Shopify gives Mumbai businesses tools to build and customize an online store, but choosing the platform does not by itself make a store high-performing. Store design, product presentation, navigation, checkout and any custom functionality still need to fit the business and its customers.
What Shopify provides for an online store
Shopify’s online store supports product sales, pages and blogs, navigation menus, filters, custom domains, responsive themes and accelerated checkout buttons. Shopify says a Basic plan or higher is required to sell through an online store. These are building blocks; the business must still decide how to organize products, explain them and guide shoppers through checkout. Shopify’s online-store overview describes the available features.
How to choose a storefront approach
Start with a theme
Shopify offers free and paid themes. A free theme can be a practical starting point for a business whose needs match its built-in layout and features. Paid themes can be previewed before purchase. For a third-party theme, check the license and support terms: Shopify says the license applies to the store that bought it, while the theme developer generally supplies support and updates. Shopify’s theme guidance explains theme options and licensing.
Use developer help for requirements a theme cannot meet
If the standard online-store features do not cover a specific customer experience or function, Shopify describes developer tools for building a custom storefront. Its theme guidance also discusses working with a Shopify Partner or agency. This is an optional route for requirements that justify custom work, rather than a prerequisite for every store. Keep India billing separate from customer checkout
For eligible India-based stores, Shopify’s billing documentation says Shopify bills can be paid in INR using UPI or certain co-branded Visa, Mastercard or RuPay cards. It says PayPal cannot be used to pay Shopify bills in India. Shopify also says these bill payments are processed through Razorpay and describes setting up a UPI mandate. These details concern the merchant’s Shopify subscription billing; they do not establish which payment methods customers can use at checkout. What the Mumbai store count does—and does not—show
Store Leads lists 10,467 Shopify stores based in Mumbai in a report accessed in 2026. This is a changing third-party technology-dataset count, not an official Shopify census. It indicates that stores appear in that dataset, but it does not show adoption growth, active sales, revenue or performance. Store Leads’ Mumbai report is the source for the count.

How to read the performance examples
Bombay Shaving Company
Shopify’s customer case study reports a 150% conversion-rate uplift for Bombay Shaving Company and says it processed more than 50,000 orders in two days during sale events. The surfaced case-study page does not state a publication date. These are company-specific figures reported by Shopify, not typical outcomes or evidence about Mumbai businesses generally. Kesari & Co.
A PRS India case study about the Mumbai-located agency’s work with Kesari & Co. reports Largest Contentful Paint improving from 4.9 seconds to 1.6 seconds, a 34% increase in mobile conversion and 80% less JavaScript shipped before first paint. The page dates the case study to 2023 and says it was updated in July 2026. What to evaluate before building
Define the store’s requirements before choosing a theme or commissioning custom work. In particular, specify the storefront features shoppers need, how products and navigation should work, what level of customization is necessary, the theme’s purchase and support terms, and how the business will handle Shopify subscription billing in India. A platform provides capabilities; the resulting store’s performance depends on how those capabilities are implemented and on factors the case studies do not establish for other merchants.
