass and reduce clarity; treat that and its other placement advice as a starting point rather than a rule for every room.
- Make small angle adjustments. Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics, Ollie Marshall, says, “Usually 10 to 15 degrees is about right.” This is qualified toe-in guidance, not a universal angle or stand-height requirement.
- Check stability before listening. Ensure the speaker sits securely on the support and cannot be easily knocked over. Follow the manual for attachment hardware and any supplied feet or glides.
Check stand compatibility before buying
Stand height is only one part of the fit. Compare the stand’s top plate with the speaker’s base, check whether the speaker has compatible attachment points, and make sure the stand’s footprint is stable in your room. Mounting features vary by model: for example, Klipsch notes threaded inserts for future powered-speaker models, which should not be taken to mean every speaker has threaded inserts. Its KS-series bookshelf stands are listed in 24-inch and 28-inch heights; those are product specifications, not universal height recommendations (Klipsch’s KS-series stand page).
Give your speaker’s own manual priority over general advice. Designs, supplied accessories, and mounting instructions differ. The manufacturer recommendations cited here offer useful setup starting points, but room acoustics and listening position affect the result.
