No—a GPU fan does not have to spin continuously. Many graphics cards stop their fans at idle or under light loads, then restart them when the card’s own cooling conditions are met. A stationary fan can be normal, but not every card supports fan-stop, and there is no universal temperature at which every GPU fan should start. Check the exact card model’s specifications and support guidance before deciding whether something is wrong.

Why a GPU fan may stop spinning

Some graphics cards include a fan-stop mode that keeps the fans off when cooling demand is low. MSI calls its feature Zero Frozr; ASUS calls its feature 0dB technology. In those modes, the heatsink can handle low heat output without the fans running. The fan stopping by itself is not evidence of a fault.

These features are model-specific, not guaranteed by the GPU chip or brand. MSI advises checking the exact card’s product datasheet to confirm Zero Frozr support. ASUS likewise describes its 0dB behavior in relation to the conditions for particular cards. See MSI’s graphics-card fan troubleshooting guidance and ASUS’s 0dB support FAQ.

When should GPU fans start?

There is no single start temperature for all graphics cards. A fan controller may consider GPU temperature, power draw, whether a fan-stop mode is enabled, and other card-specific settings. The thresholds below illustrate why a number from one model should not be applied to another:

SCCCF 3x90mm 92mm Graphic Card Fans, Graphics Card Video Card VGA PCI Slot Fan GPU Cooler
  • 3 x 92mm fans combined into one interface, can be connected to the motherboard's 3-pin or 4-pin interface and you only need to access one interface to run all the fans
  • This cooling fan's total size is 11in(L) x 4.72in(W) x 1.18in(H), designed for most universal graphic card video card VGA cooling, just please check the size to make sure your pc has enough space
  • D-type interface cable included four interfaces, three voltages: 5V, 7V and 12V; different voltages with different airflow, speed and noise. You can select the appropriate voltage interface to start the fan
  • The double ball bearing has a service life of 65,000 hours, and the 7 blades produce strong airflow to keep the computer case cool
  • packing list: 3 x 92mm fans (PCI bracket screwed), 1 x multi-voltage cable ,1 x mini screwdriver,1 x fixing screw
  • ASUS examples (2025): ASUS lists a fan-start condition of GPU temperature above 55°C or wattage above 100 W for several RTX models. Its table also gives fan-stop conditions for certain models with 0dB mode enabled, including temperature below 50°C and wattage below 50 W. Other listed models have different conditions. These are model-specific examples, and ASUS notes that readings can vary with configuration, use, operating conditions, and power-management settings. See ASUS’s fan-stop threshold table.
  • MSI example (2021): MSI described supported Zero Frozr cards becoming silent below 60°C. This is an example from MSI’s guidance, not a universal threshold or current rule for every MSI card. See MSI’s explanation of slow or stopped graphics-card fans.

Use the threshold published for your exact model where one is available. Do not assume a fan should start at 50°C, 55°C, or 60°C simply because another card uses that value.

How to check whether a stopped fan is normal

  1. Identify the exact graphics-card model. Read its full model name from the card, system information, or a hardware utility. Look up that model’s official specifications or support page; sharing a GPU chip does not establish that two cards have the same fan behavior.
  2. Confirm fan-stop support and its setting. Check the specifications or manual for a feature such as Zero Frozr or 0dB. For the cited ASUS RTX models, 0dB Fan mode in GPU Tweak II is part of the specified behavior. MSI’s support guidance describes checking or disabling Zero Frozr in MSI Center. Software names and menus can vary by model and version.
  3. Check temperature and, if available, power draw. ASUS recommends using GPU Tweak II or GPU Tweak III to read temperature. MSI Afterburner can show temperature and fan speed. Compare readings with the exact card’s published start conditions, rather than relying on a generic temperature.
  4. Observe the card under an appropriate workload. If the card reaches its published fan-start condition, check whether the fan starts. A fan that remains stopped while the model’s start conditions are met needs investigation; avoid creating an unnecessarily heavy load just to test it.

What to do if the fan does not start when expected

Check settings and software first

Confirm that the card’s fan-stop mode and fan controls are configured as intended. ASUS includes updating the graphics driver among its troubleshooting steps. If you use a custom fan profile, check that it allows adequate cooling under load; MSI warns that settings that keep fans too slow at maximum load can lead to overheating and thermal throttling. MSI Afterburner supports custom fan profiles, but changing one is optional.

Inspect for a physical obstruction safely

If you suspect dust or an obstruction, shut down the computer and unplug it before inspecting the fan. ASUS advises clearing dust with a small brush, while also directing users to follow product support guidance. Do not disassemble the graphics card based on generic advice; follow the exact manufacturer’s safety and warranty instructions.

Contact the manufacturer for persistent or mechanical problems

If the fan is seriously stuck, fails to spin when expected at boot, or still does not work after appropriate checks, contact the card manufacturer’s support service. MSI specifically advises contacting Customer Service if the fan does not spin at boot. ASUS warns that a malfunctioning fan can damage the card; a suspected cooling fault should not be left unattended.

How to tell normal fan-stop from a possible fault

What you observe What it may mean What to check
Fans are still at idle or during light use Normal fan-stop behavior, if the exact model supports it and its stop conditions are met Model specifications, fan-stop setting, temperature, and—where relevant—power draw
Fans stay stopped after the card reaches its published start condition A settings, software, driver, obstruction, or mechanical issue may be present Fan controls and driver; then inspect safely with the computer shut down and unplugged
A fan is visibly stuck or fails to spin when expected at boot A possible mechanical or cooling fault Stop treating it as normal fan-stop and contact the manufacturer’s support service

These observations are a troubleshooting guide, not a substitute for the exact model’s instructions. Manufacturer documentation provides operating examples and support steps, not a universal rule for every graphics card.
