Neither is automatically better. A short game usually fits free time that arrives in small, predictable windows and gives you a clear ending before your attention moves elsewhere. A 100-hour RPG suits someone who wants one persistent world to occupy many sessions and is comfortable finishing it over weeks or months. The right choice depends on your available hours, session pattern, tolerance for unfinished games, and the kind of satisfaction you want—not on the larger number of hours.

Use the completion estimate that matches your intended play style, convert it into calendar time, and decide whether the experience still sounds enjoyable at that pace. That approach is more useful than treating playtime as a quality score.

What a game-length estimate actually measures

When a listing or player guide says a game takes 100 hours, that figure can describe very different activities. A main-story run may be far shorter than a run that includes side quests, and a completionist route can add optional missions, collectibles, repeated attempts, exploration, or downloadable content. Comparing a 12-hour main story with a 100-hour completionist estimate creates a misleading impression.

Estimate label What it normally includes Use it when you plan to
Main story Critical objectives needed to reach the ending Follow the central narrative and skip most optional content
Main story plus extras Story objectives and a meaningful selection of side missions or exploration Explore beyond the critical path without pursuing every item
Completionist Most optional missions, collectibles, upgrades, challenges, and other available goals Keep playing until the checklist is substantially complete

HowLongToBeat-style services aggregate player estimates across these play styles rather than measuring every title with one official test. The DiGRA paper describes this aggregation and notes that the industry has no standardized method for communicating play length. Player estimates can change with skill, difficulty, route, loading time, patches, platform, and whether a player stops to explore.

A Northwestern University-hosted working-paper draft using scraped HowLongToBeat data reported averages of 27.5 hours for non-indie games and 12.2 hours for indie games. Those figures came from a selected dataset, not a current universal benchmark; they should not be used to promise how long any particular game will take.

Turn hours into calendar time

A 100-hour estimate sounds abstract until it is compared with your actual schedule. Divide the estimate by the number of hours you can reliably play each week. The result is approximate because real sessions include menus, retries, breaks, and weeks when you cannot play.

Available play time 100-hour estimate at that pace What the calendar feels like
2 hours per week About 50 weeks Nearly a year, with any missed week extending the finish date
5 hours per week About 20 weeks Roughly five months
10 hours per week About 10 weeks Approximately one season
15 hours per week About 6.7 weeks Six to seven weeks of sustained availability
20 hours per week About 5 weeks A concentrated month-long project
30 hours per week About 3.3 weeks Less than a month, if that schedule is realistic

These are planning examples, not guarantees. A player who spends 10 hours a week on a 100-hour RPG may still take longer if the estimate describes completionist play while the player explores slowly. Conversely, a skilled player rushing the main path may finish sooner.

What large-RPG players report

In a 2025 Push Square self-selected poll with 2,202 votes, 59% of respondents said a big RPG takes them months and 32% said it takes several weeks. The poll shows how a nominally fixed runtime expands across different schedules; it is not a representative survey of all players.

Five questions that decide the better fit

1. How many hours can you protect each week?

Count hours you can repeat without borrowing from sleep, work, family time, or other priorities. If the honest answer is one or two hours spread across several days, a 100-hour game can remain in progress for most of a year. That may be fine if you enjoy a long-term hobby, but it is a poor fit if seeing credits soon matters to you.

Use your normal week, not a holiday week or an optimistic target. If your available time changes seasonally, calculate both a busy-season and a free-season finish date.

2. How long is a comfortable session?

Short games often work in 20- to 60-minute sessions because their objectives are easier to recall. Long RPGs can also be paused, but they may ask you to remember a map, quest chain, combat build, or narrative cast. If you usually play in brief intervals, favor games with frequent checkpoints, compact chapters, or a clear quest log.

If you regularly have uninterrupted two- to four-hour sessions, a large RPG can make better use of that block. You can complete a quest arc, learn a combat system, and maintain narrative momentum before stopping.

3. Do you want closure or an ongoing world?

A short game gives you a bounded arc: the premise develops, reaches a conclusion, and leaves room for a different game. That structure is valuable when your free time is unpredictable or when you want the satisfaction of finishing projects.

A long RPG treats continuity as part of the appeal. Returning to the same characters and systems can feel like revisiting a favorite series. The trade-off is that you may spend weeks away from the ending, and a new release or life change can interrupt the relationship with that world.

4. Will optional content feel like play or like homework?

Some players enjoy clearing every side quest, collecting upgrades, and experimenting with builds. Others begin with curiosity and eventually feel obligated to empty every map marker. A 100-hour completionist estimate is only attractive if the optional activities remain pleasurable at hour 60, 80, or 100.

In another 2025 Push Square poll, 1,971 respondents were asked whether they try to do everything in a big RPG. Fifty-three percent said they do most things as long as they are enjoying them. That answer describes a useful middle path: treat optional content as a choice, not a contract.

5. What kind of value are you buying?

Dividing a purchase price by hours can reveal whether a game is likely to occupy your schedule, but it cannot measure the value of a memorable six-hour story, a fresh mechanic, or a carefully paced ending. A long game with repetitive activities may provide less satisfaction than a short game that respects every minute.

Conversely, a long RPG can be good value for someone who wants a single world for months and enjoys its optional systems. The relevant comparison is the experience you will actually use, not the maximum number printed in a guide.

What the preference polls suggest—and what they do not

A 2022 Push Square poll with 5,174 votes asked readers about their ideal game length. Thirty percent selected 20–30 hours, 27% selected 10–20 hours, and 23% selected 40 hours or more. The spread matters more than any single leading category: readers have substantially different definitions of an ideal commitment.

Both Push Square polls were opt-in polls on a gaming publication. Their percentages describe those respondents, not the entire gaming population. They are useful for illustrating the range of preferences, not for proving that one duration produces greater enjoyment.

Evidence from a separate dissertation by Bailey likewise does not identify a universal winner. In its sample, user ratings did not differ significantly between games with one- to five-hour main paths and games with main paths longer than five hours. This was an observational result within that sample; it does not show that duration has no effect on an individual player’s enjoyment or that all short and long games are equally well made.

Why short games can be the smarter use of limited free time

They reduce completion risk

If you can finish a game in a few evenings or a couple of weekends, a disrupted schedule is less likely to leave it permanently unfinished. Completion itself can be motivating, especially when your backlog contains many abandoned long games.

They preserve narrative memory

Shorter campaigns generally require fewer reminders of names, systems, and plot threads. You can return after a busy week without replaying tutorials or reading a lengthy quest journal.

They make experimentation cheaper

A compact game lets you try an unfamiliar genre, control scheme, or difficulty level without committing an entire season. If it is not a fit, the opportunity cost is limited.

The trade-offs

  • A short runtime can feel abrupt if the story introduces more ideas than it can develop.
  • Some systems may be simplified because there is less time to teach and deepen them.
  • The purchase may feel expensive if you measure value almost entirely in hours.
  • Replayability varies; a finished short game may offer little reason to return unless its mechanics support repeated runs.

Why a 100-hour RPG can be the right choice

It creates continuity

A long RPG can turn a few weekly sessions into an ongoing routine. Character progression, relationships, and world-building accumulate in a way that a series of disconnected short games cannot always provide.

It supports mastery

Large RPGs often have room for layered builds, equipment choices, tactical encounters, crafting, or exploration. Players who enjoy learning a system over time may find the length itself rewarding.

It absorbs irregular free time

If you prefer returning to one familiar game whenever a free evening appears, a long RPG can remove the need to choose a new title repeatedly. You can pause after a quest and resume later rather than starting from zero each time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-offs

  • The game can become an obligation, especially when optional tasks are presented as an ever-growing checklist.
  • Long gaps can weaken your memory of controls, quests, and story details.
  • A newer release may arrive before you finish, creating pressure to abandon the current game.
  • Repetition becomes more noticeable when the same activities fill dozens of hours.
  • A completionist target can expand well beyond the headline estimate.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an often-cited example of a long RPG that may take upwards of 70, 80, or 90 hours depending on pace and what the player does. Those numbers describe different play patterns, not a guaranteed runtime.

A practical decision table

Your situation Usually the better starting point Reason
You have under five reliable hours a week and want to finish something soon Short game A 20–30-hour campaign can fit in weeks rather than months
You have regular multi-hour sessions and enjoy character progression Long RPG Long sessions preserve momentum and let systems deepen
Your schedule changes constantly Short or chapter-based game Frequent stopping points reduce the cost of interruptions
You want one world to revisit for months 100-hour RPG Continuity is part of the value
You are tired of unfinished games Short game first A bounded commitment can restore confidence in finishing
You enjoy side content only when it remains optional Either, with a main-story estimate Plan around the critical path and add extras selectively

How to choose before you buy or start

  1. Write down your real weekly hours. Use the average from the last month. Separate weekday micro-sessions from weekend blocks.
  2. Choose the target endpoint. Decide whether you want credits, the main story plus selected extras, or near-completion. Do not use a completionist number if that is not your plan.
  3. Check more than one estimate label. Compare main story, main story plus extras, and completionist figures from a player-estimate service. Note the platform and the date of the estimate.
  4. Convert the target into weeks. Divide the selected hours by your weekly availability, then add contingency for missed sessions. If the result already feels tiring, choose a shorter game.
  5. Inspect the stopping structure. Look for chapter breaks, manual saves, checkpoint frequency, and whether the game allows you to pause safely. These details matter when sessions are short.
  6. Set an optional-content rule. For example, complete side quests that interest you, ignore collectible cleanup, and move on when an activity stops being fun.
  7. Decide how you will handle interruptions. If you expect a new release, travel, or a busy season, choose a game whose main arc can be completed before that interruption or accept that the long RPG may become a slow-burn project.

How to play a long RPG without turning it into a chore

Keep a stopping note

At the end of each session, record your current objective, location, build idea, and the next obvious action. A few sentences can replace a lengthy refresher when you return after a week.

Separate progress from completion

Use the main story as your default route. Treat optional quests as invitations. If an activity starts feeling like administrative cleanup, skip it without considering the run incomplete.

Set a review point

After five or ten hours, ask whether the combat, exploration, and narrative still justify the time you are giving them. Continuing because you have already invested hours is not a reason to spend the next 50.

Protect variety

A long RPG does not need to be your only game. Alternating it with a short title can prevent fatigue, provided you can remember its systems when you return.

How to get value from a short game

Pick the right estimate

If you want a complete-feeling weekend, choose a main-story estimate that fits two or three sessions rather than selecting a game whose advertised length is based on replaying every challenge.

Allow the ending to be the point

Do not add arbitrary collectibles to justify the purchase. A focused campaign can deliver value through pacing, atmosphere, mechanics, or a strong conclusion even when its hour count is modest.

Consider replayability honestly

Some short games are designed for one carefully paced run; others invite multiple routes, higher difficulties, or procedural variation. Count replay value only if you genuinely expect to replay.

Common mistakes when comparing runtimes

  • Using a maximum as a promise: a 100-hour completionist figure is not the expected time for every player.
  • Comparing unlike measures: match main-story estimates with main-story estimates, not a short game’s critical path against a long game’s full checklist.
  • Ignoring your own pace: guides may assume average progress, while exploration, retries, and difficulty choices change the result.
  • Treating hours as quality: additional content has value only when you want to spend time on it.
  • Forgetting calendar interruptions: illness, travel, work peaks, and competing hobbies can turn a nominal six-week game into a multi-month project.
  • Confusing sunk cost with enjoyment: you are allowed to stop a game that no longer fits your free time.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The available figures establish that players experience a wide range of durations and that long RPGs commonly stretch across several weeks or months. They do not establish a causal rule that short games are more satisfying, that long games provide better value, or that one ideal length exists.

Completion-time databases are especially difficult to interpret for replayable games, live updates, branching narratives, and titles with sparse or selectively submitted data. The DiGRA paper and the Northwestern draft both describe these measurement limits. Treat every estimate as a planning aid with a margin of error, not as a standardized specification.

The most defensible conclusion is personal: match the game’s likely commitment to the time you can actually protect and to the activities you want to perform. A short game wins when finishing and variety matter most. A 100-hour RPG wins when continuity, exploration, and long-term progression are worth reserving a season of free evenings.

Make the choice fit your life

Before starting, answer three questions: How many hours can I give this each week? What endpoint will satisfy me? Will the optional content remain enjoyable rather than obligatory? If your answers point to a bounded commitment, choose the short game and enjoy its ending without apologizing for the runtime. If they point to a sustained hobby built around one evolving world, choose the RPG and plan for the calendar time it will occupy. The better game is the one whose demands and rewards match your actual free time.
