Short answer: investigate Shopify first if your lifestyle brand expects multichannel selling, increasingly complex fulfillment, several staff members, retail or pop-up sales, or rapid catalog growth. Squarespace is a credible choice when a tightly integrated editorial website and store matter most and your sales, team, and fulfillment needs fit the selected plan. There is no universal winner: order volume, average order value, sales channels, product count, countries served, payment methods, and team size determine the better financial and operational fit.

This comparison uses US pricing and plan information checked October 13, 2026. Prices and features can change, so confirm the live plan pages before signing up: Shopify pricing and Squarespace pricing.

The decision in one view

If your priority is… Start by evaluating… Why
Multichannel commerce, operational depth, or complex fulfillment Shopify Its plans foreground inventory locations, social and marketplace selling, shipping tools, staff accounts, and a large app ecosystem.
A polished content-led site with an integrated store Squarespace Commerce, content, products, services, memberships, and subscriptions can be managed in one site platform.
Very small, uncomplicated online sales Compare Shopify Basic with Squarespace Basic using your actual orders Squarespace Basic has the lower annual-billing subscription but adds a 2% online-store transaction fee; Shopify Basic costs more per month but lists a 2.9% + $0.30 standard online card rate and a 2% third-party transaction fee.
Pop-ups, events, or a permanent retail counter Test the POS packaging on both platforms Both support in-person selling, but Shopify POS Pro is an $89-per-location monthly add-on, while Squarespace POS is presented through its US mobile app and Square payment processing.
International expansion Verify market-specific support before choosing Shopify lists localized selling tools and an international card-rate addition. The supplied Squarespace information mentions international-card and currency-conversion fees but does not establish equivalent global workflows.

Use the table as a starting point, not a verdict. A brand with 20 orders a month can rationally choose differently from one with 2,000 orders, even if both sell the same type of product.

What you are actually choosing

Shopify: commerce operations first

Shopify is structured around running a store and extending it into other channels. Its official plan information calls out inventory management, up to ten inventory locations on Basic, selling on social networks and marketplaces, shipping discounts and labels, tiered staff accounts, and integrations with thousands of apps (Shopify plan details). Those capabilities matter when orders arrive from several places, stock is split between a warehouse and a studio, or multiple people need controlled access.

The trade-off is that the platform cost is only one part of the budget. You must account for the subscription, card processing, any applicable platform transaction fee, point-of-sale software or hardware, and essential apps or integrations. More operational power can also mean more configuration and more decisions for a small team.

Squarespace: the site and store as one experience

Squarespace combines a branded website, publishing tools, and ecommerce in the same platform. Its US pricing page lists integrated ecommerce, product and catalog management, unlimited products and services, social catalog promotion, abandoned-cart recovery, subscription goods, and product-status labels (Squarespace plan features). The Help Center says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any of the Basic, Core, Plus, or Advanced plans, with fees decreasing as plans are upgraded (Squarespace plan-selection guidance).

That integrated approach can be attractive to a lifestyle brand whose buying journey begins with stories, guides, lookbooks, or a strong visual homepage. The limits are plan-specific: transaction fees, shipping labels, merchandising controls, integrations, analytics, and payment costs vary by tier. Confirm each feature against the plan you would actually purchase rather than assuming that “commerce included” means every commerce tool is included.

US pricing: subscription price is only the first line

The following figures are US dollars and show monthly equivalents when the annual-billing rate is used. The month-to-month column is a separate subscription choice, not an additional charge on top of annual billing. Figures were checked October 13, 2026; recheck at publication because plans and rates change.

Platform and plan Annual billing, monthly equivalent Month-to-month Published processing or transaction detail
Shopify Basic $29/mo $39/mo Standard online card rate listed as 2.9% + $0.30; a 2% third-party transaction fee is listed.
Shopify Grow $79/mo $105/mo Standard online card rate listed as 2.7% + $0.30; up to five staff accounts.
Shopify Advanced $299/mo $399/mo Standard online card rate listed as 2.5% + $0.30; live third-party shipping rates listed.
Shopify Plus From $2,300/mo Not stated Shopify describes this as a three-year-term starting price for complex businesses.
Squarespace Basic $19/mo $25/mo 2% online-store transaction fee; card processing is additional.
Squarespace Core $29/mo $39/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments card rate listed in Help Center guidance as 2.9% + $0.30.
Squarespace Plus $49/mo $65/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments card rate listed as 2.7% + $0.30.
Squarespace Advanced $99/mo $139/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments card rate listed as 2.5% + $0.30.

Squarespace’s fee guidance, updated April 3, 2026, explains that higher tiers offer lower fees and that transaction volume can make a higher tier economical (Squarespace plan fee guidance). Taxes, optional services, hardware, apps, integrations, payment-method-specific charges, and any international fees can change the amount actually paid.

How to calculate your real monthly cost

Do not compare $19 with $29 and stop. Build a monthly model for each platform:

  1. Subscription: use either the annual-billing monthly equivalent or the month-to-month price, and model the cash commitment correctly. Annual billing generally means paying under an annual term even though the rate is displayed per month.
  2. Platform transaction fees: include Squarespace Basic’s 2% online-store fee if you choose that plan. Include any Shopify third-party transaction fee that applies to your payment setup; the Shopify Basic table lists 2%.
  3. Card processing: apply the rate and fixed amount to each order. A 2.9% + $0.30 rate is not equivalent to 2.9% alone, especially for low-priced items.
  4. Payment mix: model cards, wallets, bank methods, and any method-specific charges separately. The listed rates are not a promise that every payment method costs the same.
  5. Retail selling: add POS software, hardware, card readers, receipt equipment, and the cost of additional locations or staff permissions.
  6. Required extensions: list only the apps, integrations, shipping tools, subscriptions, or services the brand genuinely needs. A platform that looks cheaper before essential extensions may not remain cheaper.
  7. International costs: add currency conversion, international card surcharges, duties or tax services, and local payment requirements where applicable.

Run the model with at least three months: a low-sales month, a normal month, and a launch or seasonal month. Use actual average order value and order count instead of an industry average. The break-even point between a lower subscription and a transaction fee depends on those inputs, so a general “cheapest platform” claim would be misleading.

Commerce operations and growth

Inventory and locations

Shopify Basic lists ten inventory locations. That can be useful if stock is divided among a home studio, third-party warehouse, pop-up storage, and retail space. Before choosing, define whether a “location” in your process means a physical site, a fulfillment partner, or a virtual inventory bucket, then verify how the platform allocates available stock and prevents overselling.

Squarespace provides product and catalog management and unlimited products or services across its listed plans. The practical question is not merely catalog size; it is how many variants, bundles, subscriptions, backorders, locations, and fulfillment rules your team must maintain. Ask whether your required merchandising and inventory behavior is available on the chosen Squarespace tier, especially if you expect the catalog or fulfillment network to become more complex.

Channels and integrations

Shopify explicitly lists selling on social channels and marketplaces and integrations with thousands of apps. That emphasis suits a brand that expects its storefront, social catalog, marketplace listings, email system, shipping service, accounting process, and customer support tools to exchange data.

Squarespace lists social catalog promotion and more integrations on higher plans. Map every channel before committing: the platform where the order originates, where inventory is authoritative, which system prints the label, and where refunds and customer records are reconciled. A channel that can display products is not necessarily a complete order-management integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Team access and workflow

Shopify Grow lists up to five staff accounts, while the plan comparison presents staff-account tiers as part of the upgrade path. Count people who need individual logins, not just full-time employees: founders, customer-support contractors, fulfillment staff, agencies, and retail associates may all require distinct permissions.

For Squarespace, check the exact collaborator, staff, and permission controls available in your plan and workflow. If several people edit products, process refunds, answer customers, and manage content, write down the minimum roles before comparing prices. Shared passwords obscure accountability and make an eventual migration harder.

Storefront, catalog, and brand experience

A lifestyle brand often needs the store to feel like a magazine, portfolio, or community hub. Squarespace’s single-site approach can reduce the separation between editorial pages and product pages. Its listed features include product-status labels, abandoned-cart recovery, subscription goods, social catalog promotion, and unlimited products and services. Higher plans list additional integrations and sales analytics, while advanced merchandising and US shipping labels are plan-dependent (Squarespace pricing and features).

Shopify can also support brand storytelling, but its central design problem is operational: how products, variants, inventory, fulfillment, discounts, customers, and orders behave at scale. A brand that needs extensive content should assess the theme and content workflow alongside the commerce workflow, not assume that a beautiful homepage answers questions about returns, subscriptions, or stock synchronization.

For either platform, create a representative catalog before deciding. Include your highest-variant item, a subscription product if relevant, a product with an out-of-stock state, a gift or bundle, and a product sold at a pop-up. Check the customer-facing page, admin editing flow, checkout, confirmation email, refund process, and reporting. This is a decision exercise, not evidence that one platform performs better in every case.

In-person sales and POS

Shopify POS

Shopify lists casual selling at pop-ups and events on paid plans. Its POS Pro option is listed at $89 per location per month. Treat “location” and “staff” as separate cost drivers: a weekend market, permanent shop, and warehouse may have different hardware, permissions, and inventory requirements. Confirm compatible hardware, offline behavior, receipts, returns, and the exact plan needed for each register before purchase.

Squarespace POS

Squarespace lists POS across its plans. The pricing page specifies that its mobile-app POS is US-only for iOS and Android, processes payments through Square, and synchronizes inventory, customers, and sales analytics. That can suit a US brand with occasional events, but availability and payment routing are materially different from a generic “POS included” statement. Confirm supported hardware, staff roles, inventory behavior, refunds, and whether your preferred device and payment flow are supported.

For either platform, test a complete in-person cycle: sell an item, reduce online inventory, exchange it, refund it, and inspect the customer record and reports. A synchronized quantity is not enough if returns, tax, discounts, or staff attribution do not match the way the business operates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

International selling: verify before you build around it

Shopify’s plan information lists localized selling tools, local currencies, local domains, duties and tax estimates, and a 1% international card-rate addition in its pricing table (Shopify pricing). These features still require market-by-market checks for payment availability, tax registration, shipping promises, returns, and legal disclosures.

The supplied Squarespace information identifies international-card surcharge and currency-conversion fees but does not establish equivalent global-commerce workflows. If selling outside the US is central to the plan, verify destination-market payment methods, currency display and settlement, tax and duty handling, shipping-label availability, domain strategy, and fraud controls in current Squarespace documentation before selecting it. Do not treat the absence of a listed workflow as proof that no workaround exists; treat it as a requirement to validate.

Choosing a Shopify plan

Basic

Basic is the entry point to investigate for a solo or very small team that needs Shopify’s commerce foundation, up to ten inventory locations, and multichannel selling. Its annual-billing equivalent is $29 per month or $39 month-to-month. The listed standard online card rate is 2.9% + $0.30, and the pricing table lists a 2% third-party transaction fee. Model the fee carefully if your payment setup will not use Shopify’s preferred processing route.

Grow

Grow is listed at $79 per month on annual billing or $105 month-to-month, with a 2.7% + $0.30 standard online card rate and up to five staff accounts. It becomes relevant when additional users and a lower listed card rate matter more than the Basic subscription price. Confirm every permission and transaction-fee detail for your payment configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced

Advanced is listed at $299 per month annually or $399 month-to-month, with a 2.5% + $0.30 standard online card rate and live third-party shipping rates. It is worth evaluating when shipping calculations and larger operational workflows justify the substantial subscription increase.

Plus

Shopify lists Plus from $2,300 per month as a three-year-term starting price for complex businesses. That is a different commitment and buying process from the self-serve tiers. A growing lifestyle brand should not assume it needs Plus merely because it has ambitious revenue targets; evaluate the actual operational, organizational, and contract requirements.

Choosing a Squarespace plan

Basic

Basic is $19 per month on annual billing or $25 month-to-month and carries a 2% online-store transaction fee. It can be sensible for uncomplicated online sales when the lower subscription offsets the fee at your actual order volume. Include card processing and any required feature upgrade in the comparison.

Core

Core is $29 per month annually or $39 month-to-month and removes the commerce transaction fee. Squarespace’s guidance lists a domestic Squarespace Payments card rate of 2.9% + $0.30. This tier is often the first one to model when a brand wants the integrated site-and-store experience without Basic’s percentage fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plus

Plus is $49 per month annually or $65 month-to-month, with no commerce transaction fee and a listed domestic Squarespace Payments rate of 2.7% + $0.30. Compare the extra subscription against the processing savings and any plan-specific features your team would actually use.

Advanced

Advanced is $99 per month annually or $139 month-to-month, with no commerce transaction fee and a listed domestic Squarespace Payments rate of 2.5% + $0.30. It is the tier to investigate when higher volume, analytics, integrations, merchandising, or other advanced capabilities justify the price.

A practical decision checklist

Answer these questions with numbers before choosing:

  • How many orders did you receive in each of the last three months, and what is the average order value?
  • How many products, variants, subscriptions, bundles, and seasonal items will be active?
  • Where is inventory stored today, and how many locations will you need within 12 months?
  • Which channels generate orders: your website, social catalogs, marketplaces, wholesale, pop-ups, or a permanent store?
  • How many people need individual access, and which actions should each role be allowed to perform?
  • Which shipping rates, label services, fulfillment partners, accounting tools, email tools, and customer-support systems are essential?
  • Will you sell in person? If so, which country, devices, payment processor, locations, and return rules apply?
  • Which countries and currencies are in scope, and who will handle taxes, duties, returns, and local compliance?
  • Which payment methods will customers use, and are the quoted card rates available for those methods?
  • What is the acceptable switching cost if the platform no longer fits in two years?

If the answers point to many channels, locations, staff, and fulfillment rules, Shopify is the stronger default to investigate. If they point to one primarily online store, a content-heavy brand presentation, a modest team, and straightforward fulfillment, Squarespace deserves a serious comparison—especially Core, Plus, or Advanced if Basic’s 2% fee would be material.

Migration and implementation risks

Moving from Squarespace to Shopify

Do not treat a platform switch as a theme swap. Inventory SKUs, variants, images, product descriptions, collections, customer consent, discount logic, subscriptions, order history, redirects, analytics tags, and email automations all need an explicit migration plan. Preserve old URLs where possible and create redirects for changed paths. Reconcile a sample of products and customers before opening the new checkout.

Moving from Shopify to Squarespace

The same discipline applies in the other direction. Confirm which products, subscriptions, customer records, orders, redirects, shipping rules, and integrations can be imported or must be rebuilt. A visual redesign can hide operational omissions, so test fulfillment, refunds, taxes, inventory adjustments, and abandoned-cart recovery before launch.

Launch safeguards

  1. Export and retain the source platform’s product, customer, and order data according to applicable privacy obligations.
  2. Build a staging catalog with representative variants, subscriptions, discounts, and out-of-stock cases.
  3. Run test payments, cancellations, refunds, exchanges, shipping calculations, tax calculations, and confirmation emails.
  4. Check every sales channel for duplicate listings, stale prices, and incorrect inventory quantities.
  5. Ask a staff member who did not build the migration to complete a real purchase and return.
  6. Publish redirects, update analytics and advertising destinations, and monitor failed checkouts and support requests after launch.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from the headline price: subscription, platform fees, processing, POS, apps, and international charges produce the real total.
  • Confusing transaction fees with card processing: a platform percentage and a processor percentage are separate line items.
  • Assuming every plan includes every commerce feature: shipping labels, merchandising, analytics, integrations, and fee exemptions are tier-dependent.
  • Counting channels instead of workflows: listing a product on social media is different from synchronizing inventory, orders, refunds, and customer data.
  • Ignoring staff access: shared credentials create security and accountability problems, while individual accounts may require a higher tier.
  • Calling POS “included” without testing it: hardware, country, operating system, payment processor, location, and staff requirements can change the cost.
  • Assuming international readiness: currencies, cards, taxes, duties, shipping, and returns need destination-specific validation.
  • Using a vendor testimonial as proof: Shopify’s pricing page presents a testimonial from FTC founder Kent Uyehara saying the platform made it easy to manage orders, inventory, marketing, and analytics. It is a Shopify-published customer statement, not independent comparative evidence.

Bottom-line recommendation

For a growing US lifestyle brand, Shopify is the better default investigation when growth depends on multichannel sales, deeper commerce operations, more staff, multiple inventory locations, or complex fulfillment. Squarespace is a credible alternative when the integrated website-and-store experience is central and the brand’s catalog, team, channels, and fee tolerance fit Basic, Core, Plus, or Advanced. Make the final choice with your own order volume, average order value, channel mix, POS plans, payment methods, and international requirements—not with the subscription price alone.
